Since most people focus on and are familar with Devan's novels, I spoke about his ' mini-series, articles and short stories'.
Pointed out many which have not been printed as books. Many of the details will be familiar to those who follow my Devan's posts in my blog.I will write about other aspects later in my blog.

I prefaced it with some music-related incidents from Mythili , because of Sanjay's musical performance.
Mythili, Devan's first novel, is a classic Mistaken Identity based comedy , where the hero is mistaken
for musician. Hence the novel has some "music-related" details and jokes which I narrated.
Also I paid tribute to Sri Gopulu .

All in all, it was great seeing so many "sahrudaya-s' and in particular, Sri Gopulu.

Thank you for your response to CML's questions. You make us proud, representing Devan's fans from abroad by participating in and contributing considerably to this special event.

Rani Maindan's report in Dinamani says what a simple man Devan was. He was simple, even in those simple old days, and I'm happy the stage did not abound with a backdrop of juxtaposed multicolored banners!

Devan, the a man who led a simple life, wielded a mighty pen. His imagination was simply fantastic, his characters, some of them larger than life. Still, in all the humor which teemed in his writing, we see undercurrents of his fine studies in human nature. He gave us the illusion that what he offered us was light-reading (that's how even women who could just about read, could also be excited about his stories).

What Ambai says is very true. In that time period, when women were mostly depicted as helpless beings (many were, too!), even the damsels in distress in Devan's works are gutsy, communicative and were quick to act. What's more, they were interesting and intelligent to grab our attention as we looked at them with Gopulu's animated illustrations every week in Anada Vikatan.

I had read Annam's writing and have appreciated it during those years. Didn't know that he was Devan's nephew! Surely, he would know about details of Devan's interest in music. Sanjay started the concert with DEva DEva, which was apt. To me, vElaiyyA dayavillaiyA? represents Devan's devotion for vElavan, and his countless pleas to Murugan to bestow a child to him and his wife. Also wonder if sAvEri was a rAgam he was partial to!

For Devan fans, your taking part in his centenary and bringing reports about it makes it very special for us...

arasi, was it Gopulu or (more likely) Mali during Devan's time at Ananda Vikatan?

According to 'Annam' : Devan was a Life-member of Music Academy and encouraged him and others to attend Music Performances.
But he was not too keen on Dances or Films. In fact, if it is a dance, such as by Kamala, Lalitha-Padmini or Vyjayanthimala,
Devan will get the Sabha tickets back from them , making sure they won't attend !

If I'm not mistaken, it was SVV's stories which carried Mali's illustrations.

Did Raju draw for Devan's stories in the beginning? I'm sure Pasupathy would know. Gopulu worked on most of them, is my guess.

Devan's stories were illustrated by many artists......but I have yet to find and been searching for a Mali-illustrated Devan story...
( Devan's earliest articles/stories such as Rajamani might have been...nobody is able to clarify this ) ....
I have a Malathi "novel" by Devan in my blog ..illustrated by Ravi who later went to and drew in Kumudam )
Unfortunately Mali passed away in early 40-s . Hence most of Devan's stories at Vikatan
were illustrated by others.
It was Mali who hired Gopulu (gave him the name) .... Most of SVV's stories were illustrated by Raju.
( Mali also hired Raju +Silpi....)
Devan's early novels ( Sambu, Gomathiyin Kadhalan, Kalyani) were illustrated by Raju.
Then Miss Janaki, Sudarsanam, Jagannathan , Lakshmi Kadaksham, CID Chandru ....all were by Gopulu.
Hence Gopulu-Devan were often called as "irattai nAyanam"...)

Thank you for bringing them this day. Yes, it was customary to have a paNDigaip pATTu (pongal, puthANDu too) in the special festival issues...

The second one in madhyamAvathi was sung in a radio concert several years ago by Sanjay. Wonder if it's available on the web now.

Simply love this!

Gopulu hasn't made a transition to his own light and lively line drawings yet, shows traces of the density of Raju's illustrations, but the light in the picture is simply adorable--and the expressions on each individual face!

Dear Prof. Pasupathy,
When I was first year Itntermediate student in M.C.C.(in the fIfties) Sir C.V.RAMAN gave a talk in which I STILL REMEMBER ONE SENTENCE ABOUT THE FAMOUS MAX.BORN calling him "The pontific idiot from the continent" (he had a mini qurrrel on Specific heat area with him; Also the only sentence I followed in the whole talk was" Heat expands Bodies"...I have slightly improved my ignorance in physics since then!
Also at the end of the talk I hung around to note down anything he said & he just said he was hungry. I ran to Selaiyur hall mess & got a couple of idlis& poori potato. He was happy & said you run fast! After several years when I met him at a meeting I told him this story ; Surprisingly he remembered it but cautioned me running fast may or may not help in Physics. After struggling for sixty years I AGREE!....THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES. VKV

Correct.!
It is a sari which is getting dried on a horizontal bar hung at an height of about 10 feet.
Why should it be in the kitchen and not in the open air where there is sun aplenty, how to put the wet cloth at such an height( particularly a long sari) ( the technique ,the tools ) why should it not be at a convenient lower level are some questions which are very difficult to explain to any person less than 60 years of age, who might not have seen it.
" மடி கொடி ", as it is called, is a fast disappearing cultural vestige. I wish it goes to the bharathanatyam repertoire whichalready has the
மத்து, உரி ,தயிர் கடைதல் etc..
