Dear Balaji,

Thankyou so much for bringing out the lyrics of these kritis..I guess I was in search for this for few years..Any track of the audio clippings available with anybody??

I am from Tripunithura only ..and thanks again for the link on the Temple..

Infact ,the closing lines written by some "UtsavaBraanthan" was too good..I can really appreciate it!!

I have even resigned my jobs abroad to attend the Utsavams!! Hahaha..

Thanks again and would look forward to hear the availablity of the audio clippings..

Well, I guess you all must be aware about the MDR Day being celebrated in TPRA on 26th of May?? This year it is TM Krishna singing ..I got this message from Sri CRR Varma ,Kaudiar Palce, yes Prince Rama Varma's father..

Best Regards,

Ajith

tOyajAri Sekhara
tOyam - water (jalam)
tOyajA - lotus (padmam)
tOyajAri - moon (candran)
tOyajAri - candraSEkaran (sadASivan)

Beautiful beautiful beautiful.

I know of any one other composition with this usage. The nearest I can come with is muttusvAmi dikSitar's "tOyajAsanadI sevita parE" in annapUrNE (sAmA). I'm sure I have heard tOyajAsana for brahmadEvan and tOyajAkSi for lakSmi/ambAL/sarasvati like this before. But I'm hearing tOyajAri for the first time. Is there any other kriti with that usage or is this work of our one and only MDR?

Oh thank you thank you DRS.

Both of these words (abja Satru and tOyajAri) have the exactly same meaning, my question was only about tOyajAri with the usage tOyam for water, about which you have answered in you second post. Thank you.

In fact, a google search with the word gave me only tOyajAri from koluvaiyunnADE, not even the MDR kriti. So can I now conclude that there only two kritis employing this word?

No they are not the same.Actually jalaruhamitra is sun while abjaSatru is moon. So He has the sun and moon as his 2 eyes.
So can I now conclude that there only two kritis employing this word?
I wouldnt be too sure of that. There could well be more.

abjaSatru

ap= water; abja= that which is born of water; a lotus (same as jalaja, tOyaja, nIraja etc). It additionaly also has meaning sof fish, conch and the moon itself (as all are born from water). The most popular meaning is that of a lotus.

abjaSatru- enemy of the lotus; the moon.

M. D. Ramanathan Day at Tirupunithura / Kerala
For the fifth year, R. Krishnamoorthy, an ardent fan of the legendary musician M. D. Ramanathan will be organising MDR day on May 20 at Tirupunithura in Kerala. Hailing from Kochi, R. Krishnamoorthy has been trying to bring the rasikas of MDR's music and the musicians together, by way of a tribute to the late M. D. Ramanathan on his birth anniversary every year.
Krishnamoorthy is particular that the singers, invited for the tribute, sing exclusively MDR's composition on that day. "Moorthy's friends have been suggesting to him that the musicians may be encouraged to sing pieces that were favourites of MDR, rather than insisting on MDR compositions exclusively, but he is adament and anyone who heard Shri Sanjay Subrahmnaiam on May 20th, 2006 would have to agree with Moorthy that great MDR compositions if presented well can invoke the presence of the legendary musician himself." says C. R. R. Varma.
So far Moorthy has not accepted any kind of donation for the MDR Day despite expenses; he does it purely out of love for the music of this fine musician.
Though the birth anniversary falls on May 20, the MDR day will be observed on May 26, due to non-availablity of space to host the concerts at Tirupunithura.
Mridangist Palakkad T. R. Rajamani will inaugurate the homage at 5pm. This will be followed by a vocal concert of T. M. Krishna, accompanied by T. H. Subrahmaniam on the violin and Trissur C. Narendran on the violin. This concert will feature exclusive MDR's compositions.
Venue : Oottupura Malika, Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple, Tripunithura.
For more details contact the organiser R. Krishnamurthy, Ernakulam on phone nos. 91 - 484- 6586518, (0) 92494 14305.

Hello all members,
I want to know whether Sri. MDR had sung Deva deva kalayamithe in any of the concerts and if anybody has got the recording of the same it would be great if they can upload it.

Thanks,

Hi, I am just reading all the postings under this thread... I started uploading some of MDR collections from known sources (non-commercial) in sangeethapriya.com, please see

http://www.sangeethapriya.org/~hariharan/MDR/

If you can help to identify the concert, accompanists, place, date etc, it will be great...

We keep hearing about MDR's quick wit and his sly humor - here is a subtle example:
Recently, I had an opportunity to hear him render 'hariyum haranum onrE enru ariyAdavarum uLarO'...and the kicker was at the very end: where he had inserted a quick 'oru shilar uLarE'!

It is blissful to go through these threads with MDR's Kaligiyuntegada playing in the background! I am one more enamored listener. I have just not heard any better rendition of a Keeravani than MDR's!!

Much to my disappointment, almost all links to the audio clips have expired. Has all available material been uploaded to sangeethapriya.org, or is there much more that hasn't?

When I was a three-year old, the great musician MD Ramanathan treated me with a ‘Masale Dose’. The story goes like this. I waited for a particular song and he didn’t sing it in his concert. My uncle, who knew the singer personally, took me the next day to where MDR was staying. The singer asked me what ‘M.D.’ stood for in his name and it seems I said ‘Masale Dose’ . And not only did he treat me with my favourite number, he treated me with my favourite dish as well!
