I watched the webcast for about an hour and half.
Practically no audio.
The pictures were good and froze more often.
I could see most of our members.
Thank you all !
I hope a video will be available courtesy of Sri Nageswaran.
I would have loved to see Uday's demo in full with Ravikiran's commentary.
Hope you will oblige.
Good night to you all from my end..

Extremely sorry about the glitches, this is for the first time we tried at a place without checking out the mobile towers or with out a microphone i guess that is the reason for the real poor audio.(That was indeed wrong,we have managed to put an edited version now of the full 90 minutes to about 35 but still cant do much on the audio for the video front)(same link)
Thankfully we have documented the entire audio here through our live radio broadcast and is archived here
http://www.spreaker.com/user/parivadini ... shri-udays this is of better quality and will get my edit team to work on this and try some sync et all.

Thanks
Venkat

PS: Trying to do some edits retrieval should try to get a fairly decent one by EOD

Thanks to all who hosted, all who organised, all who came, all who cooked --- and all that have to clean up afterwards. It was a pleasure to be at Ravikiran's house along with all the rasikas.org friends, including the rasikas.org host himself, without whom none of this could happen.

Uday's demo went off very well, and was augmented by Ravikiran and Narmada as well as by thoughts and questions from other rasikas.

That was an excellent, memorable get together we had at Sri Ravikiran's house today. The Kirans (including Sri Narasimhan- Ravikiran's father) hosted the event in a very friendly, musically illuminating manner. Joined in by around 20 forumites from far and near, the gathering was simply serene.

The commitment of respected Sri Nageswaran in organising the members was acknowledged by all.

A demo of Chitravenu by Udayshankar showed his innovativeness and love of musical labour (in putting together an altogether new Vadya).

It was great to have the founder of rasikas.org Sri Ramakrishnan at the meet. An epitome of humility, he is!

Parivadini- the welcome member to the forum was represented by Sri Venkataraghavan.

The samaaraadhana(lunch) was as elegant as the gathering!

Hope the group photo will be uploaded early.

It was a wonderful gathering. I had a great time.

Special thanks to all the people behind the event - Our gracious hosts Sri Ravikiran and Smt Lata; The organizer Sri Nageswaran mama, and all the rasikas from around the world (and around the corner) that participated with great zeal. And a special shout-out to Srkris, the reason for all of us interacting in this manner in the first place!

And special thanks to Uday for a superb demo that segued into a very interesting discussion on gamakas, staccato playing, melharmony and morphed into a greater discussion on bani and the essence of music itself. The discussion took on a new dimension with the participation of Sri Ravikiran and Dr. Narmadha. I was delighted to have even been a part of this! The very scholarly discussion ended on a lighter note with Sri MKR's inimitable imitations of great artistes.

The hospitality shown by the entire family of Sri Ravikiran (Shashikiran, Ganesh and all of their disciples) was remarkable.

I look forward to seeing all of you again at various sabhas this season.

Oh and it was great to see CRama on the road to recovery, having gained a good part of his vision back! He gave a very emotional note of thanks at the end of the gathering.

Ramesh, thank you for the picture. Sri Venkat, thank you for the archived video.
On behalf of the unfortunate who could not attend, let me also chime in and thank SRkris (Ramakrishnan) for forming the forum, all the members for continuing to provide us with unending pleasure, knowledge, and camaraderie, Sri Nageshwaran for organizing the get together, the extended Kiran family for graciously hosting the motley crowd, Uday for demonstrating the chitavENu, and everyone who attended for making it memorable.
Recently, I was in a position where I was not able to get on the internet for 48 hours..the first site I visited when I was able to was rasikas!

What a gathering it was!

May there be more and more titles conferred upon our host!

All of us were warmly welcomed by Lata and Ravikiran in their lovely home. We felt their hospitality in everything they said and did for us when we were there.

After its debut in Cleveland, the chitravenu was presented again, Uday impressing us all. Its sound was very pleasing to the ears. Uday's dedication (magnificent obsession, may we call it?) was revealed to us in its every aspect--his dedication, hours upon hours spent on developing it and the way in which he constantly thinks of improving it. Radhika by his side, and little Ananya too who when asked by Raviran to sing when her father played the Venkata kavi song, felt too shy to comply.

Shashikiran and Ganesh joined us. Kiranavali and her daughter arrived. We got a glimpse into how the Narasimhan clan grew up. It was visible in a flash for us, the minute the little one sat down and started putting tALam to what Uday was playing!

It was very good to see Sri.Narasimhan taking part in the discussion before he left home for an engagement.

When Dr. Narmada arrived, it was something to witness and hear the exchange between the two string players. MKR mentioned the inspiration perspiration ratio at some point. Highly gifted as these artistes were even as children, we realized how very hard they had worked--practicing, practicing, their inspiration taking a second place! But the sweat and the tears would have been sweet to them perhaps, second nature to them, knowing as we do of how far they have come...

A sumptuous lunch was laid out downstairs, pleasing to the eye and palate. Ecologically correct biodegradable (areca nut bark??) dinner plates were there for lunch, and bowls for dessert. Again, the hosts attended to us with care, Ganesh and his wife Bhargavi (pardon my aging brain cells if I got her name wrong :(
).
I thank Ganesh for offering me more dessert which I ate with thoughts of our absent friends from rasikAs.
It was great to have srkris among us--the force behind our forum, this young man who is a quiet worker and has shunned the limelight all along--the one we take for granted too. Of the moderators, we missed VK, CML and Lakshman. We missed others who couldn't come and those who said they will come and did not turn up.

Of course, thanks to Parivadini for making many rasikAs feel happy by sharing this event on the web. The team is covering a lot of the season's happenings this year...

It really was a memorable day. Like Cienu and his family in Bengaluru, the Chitravina family welcomed the Rasika clan into their home, and let us get a feel for the music that reverberates in their special homes...

It was nice to see you all from afar.

Thanks very much Arasi for the wonderful writeup and Mahavishnu/Lata for the picture.

Though the webcast was intermittent, it was there often enough to get a good idea of the proceedings. Parivadini is indeed making waves with this kind of live-casting events over the web. This is a great development this year. Thanks Venkat and the rest of the Parivadini team.

I did see that little girl putting thalam to Uday's playing. Thanks Arasi for mentioning who that child was. The discussion among Dr. Narmadha, Ravikiran and others was quite interesting. I will watch it again since I could only get small snippets of it live. These kinds of impromptu discussions about music among the top artists in CM are hard to come by for ordinary rasikas like us. This is all possible only due to the tireless organizing efforts of Sri. Nageswaran. Thank you Sir. Our sincere thanks and appreciation to Ravikiran and Lata Ganapathy for hosting the meet and participating actively.

Participants, Organizers and Hosts: you are indeed the crazy thieves of Palavakkam, having stolen our hearts with your enthusiasm and generosity of spirit.

Thanks for the audio on Uday demo.
I could get glimpses of the versatility of ChitraveNu!
Especially his forays into HM bass simply melts the heart.

Thanks arasi for the sum up of the milieu.

DEMONSTRATION OF CHITRA VENU BY UDAY SHANKAR:
I was happy to see the DEMO. It was quite good. GLAD to see UDAY S has improved the instrument by quite a bit. However I STILL FEEL that his observations based ON HIS PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE+THEORY that properties esp the sound it produced, quality etc are dominated by treating it as an air column are not adequate.I feel based on bitter experiences with Laser Resonators etc that SUBTLE upper& sub Harmonics affect the sound produced. For example I noticed the upper registers were easily produced but the lower end I felt was not PERFECTLY produced. Of course I am close to 80 & have not tested my ears in the last year.I would like some clarification & education from the Genius tribe of Ravi Kiran in this case UDAY...I was PARTICULARLY happy to see UDAY'S wife&daughter. :-BD
REg the 5 kattai being so potent-Mali's flute was given as example-again I have my own UNSUBSTANTIATED THEORY BASED ON POWER SPECTRUM & RESONANCES why it seems to fill the space so fully. As is well known there are standing waves created due to mostly reflections from the surroundings-walls etc- for specific frequencies that can work in an additive fashion. In support I wish to point out that LGJ went from the usual 4 to 2.5 for his violin which was AN INNOVATION that was criticised but the audience VOTED for it; Actually LGJ smartly said Music is for people and not the other way around!
ALL my wind bagging here can be called analogous to the "Poor Man's Bathroom singing efforts" problem where songs always sound good except when the enclosure volume is increased. I contend that it is these kinds of factors which result in people claiming- including MMI&PSP- that Nootrukal Mandapam IN TIRUCHY was superior etc. I ACTUALLY CLAIM that the keethu kottai old M.A. in Music Academy inP.S.High School was far superior to today's fancy M.A. Auditorium-KAEETHU Kottai being an aproximation of Greek open air amphi theater generally considered best-. GNB'S SARASA SAMADHANA THERE WITH PALGHT RAGHU IS STILL UNMATCHED IN MY MEMORY!I rest with the observation that there are what are called ZERO SOUND locations in N.Y.Metropolitan Opera where even Pavarotti or Maria Callas sound terrible at best....
LOOKING FOR SOME EDUCATION & ELUCIDATION. VKV
P.S.: AS USUAL Ravi Kiran ELEVATED the LEVEL of the get together.... :-BD :ymapplause:

Mahavishnu,
Thanks for the video of the Rasikas meeting. I could see who is who with the names given below. Thank you. Arasi's write-up explained the going ons at the gathering and my thanks to her. Everyone seemed so happy and the picture looked like a family gathering. I am glad that it went off very well and everybody had a good time. I cannot see the Parivardhini video- (I can see the You Tube). There was no sound and it stopped right there. Would like to see Uday's demo and more pictures of members. Atlast, we could see the original organizer, srikris, in this picture. Thanks to all who made it possible for us to see the meeting!

Congratulations to Sri Ravikiran on his latest award.

It was great hanging out with all.

KUDOS TO SHRI NAGESHWARAN FOR HELPING PULL THIS MEET TOGETHER.

As regards chitravenu, thanks all for the comments.

It's a crazy challenge going from physics via engineering via machine shop to tone production and finally music making...I sometimes wonder why I'm even doing this, losing sleep, health and precious time with family! Suddenly, my day job seems very attractive :).

From my limited experience, the biggest challenge is not the sound or tone production, all the problems can be eventually solved, but it is the playing of the instrument. It is an enormous tightrope walk maintaining tunefulness...with both breath and hands affecting the sound and plunging you into an abyss on either side. Under the circumstance, the demo could have gone better if I had restricted myself to snippets and phrases rather than attempt a sophisticated kriti, esp. one that my daughter has learned! Oh well...one learns as one goes along.

Thanks Ramesh (mahavishnu), Sivaramakrishnan, Rajesh and for making this interaction very fruitful.

VKV sir,
Interesting thoughts. As you realize, we begin with theoretical assumption as a starting point and then lapse into the business of practical problem solving without any heed to the underlying theory. My first boss in digital electronic design used to say...to solve the high frequency noise, just spray the circuit board randomly with .1 muF decoupling capacitors and hope for the best! Much theory went out the window right there.

I like your theory of the standing wave patterns and reflections at 5 or 5.5 kattais. You realize it it is intimately harmonically related to 2 and 2.5 kattais too ! That's why I was saying that these two shruti ranges are ideal. Hariprasad Chaurasia plays at 2 kattais. Of course, I handn't though about the music chamber acoustics. I am still at the level of the pipe. Perhaps I can make a trip to Los Alamos sometime and hang out and talk...

Much thanks to maestro Shri Chitravina Ravikiran, Lata, Bhargavi and others of the family for being such pefect hosts and making this such a memorable occassion. I am happy that "paaku mattai" plates were used.

Agreed, VK :)

Rajesh,
Of course you should! We all had such a good time, enough can't be said about the time we spent in the company of eminent musicians.

Ravikiran's concert this evening at Partha was another global treat--The concert musician who is heard all over the globe gave a most satisfying concert in the company of SK Tiruchi Sankaran of Canada , Ranjani Ramakrishnan of the US and Purushotham on the khanjira...

But you are the master of CM technicalities.
Especially I love to hear your objective comments on Uday demo!

I think you should have said B S Purushothaman of Bangalore.

So long as we don't get Cauveri water, Bangalore is definitely outside our country and belongs in the international scene! :))

I received a personal invitation to attend the program "The Flower Gatherers" featuring Anil Srinivasan and Sikkil Gurucharan.

It would have been squirrelly (Merriam-Webster dictionary gives the meaning as "very odd, silly, or foolish") of me not to have attended.

What was for lunch?

Well, don't tell me; I may fall into a bout of melancholy at having missed a good lunch.

Those of us who could not attend the Meet are eager to hear and see every little thing that happened there (including Nick's falling into the Maid's arms!). Sorry, Nick- Just a joke. I liked the way you wrote 'falling into the pretty maid's arms!'. I guess she caught you on time. We would like to see more pictures of the members. Thanks in advance, Rajesh.

Folks: here is a teaser-- would like to put my 10 cent into this although I cannot be as articulate as rajesh--right now I am busy(!!) with hospital duties--plenty of time to kill but being a digital neanderthal that I am have no acces to a computer(no smart phone--the word preceding 'phone' is an oxymoron!!).lots of useless trivia to report(.my forte)!!--just afew for starters.
1. RK and family were delightfully gracious and hospitable--RK was non-intrusive in general and let the discussions flow freely but when things needed clarfication he "pitched in--no condescension,no chest-thumping with anecdotes(he has LOT to be proud about). Ofcoure the exchanges between Udhay,Mahavishnu(my pet-namesake!!),Sivaramakrihnan on some of the technical aspects of sounds, srthi etc .were alien to me or as VKV would put it "way above my pay grade!!!)RK's MELHARMONY initiative which forumites have been exposed to before--is a laudable initiative and takes a serious crack(in my opinion) at the current "dilettantist approach towards the so-called "fusion music and elevates it to a much highr level in terms of musical undertanding and appreciation. I detected in RK's explanations ---terse as thy were-- several insights into his repertoire, knowledge, sufficiently respectful of our traditions/conventions and yet not totally dismissive of them under the pretext of innovation. If there is one artist who can bridge various systems of music--taking the best out of each, not denigrating any other system --to help civil and sane dialogue, it is RAVI KIRAN in my opinion. To be hailed a s ayoung prodigy can be a curse--we have all seen in our lives many cases=--yet RK has managed thanks to his impressive lineage(RK's Father-Respected - Sri Chitra Vina Narsimhan was there briefly and guided the discussions without being condescending or authoritative). That RK despite reaching the pinacle and still strives to advance the frontiers of musical understanding(instead of sitting on his laurels and encomiums) is proof that he genuinely seeks to be a Nada Yogi.
last but not least to host an event for rasikas amidst his pressing engagements(he had 2 engagements after our event!) and to steer some of us--the "gabbies"--myself included--towards closure--RK deserves credit for tact and crowd-dircting skills!!
RK's wife Lata was warm and friendly and attended to us unobtrusively. The entire family went to great lengths to make us all feel comfortable although each of them had other pressing enagements.

I must say --in my own 6 decades of moving with artists- and watched their onstage and off-stage behavio/mores--I have not encountered many rasika-friendly artistes like RK and his family.

My late father always used to tell me how impressed he was with RK's demeanour on and off stage. I saw ample proof of that observation.

I wish RK and his family all the success in their musical missions. My sincere thanks to our fellow forumites--Nageswaran,Nick,Rajeshnat et al for their initiatives inkeeping our forum alive.

Dear all

I didn't realise this was such a long thread :) I don't visit rasikas too much but decided to pop by to see what people were saying about the 2013 season and I chanced on this! I wished to say that it was an absolute delight to host the rasikas meet at our home last Sunday. It's wonderful that a group of global connoisseurs of the arts is able to pull off such a meet each year.

I posted some pictures on Facebook. Here are some links

This may be a weird way to share the pics but hope you get to see them anyway!

And Nick, should have warned you of the step :)

Cheers

L ata: I hope I can take the liberty of addressing you so informally--I may not have the rank but I am certainly much much older than you!!

I am not on Facebook(because I was afraid they may BOOK my FACE!!--so I am not able to access the pics.

Can any of the digitally-savvy forumites suggest a way of accessing short of asking me to join the face book!!
Thanks in advance.

Shri Ramasubramanian - Of course you and all the others can call me 'Lata' :)

Hmmm let me figure out how to add images here. Will ask Uday if I am unsuccessful.

Cheers

@Lata: Looks like Sri Kailasam has already uploaded the pics :)
The simplest way is to upload them to a site like tinypic.com (or equivalent site) and copy the image tag that it generates.
