VK Sir, Immense thanks for that Se.Balasubramaniam clip. I was heariing him for the first time. Very impressive music. It is unfortunate that such vidwans never got the popularity and fame they richly deserved. I found his singing resembling MMI style to a certain extent.

This has been the most recent recording I have heard of Palghat Mani Iyer sir and by far the best audio quality. Without any exaggeration, his accompaniment truly made me feel as though I was still learning my first days of Mridangam! I unfortunately never had the chance to hear Mani Iyer sir play live, and thus the recordings I have heard (mostly of ARI) was short of "HD" quality. This video opened my eyes and showed me why he is regarded by many, as the best mridangist to ever play.

Thank you VK Sir, for the pains you are taking to provide us good music in spite of your physical pains.
That RTP in Malahari by TNS is an outstanding one. The accompaniments are SD Sridhar on the violin and Ramanathapuram CS Murugaboopathy on the Mridangom. This was in the early 80s. I heard that this was sung during the inauguration of the music school by his prime disciple- Neyveli Santhanagopalan. TNS was the forerunner for today's artistes singing RTP in rare and Hindustani ragas.
The alapana of Malahari is marvellous as we never heard of this raga alapana before this concert. Another amazing feature of this RTP- The Pallavi is taken from the famous geetham and the ragamalika swaras are in the ragams of the other geetams we learn in the initital stages.

The song itself was a download some time back from sp archives..

I understand that the raga is Hamsa vinodhini ..but I am not sure as there is another view that it is raga NirOshtA, as

Ma and Pa are missing in this rAgam..But I feel that even when swaram is absent, still the lips touch when we sing 'maniye'..

and as such this cannot be Niroshta..Please advice me..

Composer is still not known..

Dear VK/Satyabalu: I am sure it is Hamsavinodhini--BMK's song Guruni Swarumpumo and LGJ's varnam in Hamsavinodhini show the salient facets of this raga. If forumites can find this in their archives,please post them. SK's rendering of it is fully consistent with both BMK's and JGJ's handling of this raga

I have GJR and Viji's playing this song in an NY concert which lies buried in my archives as many other gems--my digital phobia plus my legendary ennui and sloth(attributes according to my wife whose judgement I shall not question--Look whom she chose!!!)are the obstacles to recover the "needles" from the "haystacks".hopefully before the end of the year I will find a solution for it!!!

Good to hear from you! Don't berate yourself. There are plenty of us who are there to keep you company in such things! Some of us are born without the industry which goes with what they are able to do. Bless them all, their bounty feeds our yearnings for good music.

Also, they were born in decades which followed our stone age in technology! We know that our young grandchildren are more adept at this than we are. Of course, there are exceptions among our brethren--to name some, Venkatakailasam, Pasupathy and CML (who dabbles as much in technology as he spends time with his ancient studies!).

It used to be that only a few (and it took a great deal of effort and devotion) could bring the bounty to us all. Now, plenty of music (even vintage) is at our beckoning. Thanks to plenty of kind link providers and of course, Youtube!

In fact one can have a sahityam using plenty of pa and ma letters in the raga niroshta...

In the Niroshta thllana and Rajarajarajidhe kriti, the sahithyam also devoids pa and ma. It is also niroshta (without meeting of the lips)
