Curious to know who the violinist with the sense of humor is. Shouldn't mind being credited with this joke :-)

Allow me please to add...

Why is dhrutham a clap and a wave?

Because if you clap when putting talam in the audience I will wave goodbye to you

In a performance Chembai was accompanied by T.Rukmini on violin. In the anupallavi ofthe song 'gAnamurthe' he sang'mAnini maNI "T RUKMINI" mAnasApa instead of ShriRukmini, T Rukmini being the violinist GOBILALITHA

I think Chembai mAmA (thAthA) tops the list for on stage and off stage humor. Wasn't he the one who sang thayE yasodA and pointed to each of the gOpAlakRSNans after each sangati. MSG for Violin and TVG for mridangam.

MDR sang rAmanai ninai manamE (his own composition in sindhubhairavI). He sang jayarAman ninai manamE and pointed to LGJ on the violin and sivarAmanai ninai manamE and pointed to UKS on the mridangam. (May be he would have sung kODanDarAmanai ninai if umayALpuram kODanDarAmayyAr was on the ghatam! :P )

And if our Raman was playing the morsing then it will come back to square one and MDR would be back to Ramanai Ninai Maname ?

To continue with the name funs ..... (this is a gopuchayathi joke)

One ghatam vidwan went to a sabha secretary where he was not being considered for quite a long time. He just made a humble request and a gentle reminder to the sabha secretary that he was being ignored for long.

Then the sabha secretary enquired r u free on 24th December ?
The ghatam vidwan said : Yes

Veeramani - Pattu

Ramani - Violin (of course it is only for a joke without the names of real personalities)

Mani - Mridangam

Nee (Nee in tamil means you ie pointing finger towards the ghatam artiste and saying)- Ghatam

when the "ThanjAvur VaidyanAtha VaidyanAtha Iyer" school for percussion was started in 1995 , UKS sir used to come and monitor the classes regularly... During one such occasion which i vividly remember as i was in 5th std then , he asked a parent " Paiyyan nalla sAdhakham panrAnA"?

To which the parent replied- "adhellam correct ah sAdham saptutu nalla gam nu irukkan"....

Arvind, they said so because, during the interview itself UKS Sir explained how much effort and practice is needed to master the art and he added, "oru paya irundhAn... sAdhagamnA, sAdhaththai sApttuttu gammunu irukkaradhunnu nenaichuNduttAn, but it is not like that, practice well and play well" (there was one boy, who thought sAdhagam is nothing but, eating sAdham and be idle) :)

so, the parents answered like that...

Does sAdhgam also mean adhesive since, cooked rice being used to paste envelops, sAdha-gum? then it will be sAdhA-gum (ordinary gum).

Though rice is vegetarian, if you call it ordinary, it becomes non-veg. (Adu-goat/nari-fox)

I appreciate your writing your name as Arvind and not
(half)ara-wind! :)

Mridhangam - I think you missed the pun.

gatham in sanskrit meaning ' gone ' and 'khatam' in Hindi meaning ' finished'.

After a dhivyanAma bhajan, I found that I have misplaced my bike's sAvi and my friends searched it and found it under a jamakkALam!

On seeing it, as an effect of the puNdareekams that we heard throughout the bhajan like,

sadhguru swAmiki - jay
rAmachandhra mUrthiki - jay
AnjanEya swamiki -jay,

I said: "kinetic honda key"
friends: jay...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was talking to shrI sreenivasan (a disciple of Palghat shrI Mani Iyer) and he shared some interesting advertisements about the concerts of those days...

1. Concert this week in our sabha - Thamizhnadu-Mysore-Kerala

2. don't miss "mummaNigaLum oru mANikkamum" (three precious stones and a ruby)

many of our rasika members might knew the names, but, I just want others to keep guessing for a while...

Tamil Nadu / Karnataka / Kerala could be Ariyakudi [ os SSI or GNB or MMI] / Chowdiah / Mani Iyer.

I think this
1st Mani: G N Balasubramanium (Vocal)
2nd Mani: Palakkad Mani Iyer (Mridangam)
3rd Mani: Pazhani Subrahmanya Pillai (Khanjira)
One Manickkam: Kumbakonam Rajamanikkam Pillai (Violin)

(infact, bale is what you get when you prove you are able)

if not II AC or III AC, it might be a full bench concert, RAC - 6 AC!

"halwa vekkaradu" I believe is a colloquial slang that roughly (and euphemistically) means "getting the better of someone else". This can help explain tirunelvElikkE halwa. Of course there are couple of other undercurrents there, tirunelvEl halwa (ah! ah!) is famous, and JB is from tirunelvEli district

RAC - waiting list IIRC.

alva is not vecchufied, its kuduthufied. and it means to emaathify... like maaricha tried to emaathify rama by posing as a golden deer ;)

Sita: "O Lord, i saw a golden deer"
smart Rama: "tirunelvelikke alva kudukkaraya?"

Thanks, Venkat! You explained it so well. Arun is happy too, I guess. In our days, the same was expressed as 'taNNi kATTugiradu (literally aqua--the other meaning had not come into vogue then).

Mannarkoil is a few kilometes from Ambasamudram.

SRI VEDHANARAYANAR Rajagopalaswami Kulasekara Azhwar temple is situated at Mannarkovil. (Link below)

If a bhAgavathar is given lot of fruits and other things along with his remuneration, what song will he sing?

He might be in need of a cover or carry bag. So, looking at the offerings and sishya, .... "bag-a borrow bag-a borrow" to carry these items.
