vkr: Hotel Homely Raj is good and very close to the Hazra / Kalighat metro rail area. the proximity to Uttam Mancha is indeed a bonus! Manoharpukur Road does wind its way eastward towards the dwellings of the children of a lesser god - much will have undoubtedly changed since the 60's. do let me know if you plan to make a trip,,
vijay: the dosa / coffee combo remains just as good at Homely Raj!

Nandagopal,
So nice to hear about "Homely Raj". I recollect with great Nostalgia my days in Kolkata (then Calcutta) from 1992 to 1994, when I used to have meals in this hotel. Potato curry was the speciality then and service was always with a smile
My best wishes for 10 days of delightful music !

Cienu, were you also an inhabitant of that "den of depraved dingbats" (to quote from Archie), putting lake from the jetty?!! If not, apologies for what must sound like complete gibberish...
Nandagopal happy to know that Homely Raj is as homely as ever although, like Cienu, I was more partial to the meals and that brilliant aloo curry

Oh no Vijay ! I was not an inhabitant of the "den of depraved dingbats" ! Took sometime for me to figure out what you were trying to say
Or maybe I have still not figured out fully !
I used to stay a little far away beyond Tollygunj Tram Depot on the road to Garia. (pronounced Goria) and my visits to Homely Raj were mostly on weekends with my wife

I was in Lake Place (near Lake market) for 12 years, 5 years in Behala (near tram depot) and 2 years in Lansdowne road accross National High school (period 1962-81); great memories, Bangladesh war(backout), communal riot(curfew), tram burning, Chief Minister Sen, Sidhartha Shankar Ray, Ajoy Mukherjee, Jyoti Basu, BBD Bagh, etc etc.

vijay: we stay opp. IIM-C in Joka! I still take the share autos to work everyday; Thakurpukur may be connected by overhead "light rail" to Dalhousie Sq. in the future - would be great when plans materialize!
cienu: When you say "Goria" it "warms the cockles of my heart!" - Garia is, incidentally, now on the metro map!
arasi: the tradition of night-long HM sessions at the Dover Lane music conference in mid-Jan is still vibrant in this part of the country and provides for a great ambience. The CM series organized by Rasika Ranjana sabha runs concurrently. we attend the CM concerts in the evening and HM concerts through the night! when i turn up bleary-eyed for work the next day, they know why!
vkr: You summed it up so nicely - The City of Joy rarely sleeps!

Well, well! I will say hello when I drop into campus next time, although it is getting rarer these days...good to know the share autos are still doing duty although it is not exactly comfortable when you are perched on a half a seat next to the driver...but better than Mumbai locals any day...
We can add Sriram (sBala) from this forum to the list of ex-Kolkata-ites....besides, of course, many eminent musicians incl. Sriram Parasuram and our own Jeyashri+Jeyaraj

Hi I am also a ex-kolkattan, stayed there between 1989 and 1991 in Purnadas road. Used to attend concerts in Thyagaraja Hall and In the hall below Birla temple, mostly organised by SICA.
Me and my wife have still have fond memories of hte city. Vidyasagar used to be Bidyasogar.
Share autos, Rs1 Rosagolla, pani puri near the lake and the wonderful Durga Pooja all used to be interesting.

Not to mention :
First-day first-show balcony seats selling for Rs. 20 in the black market.
Stretching your jaws as far as you think they can go, to gobble dozens of huge puchkas...only to drop them still further when you're asked for Rs. 3 or 4....
55 paise for 1st class tram tickets as opposed to a more reasonable 45 paise for 2nd class....
Listening to a raging argument between a fellow passenger and the conductor, gradually discovering that they were fighting over 10p in change that had not been returned...to me!!
I will refrain from mentioning Oly pub or a certain substance procured from Pailan in deference to the sensibilities of this forum....
Calcutta is a great place for students!!

Sorry to intrude but could not resist. Enjoyed the above bit by Vijay.
My brother and family lived there for quite a few years in the eighties and they loved the city. How about the special bargaining techniques like you start at 90% below what the shopkeeper quotes and he/she would not take offense.

Vasant Utsav celebrations at ITC Sangeet Research Academy [1 Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road, Tollygunge, Kolkata 700040] on March 13 at 6:30 pm. Passes are available from 09-03-09. A concert to celebrate the advent of spring.
Following the inaugural address by Dr. Vidyadhar Vyas at 6:30 pm
Pt. Falguni Mitra’s pupils present compositions on Basant and Hori Dhamar
Pt. Arun Bhaduri’s pupils present Khayal compositions on Hori
Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan’s pupils present Khayal and Thumri compositions on Hori
Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar’s pupils present Khayal compositions on Hori
Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty’s pupils present Dadra compositions on Hori
Accompanying artists include Pt. Jyoti Guha and Vidushi Rupashree Bhattacharya on the Harmonium; Pt. Gopal Mishra and Pt. Sandip Kr. Raychaudhuri on the tabla; Pt. Babua Lodh and Pt. Biswanath Das on the Dholak; Pt. Sanjiban Acharya and Pt. Apurba Lal Manna on Pakhaawaj.
At 8:15 pm, Vidushi Prabhati Mukherjee presents Thumri and Dadra to the accompaniment of Pt. Manas Chakraborty on the Tabla, Pt. Pratap Roy on the Accordion and Pt. Pradip Mukherjee on percussion.
The celebrations went off very well. Special mention must be made of the fact that the organizers and artists gave of their best depsite being troubled by the knowledge that their "Ajoy" had been hospitalized - Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty is in the Intensive Care Unit but his condition is now stable. Hope he gets well soon.
March 10 at G.D. Birla Sabhagar; 7 pm: Sangeet Ashram (9831200086) presents an evening of Indian classical music featuring vocal recital by leading dhrupad exponents Gundecha Brothers (Pandit Umakant Gundecha and Pandit Ramakant Gundecha) accompanied by Pandit Akhilesh Gundecha on the pakhawaj.
The recital of the Gundecha brothers featured nom-tom alapchari in Raag Marwa and striking layakari in the dhrupad composition that followed. For me the highlight was a 4- minute audio clip of Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar (their guru) that was played by way of introducing the audience to Dagar bani. Pt. Vijay Kichlu, who spoke on the occasion, had two questions for the audience and requested that they respond as and when they had an answer: (i) Why is it that khayal gharanas, with the exception of the Agra gharana, have done away with alap? (ii) Why is it that dhrupadiyas engage in ta da re ne vocalization instead of the "shuddh aakaar"

Ravi: I'm sorry to say I am not aware - do you think it might be a good idea to post a query on the dance-related web sites.. maybe Narthaki, or better still contacting the maestro himself http://www.adoorgopalakrishnan.in
Not sure where this would lead http://en.unifrance.org/movie/26912/dan ... teresse-la
I'll certainly keep my eyes and ears open..
