A guru's heightened sense of humor can inspire a Sishya, but one has to be naturally endowed with a sense of humor as well to regale others.
To Cool's pathos, one can add a sense of philosophical resignation too, I guess...

One kalpanai with Nick ..

An auto driver takes Nick around chennai city when he came first to Chennai.

Auto drivers are always very excited to have foreigners with them as they will pay what is demanded.

The auto driver in his enthusiasm shows chennai around and he goes via mount road and then says "Idu Than Tallest bulding sir chennai la .. L I C "

Nick says "Oh I C"

Auto Driver says .."Idu O I C illa sir idu L I C"

Nick : !!!!!!!

I once had a patient who complained he was was hearing constantly a ringing sound in his ears. I mentioned that was 'tinnitus' and was not my department and sent him to an ENT. However the ENT told him that there was currently no treatment available. Finally he came back to me and asked whether I could adjust the shruti to one kaTTai whcih will be Ok for him to sing since the sound was high pitched.

Nick
I've had chronic lifelong tinnitus. Ever since I can remember, it has operated 24/7 (of course I am not conscious of it when asleep) and gets more pronounced when ambient noise is absent and/or when the air pressure increases a notch as in closed spaces underground, etc..

It hardly bothers me and I have a good sense of pitch :).

Ever since childhood I've played "games" with my tinnitus...like "willing" it to change tones, loudness, etc.., even disappear (except it comes back with a resounding cacophony).

I simply filter it out in my normal awareness but can focus on it if I want to.

One more thing, it gets really palpable when I plug my ears.

I have it too. When I first started noticing it (probably 15 years ago), I got really worried. I am not sure but it may have started after being exposed to some heavy construction noise going on near my office. But since then I learnt, its no big deal. But it is a strange thing - you never hear it unless you consciously pay attention to it. Hmm... this seems to crossover to another thread ;)

sometimes, people complain, "I need to get back home in time.. or else, "she" will shout in ettu kattai!" I think, they easily ascertain the pitch because, they suffer "tinnitus".

no wonder if someone in the states complain about this, since these countries are used to frozen food or and woven with packed food
(tin - nit - US)

people from thamizh nAdu are supposed to suffer this kind of ringing, as "senthamizh nAdenum pOdhinilE inba thEn vandhu pAyudhu kAdhinilE" = you have a bee inside which gives you honey!

when you have in-built knowledge of sruthi, then you can identify the pitch of conversations too... but, when you feel that the sruthi rings forever,

1. try getting used to ramjhi,
2. enjoy the pleasure of mind boggling graha bEdhams or
3. celebrate parenthood as you have karthik already!

:) :)

jb, indian ocean is L I C only.. (L I - ellai - boundary & c -sea).

one more regarding sea is about the problems we had in BOMBay recently... this was a picture I kept in my orkut profile...

CML,
While I thought of asking you for the ENT specialist's name, shame on me, those much younger to me on the forum came up with sage solutions for me in dealing with it.

Punarvasu,
Ayal is ArAydal. So, Ayalar means the same, I would think.

Actually what you suggest is being experimentally tried. Electronic implants which make 'anti noise' to cancel the internal noise is tried with limited success. However if there are any underlying pathology (such as high BP) that should be medically tackled before trying other methods. I recommend folks not to try 'ayurvedic/natural medicine' techniques since that may aggaravte the conditions and some may be quite dangerous.

Having said that listening to good CM is a pleasant option to blanket the 'head noise'. Going to sleep listening to good CM maybe pleasant and make one forget the noise in the ears. To my knowledge no clinical trials have been done in that area. But Tinnitus is a highly prevalent condition which one may learn to overcome over the years but it is 'hell' during the intervening period. A non-invasive CM solution (maybe a particular raga) is worth experimenting ....

'you never hear it unless you consciously pay attention to it' -- absolutely right.
Try extending this gradually further to all ills/problems of life. The result is amazing.
Tinnitians are better placed to be Vedantins. I am one.

I played for Mohan Santhanam today at Chakra Vinayakar temple, Moosa Street, T.Nagar. The hall had a back drop of Parvathi Kalyanam statues.

The rishi seems to be high tech and holding keys instead of japa mAlai (someone has converted his hand to a stand for office key!)and the wire going to the speaker(yellow box) via his shoulders looked like hands free or music from ipod!

This poor urban rishi has neither fresh air nor any access to those mountainous beauty spots that Uday has us all dreaming about. He is cursed to be--by some other rishi?--a key holder bound by wires--grin and bear it he does...

Don't feel left out with all the fling of tamizh words. Nagaraj's immense capacity for pun and creative fun overwhelms even those who can follow him. As much as I would like to translate them, the two mrudangists take pun to such an extent one can't catch up with it. Punarvasu can, I think!
Then again, you have poor me stranded there when you all go into the intricacies of drumming...

CMlover...

the way I read your Tamil there, it is just a couple of syllables short of fitting the metre of Hiawatha!

...Which is probably nothing like you meant it to be.

Anyway... enjoyed in translation :)

Nick,
How I wish I could write 'that' tamizh! Well, CML's poem is in sanskrit :)
I can get the drift, but punarvasu and others would appreciate is more because of their knowledge in sanskrit.
