arasi: thank you for posting "valli naayaka vaa.." - am listening to the niraval at "tandai neeye.." as I write... a really evocative rendition by Sumitra Nitin, a pleasure indeed!

knandago,
Thank you for listening so quickly to the song. 'vaLLinAyakanE vA' is how it goes (not vaLLi nAyakA). I will pass on your compliments to Sumitra. She sang it within a week of learning it.

Vk,
Thanks for listening.

Lakshman,
Thanks a lot for posting the songs from the CD!

Rajesh,
I thank you for your concern for me and your enthusiasm for my songs. I know, you feel the old woman should get to work on them before it is too late! I will try my best. When I am back in India, I will report to you on my progress. You will get to hear some of the songs before they get published in some form, I assure you. A list of an alphabetical order of the songs won't be a problem. Once again, I appreciate your caring about the elders in the forum family :)

Vgvindan,
I just saw this page. Thanks a lot for taking the trouble of posting the songs! My computer cannot read them though!
With your erudition in the languages, you could perhaps answer Suji's question? As you know, the songs come to me even in languages I am not that familiar with. I did run them by experts in those languages, and 'padamu' was not corrected. pada IS used, I would guess, as in 'pada pankajamula' and so on...

arasi,
padamu, padamule all are valid. Just checked it myself.
The following site confirms that- a nice song I heard when I was a kid.

:cool:! But you must have some knowledge of those languages (i.e. to speak and/or to understand)? Otherwise even more :cool:!

arasi,
erudition in the languages
Looking up dictionary for every other word is not erudition.

I would welcome corrections for the transliterated versions so that I could trim my software, but You say your computer cannot read them - unfortunate.

I can prepare pdf version, if you so desire for your verification.

mahakavi wrote:Another thread dealt with the genesis of a composition--the process, the context, and the culimination. I wrote those two pieces inspired by all the attention that was bestowed on arasi. In my own mind, I conceived it when I was tossing and turning in bed in the middle of the night. The subject theme came to me first, then the ambience/setting for the song, and then the words started forming. When they started rolling, I got up and jotted down the rough format. In the morning I went over it and changed a few words, rearranged a few and that is it. I didn't attempt to refine it further, as you noticed about the candam, nor did I have any musical instruction ever to think about the fit for (or even hum the song in) any rAgam. Hence the rough edges in the two songs I wrote.
As I am perusing this thread and enjoying the musical compositions of Arasi, I thought I would reply to your thoughts on composition methods. I believe that composition methods vary widely - some people compose the sahitya first and then set it to music, others invent a tune that they like and then compose the sahitya, yet others (like me) start with a nebulous mixture of raga and sahitya and then "polish" both simultaneously. This has an advantage in that the composer can "match" the sahitya and raga bhava as they are created, rather than having to "fit" one to the already existing other. I agree that in a few hours one can come up with a reasonable sahitya that makes one's point and follows basic prosody guidelines. But much of the work begins at that point - e.g. in Sanskrit many different words can say the same thing, but one would pick words that best fit the flow of the music which is being conceived simultaneously, and vice versa. In addition, one can work in alankaras like yamakas, svaraksharas, mudras (composer, raga), gopuccha, srotovaha etc.

I believe that Dikshitar (MD) probably followed this latter style. In comparison to Tyagaraja (T), my impression is that MD's disciples and their successors did not have to "polish" his compositions much further, if at all. In the case of T, the disciples and their descendents probably had some continuing role in "polishing" his compositions (many of which he may have first sung extempore in an "unpolished" form).

I am not sure if there is kannada number with rhythmic phrases( deem tOm)like what you would hear in neelakanta sivan's tamil number anandanadanamAduvAr in poorvikalyAni .That is what I heard with this nAtyamAdo which was a fast number .So she has filled a great gap.
There are quite a few dEvaranAmas. "tAtattatt taddhimi ene harikuNidADidane" for one There ae several others.

Many of know that some of her compositions have been sung by Smt. Sumitra Nitin. Here is a video clip of a student of Smt. Sunanda Narayanan (Smt. Sumitra's sister), performing nATyamADO naTarAjA (pUrvIkalyANI, Adi tALam):

http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=Cu1_oFfTj ... re=related

Lyric: Smt. Rajee Krishnan
Music: Smt. Rajee Krishnan
Choreography: Smt. Sunanda Narayanan
Dancer: Ms. Tara Krishnan (at her arangETram)

Smts. Sunanda and Sumitra are the daughters of Smt. Sujata Vijayaraghavan; both of them danced as gOpIs in naukA caritam choreographed and produced by their guru, Smt. Rhadha, for Madras Doordarshan.

Oops! I fixed some bloopers in the original post - The dancer is Ms. Tara Krishnan who is a student of Smt. Sunanda Narayanan. Arasi's songs were composed with the tune in-situ.

Thanks Shankar.
Congratulations Arasi!
The song (lyrics), the music and the interpretation by Tara Krishnan are excellent. It is evident that your compositions are as appropriate to the dance stage as much as they are at the concert platform!

CML,

From the clip, the singer is identified as one Ms. Geeta Murali - I assume she is the vocalist who sings for arangETrams for Smt. Sunanda. No clue about the dancer either - must be a girl from around the Boston area - she had done a great job - and the choreography is very neat, and elegant. I assume it is in the vazhuvUr style - reminds me of Smt. Kamala Lakshman dancing to vazhuvUrAr's choreography for 'edukittanai mODi'!

I noticed the dancer anticipating the singer at times (e.g., .tale meel gangeyu chandra prabheyu).
Is this usual ?

Thank you all for enjoying Tara's performance, and many thanks for your kind words about me. Tara is a high school student from Boston--one of Sunanda Narayanan's students at her Thillai Fine Arts Academy in Newton.
By the way, Sunanda Narayanan is dancing during the season, with her sister Sumitra Nitin singing for her, on the 31st of December...

nAtyamADO, not ADu, as it is sung here. Of course, kannaDigAs would find a few more 'not so perfectly pronounced' words. KannaDa isn't the sweet-voiced singer's mother tongue...

The singer is not anticipating the dancer - the dancer is half a beat behind. This does not bother me much. The situation when the dancer is leading the singer (half a beat ahead) that I find irritating. The ideal will be when the lyric and the action are in perfect synch. These issues with synchronizing happen when the dancer is not clear about the words - that is why I try to provide word-to-word meanings, so that the word and the verb can issue out together - and truly create a 'driSya kAvya' when they merge.

A lot of youtube videos have the audio and video out of sync. I think this may be the case in this clip as well.

Although 'ADu' could mean "to dance" in situations like this - the common usage- especially in spoken kannaDa- for the word is "to play", and that's why Manjunath must have translated it as "to play with Shakti".

"ADu" is very versatile word that can accompany a number of actions :), some of which are listed here:

(ATa) ADu = to play
(mAtannu) ADu = to say
suLidADu = to move around
kuNidADu = to dance
haridADu = to float around
nalidADu = be happy about
OdADu = to run around, to move about
