Re: Sangita Kalanidhi 2015
KVC sir: With all due respect, that comment was in poor taste. Clearly that man had no respect for his wife of many years, no matter what he thought of the culture she came from. It reveals more about that person, his misogyny and cultural confusion than about anything else.

This is interesting:

Re: Sangita Kalanidhi 2015
Mahavishnu, kudos to you for speaking out on that indecent and unacceptable "joke" posted by KV Chellappa.
Sure, as Mahavishnu points out, KV Chellappa's "joke" shows the Tamil man had no respect for his (American) wife of many years, thought badly thought of the culture she came from, etc. Stopping at that does not account for what I see as a more insidious and corrosive matter. In this day and age, and in this forum (of supposedly literate, informed people who ought to know better), we have a frequent poster retelling that "joke" as if that Tamil man's conduct was something to be emulated (in the context of this thread). It does not draw the objections and outrage one would expect. Instead we have silence, tacit approval, and one worthy even questioning whether the person that expresses outrage is over-reacting! To top it all, we have another (and I presume Varsha is a woman), instead of vociferously objecting, attempting to humor the KV Chellapas of the world by pointing out donkeys are admirable, worthy, intelligent, etc!!!
The "joke" and the joker who posted it and those that support and enable jokers like him (through their silence or active support) only serves to confirm the misogyny, lack of respect for women, condescension and latent bigotry toward other cultures and traditions (evident in supercilious and snide remarks, put downs, etc) that is all too present and visible in the very community and culture KV Chellappa and his enablers belong to and originate from.
Why are we tolerating and accepting this condescension and bigotry, usually directed toward those absent or less present in this forum (women, other cultures and traditions, etc)? I noticed on at least two occasions the moderator actively enabling, boosting a sick joker's self-esteem. Why are we accepting from "familiar" faces what we wouldn't (and shouldn't) from others? what place have they in this music-and-arts-oriented forum?
KV Chellappa, you did well to apologize and request your "joke" be deleted. Time will tell whether this was your last and whether you (and some others here on rasikas.org) become aware of certain "beliefs", "traditions", etc you (and your cohorts) espouse that have, to put it simply, no place in civilized society.
Nothing more to add and I endorse Mahavishnu's attempt to redirect this back to the thread

A comment from what appears to be a foreigner on a 'pedestrian' perform, in FB from Jayanth, an upcoming and well appreciated flautist:
"Dianna Oles

Speechless listening to Sanjay Subramanyam tonight at the annual Chennai Music Festival. My friend invited me to hear his Guru perform and wow...best performance. Standing ovation. His #alap is crazy wonderful. My first day back in Chennai was low-key all day but then stunning due to this evening performance. Looking forward to such amazing nightly musical performances. Fullness. Thanks Jayanth J A"

Please stop trying to correct the behaviour of fellow members yourself.satishsatish wrote:I noticed on at least two occasions the moderator actively enabling, boosting a sick joker's self-esteem.
This is not the right place to draw moderator (or public) attention to your complaints, regardless of their validity. I will be deleting your public complaints on the forum, if you find something wrong, please alert the admin by emailing admin [at] rasikas [dot] org
Better still, click the report icon (exclamation mark) that appears on a post to alert the moderators.

You can readily confirm I called out what the offending posters said and asked them to explain or account for it (and its relevance in this forum meant for music and the art enthusiasts). You are mistaken in interpreting my actions as "(my) trying to correct their behavior ...(myself)".
As for the "report icon": It's likely many others, like me, don't know about it and its purpose (to alert moderators). Maybe you want to make the icon and its purpose more visible.
Does it not seem wrong that a reprehensible "joke" associating women with donkeys was posted and remained on this website? that nobody complained or expressed outrage? and the moderator did and has done nothing to address the issues raised? what is one to make of your silence on that even as you lecture me on how to use the report icon?
As for the moderator: I did (in other instances too) ask for the moderator to step in only to see him whitewash, excuse offenses and even cajole and coax the offenders to continue to post, and make it seem as if I was at fault for complaining. The moderator was eager, quick to excuse those familiar to him while getting agitated over those that speak out. That sure boosted my confidence in the moderator, as it would have your's too if you were in my shoes.
You likely are unaware of the creeping bigotry, misogyny, and such in the General Discussions forum of rasikas.org and that your moderator's inability or disinterest to root them out. Your threat to delete my complaints, after your moderator fails to address them, isn't likely to make the real problem you have at rasikas.org--that of your members (men) referring to women as donkeys, prescriptions on how "uppity up, filthy rich, Marxist" musicians who take a position ought to be behave, "we Indians don't eat meat", "chew meat eschew Thyararaja", etc--go away. To the contrary it would confirm you (and the moderator) too condone, even endorse, such behavior and opinions and members who work in their fascist aspirations and political leanings into this forum meant for music and the arts...and don't be surprised if you and the moderator are called to account by any number of other entities downstream.

Re: Sangita Kalanidhi 2015
satish, as regards the issue you raised against my posts - I would say this.. It is T.M Krishna that is leading the way - that as an artist he cannot just be focussed on his art , but also look at the surroundings and issues beyond the art. I don't think that is a privilege only for the artistes , Rasikas also can have that. There is material on youtube that is consistent with his statement above e.g his speech at the Manthan at Hyderabad - which in fact I did not listen to when I posted my comments that you objected to.
And when I post here - I am not trying to converse with the artiste in question but rather with forum members at large - so the debate is internal within forum members as they read both. So if the tone sounds like prescription to the artiste I cannot help it.

Satish Satish,
There are many women who are known to speak their minds on Rasikas.org, and none of us were offended!
The problem lies in literally translating the adage!
The saying merely means--those who are not initiated into an experience (CM here), do not know its worth. kaRpUram=CM. kazhudai= a donkey, man, woman (no big deal) who has no clue about CM. That's all
