Here is one on Bharathi whose birth day falls on 11th December.

Arasiji

May I request you to write your poems in Tamil Script as it is proving to be difficult to read. It may be that you need some sort of software which produces tamil words when phonetically written in english.....here I am blabbering, I am sure you know what I am talking about! Regards

You can run it through a transliterator site, like this one from our own Arun:
http://arunk.freepgs.com/cmtranslit/editor.php

--------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do have a couple of concerns:
a) is it fair to non-Tamilians on the forum for us to be posting Tamil poems (in tamizh script)?
b) wouldn't the Languages section be a more appropriate forum for these poems?

Rajesh,
Point taken ;) However, in exchange for a number of reviews from you!

Sam,
Two reasons for my not resorting to tamizh script: we do not use tamizh script on the forum normally--and of course, my inability to do that with 'my' know-how in computerese!

r-t,
Thank you for your help! Arun's work is commendable--yet, certain letters don't work--for instance, vallavarAi comes out as vallavarAyi. saliyOm, chaliyOm??

PBala,
your line 'ottigai nittamum tEvai' brought about this poem! Yes, we will continue after the season.

Arasi,
Tamil letters 'r'-'R' and 'n'-nh' are difficult to distinguish. The transliterated version has to be manually edited.

In the link given in Post #61, you get a few options from which which can select the right word.
For example, when you type 'vallarai'; you get a few options from which you can select.
If you don't get what you want, experiment with other spelling, like using 'aa' instead of 'A'. Now, try vallaarai, and you get it!

Although the scheme has many "english phonetic friendly" constructs, the mei for "ya" is 'y" (as it payyan as opposed to paiyan) and so vallavarAy would get you what you want. I guess I couldadd a special clause for "i" at the end of a word and following a vowel to take it as the "y".

regarding sa/ca - you used Sa as in SirippOm which (uh-oh here we go again ;-)) is the brahman-accented 'sa/ca'. The reason it shows up (ironically) as the grantha sa (ஸ) is because the scheme uses the grantha sa with a number superscript of 2 to differentiate say Siva from sAvi (which would show up using the normal sa/ca i.e. ச ). However the number qualifier was not shown here and so it ended looking much much worse as ஸிரிப்போம். There are some new fonts which uses the true sanskrit grantha Sa letter (that we see in slokam books) but not all computers have them installed (support for this letter is still rare) and so it would be useless for the purposes of posting on a public forum where what each user sees depends on which fonts are installed on each of our computers.

Anyway for all 'Sa' if you use just 'sa' and you would get what you want. The translation editor has a built-in tool for replacing all Sa to sa.

Arun,
Nice to see you here and explain! Are you going to be in Chennai too?
Yes, that old thing again! Ha! I remember being reprimanded for writing 'to say' as cholla. Also was WAS TOLD it was a reflection of my hailing from the nellai area!
Also, when we were young, Sollu wasn't heard, no matter which community or area you came from. Media is to be blamed for the sound of s as in the english sun. The other thing which is even worse is the mindless transfer of na for Na and the other way round (vAnam as vANam and paNam as panam). Same with la and La (vaLam is valam and kAlam is kALam). It's dreadful to think that tamizh is fast losing its grip over correct spoken tamizh and as a result, over spelling too :(

I am sorry I find this generalization hard to believe. In my family, even my great-grandmom did not do Sa for everything. Add to that my grandmom, my aunt (much older than my dad), my mom (who is probably about your age or atleast close) - who IIRC did achieved something special in tamil in school/PUC.

Arun,
Sorry for about my ignorance on that. Yet, you cannot easily dismiss the other bit: la for La. la for La, Na for na and na for Na which I think became a habit after being exposed to mispronunciations on the TV and in films of recent times. Incidentally, I don't remember being subjected to this when listening to the radio in my days, though I'm sure a few didn't pronounce their words properly even then. This widespread thing can be illustrated by a personal experience. When I started coming to India to stay for a bit here, I was keen on watching the news and a few programs in tamizh. I realized how very different tamizh on the media sounded. When changes come gradually, we grow with it and don't notice it that much--as with everything else. But coming back to it after a lapse of time, dramatic as it may sound, does highlight the changes, that's all :(

yes La/la and Na/na confusion is on the rise. But IMO it cannot and should not be clubbed with Sa/sa usage. I have listened to paTTi manRams and vazhakkADu manRams when I was growing up where the tamizh literary knowledge was quite high, and many if not all of the speakers used "sa", and showed no confusion about La/la and Na/na (and of course got zha right - although may be not at the same %).

You hear "Sa" more when you see people like Velukkudi (whose tamizh is quite impressive but does have an extremely liberal sprinkling of sanskrit words) - in fact when you hear on podhigai/jaya scholars/priests talk about religious matters (e.g. temple history and mythology) you get that kind of tamizh - high flowing, Sa everywhere AND sanskrit (or sanskritized) phrases everywhere :-)

But the surprising and discouraging thing about Na/na confusion is it is SO mainstream that it is actually there is tamil film songs sung by tamil singers, and some of them music directors :-) - for example niNaivugaL(one na wrong, la wrong) for ninaivugal, maNam for manam (although it isnt quite Na, but closer to it than na).

Of course, you may think that makes it like the Sa/sa :D

Arun

PS: I will be in Chennai but not for the meet unfortunately. Family matters dictated my schedule and made me change plans. I will be there just for a week in the last week of December.

Yes. Not many are aware of this 'Tamil' letter! When transliterating Sanskrit, I get support only from a few font sets.

Curiously, the popular Tamil compound letter 'Sri' is based on this letter!

My kavithai on honoring Shri V.Govindan.

I was referring to the festive feeding of All during the Pongal festival. Nobody is left out. The motto is 'Let there be no more beggars; let there be no more starvation' since we have a plentiful harvest. I was also thinking of Bharathy's words

I was also referring to cooking the rice in the cocoanut water which is practised in Mexico. Is it done in TN?
