The girl and the boy ( not a "man") behind the father are the eldest of the family of 7 children
the black object is not a panai and it is a fairly good representation. clue: it is made of iron and is an accessory to the "aduppu'
clue to the direction; Note the firewood.

Arasi: correct. The kumutti uses charcoal as fuel so called kari kumutti.
you have added the audio to the picture which has thereby come to life
The aduppu in most traditional houses will be west facing so the the person who cooks is east facing. the direction of the logs indicates the east. the mother is facing east with a slight deviation of about 30 degrees,. The picture is culturally rich enough to a game of "I spy "
my LAST post on this
something preposterous.( may be my imagination !!): note the 2 ring like things lying on thefloor by the side of the sitting plank.
I think they are 2 spirals of kAnja ( dried) uppu nArathangAi urugai bits of which are given to prevent komattals.
May be we can send the extracts of the page to shri GOPULU and ask for his reaction !!

Re: Nostalgia . . . Mostly! ( in Tamil script)
To me it appears that the girl and "man" are either the daughter and s-i-l or son and d-i-l of the mama. My choice is son and d-i-l.
He cannot be s-i-l to be subdued by that intimidating giant.
She has to be the d-i-l. Look at her disapproving, glaring look.
(of course she has not taken the viLakkeNNai
That must me his "married" son; look at the thickness of his pooNool!
Now what about the contents of the chaTTi and vessal in the front?
Arasi
Superb and appropriate dialogue:
Let me add
girl (d-i-l) - enna paaDu paDuttaraar intha manuShan
son - appA, vENDamnA viTTuDungO!

kAinda nArthangAi pieces--good find!
Milk boiling, and what's in the kal chaTTi? dIpAvali marundu?
I still stick with the two being older kids. A daughter-in-law in a dAvaNi? She would be wearing the whole nine-yards. Expression more like that of a daughter and not a d-i-l(of yore, I mean!).
See how 'vigaDan' thAthA and pATTi almost look alike (cousins, of course).
The clothes the females wear stand out--such pleasing colors!
We have seen endless pictures of children with sparklers and so on in the dIpAvaLi malars, but this takes the cake (bitter lemon pickle)?
Norman Rockwell's illustrations in the Saturday Evening Post were so good that in some of his drawings, he brought out all the fine brush strokes and expressions of a classic painter.
Gopulu is the same here!

Not sure. Okay, I'll come down a notch and say--how about, a six yards sari, at least?
Oh, and see how they are only about half the size of the adults in the picture!

My wife & I were recently in N.E. to see the fall after a long time & VISITED various Norman Rockwell places where he lived & painted (including NYC!) & its amazing what a great artist he was. The new thing I learnt was Grandma Moses lived near him & was very close to him! VKV

VKV,
Didn't know that!
Grandma Moses is an inspiration, late bloomer as she was
Pasupathy,
Thanks, and could you please post a few of Rockwell's illustrations of expressive faces (of children, mainly) in every day scenes?

Pasupathy,
How many post-dIpAvali sparklers! Thanks a bundle! Interestingly, as with Gopulu's, the old pictures have dark hues to them, and the latter ones--how they shine! I love the details and the built-in thoughts in them (Discovery, for example). Each picture is a study in human expression and a visual lesson in the social modes of the times.
VKV,
I enjoyed your joke, but seriously, an organizer is no small fry. As for you, organizer, yes, but a volunteer, more so!
Yes, Grandma Moses is inspiring to us all in our golden years...

Vasan was a business-man...( There is business-blood in Gandhi too!) He did not like Kalki leaving Vikatan in the lurch.
Though Kalki told him that Thumilan is there to take care of magazine. Told Kalki not to go to prison. Kalki said no. Then Vasan asked him to tender resignation so that his name won't be associated with Vikatan when going to prison.
Kalki then said, "OK I'll resume job after serving time in prison".
To that Vasan, responded, slowly and deliberately, "We will see about that later".
Thus did Kalki severe his ties with Vikatan.

That was History!
And Kalki's best creations came after he left Vikatan!
But his Thyagabhumi (which was banned b the british Govt) was written whle he was at Vikatan!
That is ironical!

Yes, CML, you're right. A great turning point!
KaLvanin kAdhali (37-38) and TyagabUmi ( 38-39) were written while at Vikatan.
Vasan-Kalki interactions ...quite a story by itself. Inspite of many public arguments that arose between them, Vasan had great respect and affection for Kalki and vice versa Kalki, while criticizing few pictures of Gemini at first, was all praises for Chandralekha, Strange Bros and AvvaiyAr! ( see my earlier post..) Vasan republished Kalki's early writings for a year in Vikatan after Kalki's demise and in 1963, Vasan suddenly ..without announcements...brought out a Kalki Special Vikatan no. in Sept 63. It gave lots of chances to Gopulu (who was itching for it ) to sketch pictures for Kalki's article and caricatures of Kalki in Vikatan! Later on, of course, after Gopulu left Vikatan, he drew many pictures for Kalki-stories reproduced in Kalki Deepavali Malar-s! I wish Vikatan does something similar for Devan....

Perhaps you meant Devan ? When Gopulu joined Vikatan in 45, Kalki had already left. So Gopulu did not have any
notable interaction with Kalki . Though Devan was the Editor, Devan was more a close friend and guide to Gopulu.
Only after Gopulu left Vikatan (after 20 yrs) and subsequently left also the ad Agency he had started, he became a freelance artist and began to draw in the 70's for Kalki, Amudha Surabhi , Vikatan etc. At that time he had chance to draw pictures for Kalki's republished stories in DeepavaLi Malars.
Some of his memories about Devan and Silpi...I have noted in my Thennaattuc celvangkaL posts. Some other reminiscences about Devan...I hope to post when I get round to it.
As for his bio, it was pubished as a serial in Amudhasurabhi. Later published as a book by Kizhakku Publishers,
called " kOdugaLAl oru vAzkkai". It contains many interesting details about his life in Vikatan, mainly.

நேற்றைய நேர்த்தியை நீள்கதையால் போற்றினவன்;
கன்னிசிவ காமியைக் கண்முன்னே காட்டினவன்;
ஓயாமல் முத்தமிழை ஊக்குவித்த ஊழியன்;
'வண்டாடும் சோலை'யிலே 'மாலைப் பொழுதினிலே'

This reminds me of a Musical Tid-bit . Perhaps many here know it.Ponbhairavi wrote: உண்டேதி ராமுடு வண்டாடும் சோலைதனில்!
!
When Gandhi was assassinated , Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer was singing at Thiruvaiyaru Tyagaraja Utsavam. Do you know what he was singing at that fatal moment?
Yes, the above song of Tyagaraja...
The famous Manikkodi writer Chitti Sundararajan (who was with AIR..which was relaying Tyagaraja Utsavam at that time) has written this in his memoirs.

Pasupathy,
I did not know about the Maharajapuram coincidence.I am curious now to know about the meaning of the full song. But MSS,s niraval at padhathamaraigal nondhida is still ringing in my ears, particularly the soft way in which she will articulate the final nondhidaaaaa. today it sounds prophetic how the lotus footed one came searching for them (the singer and the composer) in this world in the peak of their glorious life.
CML: thanks

As I remember, Kalki composed this in the midst of 'Tamilisai" movement , in answer to criticisms that we do not have good Tamil songs with opportunities for singers to do neraval , swara etc and show off their capabilities.Ponbhairavi wrote:Pasupathy,

Same credit should be given to the Ragamalikai "maalaip pozhuthinile..".
That was featured in one of the DeepavaLi malar with Radha Vishvanathan (her adopted daughter)
posing the adavus...
MS was denied SK for a long time due to her championing Tamizh Isai.
Is there a documentaion (History) of the Tamizh Isai movement?

Thanks, CML.
I got a chance to read this poem in a Kaviyarangam on Dec 11 ( forgot the year) at Bharathi Memorial House, Triplicane itself..That was a thrilling experience. (Every year Vanavil Cultural Centre celebrates Bharathi Festival there.)

It is very nice and rhythmic to be sung as a Ragamalika!
Ask someone with good voice to sing and upload...

Re: Nostalgia . . . Mostly! ( in Tamil script)
Thanks for the suggestion, CML.
Actually, it was set to music and sung by a friend, R S Mani many yrs ago...but
the 'history' behind this form of poem is much more important , I think.
kandhuka = ball ( பந்து) . Sung during ball-games by ladies.
The above occurs in Silappathikaram... it is perhaps the earliest occurrence of of 'santham' in Tamil lit.
( My poem's structure just mimics it) Hence the structure is a very important one in Tamil poetic forms.
