Tanjavur S Kalyanaraman was one of the most creative and original musicians in recent times. A senior student of G N Balasubramaniam, Kalyanaraman displayed the same qualities as his gurus - incessant curiosity, a thoughtful and analytical bent of mind, and a penchant for seeking out the new in the old. In caraNam of Thyagaraja's song 'teliyalEru rAmanhakti mArgamu' Sri Santhanagopalan sang as 'nIDa munigi'. Many other musicians also do so. The correct word is 'nITa'. nITa means in water. nIDa means shade.

I am enclosing the full song, courtesy Sri. V.Govindan

teliya lEru rAma-dhEnuka

In the kRti ‘teliya lEru rAma bhakti mArgamu’ – rAga dhEnuka (tALa Adi) SrI tyAgarAja takes pity on those who go about their daily routine without understanding the true path ie., devotion.

Word-by-word Meaning

pallavi

O SrI rAma! People are not aware (teliya lEru) of the path (mArgamunu) of bhakti.

anupallavi

Roaming (tirugucunu) all over (antaTa) the Earth (ilanu) (ilanantaTa), they babble as if in a dream (kaluvarincEru);
but (kAni), O Lord SrI rAma! they are not aware of the path of bhakti.

caraNam

Getting up (lEci) early in the morning (vEga), taking bath (nITa munigi) (literally taking dip in water), smearing (pUsi) sacred ash (bhUti) on the body,
(performing japa by) counting (enci) fingers (vELLanu) (veLLanenci), and posing (veliki) (literally ostensibly) as praise-worthy (SlAghanIyulai),
they became (airE) totally (bAga) (literally very) committed (lOlulu) (literally dedicated) (lOlulairE) to earning (Arjana) money (paikamu) (paikamArjana), but (kAni)
O Lord praised (vinuta) by this tyAgarAja! they are not aware of the path of bhakti.

Notes –
Variations -
1 – kaluvarincEru – kaluvarincedaru.

Comments -
2 – vELLanenci – counting fingers (instead of rosary). Performing japa in a mechanical manner is meant.

3 – veliki – in telugu, there are two words ‘veliki’ (external) and ‘veligi’ (shining). In the present context, the word ‘veliki’ (external) is the appropriate word; therefore, the constant ‘ki’ should not be softened as ‘gi’.

Dear Mr Govindan
I came across the following explanation for the caraNa in the book Sri ThyAgarAja hrdayamu published by M.Adi & Co.
CharaNam starts as “ bAguga vittArjana lOlurairE gAni”. The meanings given in Telugu are translated as below by me subject to my limited knowledge.
Vitta – wealth
Arjana – earning
Alternate pAtam given is “bAgupaika mArjana”. The version you have given “bAgapaika mArjana” is how it is sung nowadays. I was given the meaning for this as below. The words are split as paikamu + Arjana.
paikamu -dakshaNa (cash offering to brAhmaNa)
Arjana – earning.

Narayana Iyengar was enchanted with the beauty, challenge and scope of the gottuvadyam and with his inherent talent and his total dedication, he soon mastered the instrument to such an extent that the instrument came to be prefixed to his name. The term “rakti” is used commonly to denote a manner of singing that is of a highly appreciated quality. It carries with it a sense of intense involvement or engagement. At a certain time in Carnatic music, when raga swaroopa was considered all important, ragas such as Saveri, Sahana, Natakurinji, Ritigaula, Dhanyasi were known as rakti ragas.

Of course, I was happy. It was from the CD: INIDE VANDARULVAN KANDAN sung by Sumitra Nitin, and it was played right after my friend Neela Ramgopal (who sings the songs in my second CD) singing Shyama Sastry's beautiful tamizh kruthi ennERamum in pUrvi kalyANi! Gosh! This sounds like shameless self-promotion "

Anyway, thanks to Sudhakar at Swati Soft Solutions (who issued the CD) for letting them play my song on air.

D K Jayaraman was a simple person and his music reflected his simplicity and straightforwardness. His technical competence was second to none, though he did not make it stand out in his music, but rather let the music speak.. His enthusiasm for and joy of life, and his emotional honesty reflected in his music and gave it a quality that unsurprisingly most music lovers could identify with.
