Watching this dance on DD makes me wonder if Samyukta Panigrahi was dancing in the skies for the Gods !!!!
By and large , Stage decors in Kerala are the most tasteful . Going by so many tv programs watched . They make great use of BW and pastel shades . Chennai stages are the most garish . Like the colors of the houses that bash your senses as the train chugs out of Madras Central - Brown ,pink , green aaaargh!!!

My cousin was so taken by her performance that he named his daughter Samjukta. He wanted to name his son Kelucharan, but his wife just refused

A simple, no distraction Backdrop - gets the focus and attention only on the singer and those on stage - as it should be.

I just read this obituary of Rohini Bhate:

Would you by chance know the name of the dancer who begins in the middle in the first clip you posted, please?
Thanks!

Rsachi, I am so excited that at least one person watched the links I posted - if you mean the outstanding dancer, shorter lady third from the left - there's four - she is the exceedingly graceful and very lovely Sharvari Jamenis and an outstanding dancer - she runs her own school in Pune now. I misattributed her in that post referring to Rohini Bhate, her guru who was also a great and lovely dancer. Rohini Bhate's school was called Nrityabharati and Sharvari in that clip catches your attention right away, she is the epitome of womanly apsara type grace. Watch the second hour long link too, you'll be mesmerized.
If you mean Sharvari..here she is
http://spicmacay.com/articles/su -sharvari-jamenis
There's a beautiful and exclusive docu on Rohini Bhate - her life was hard and she was never recognized by the government for any of her contributions which was immense as a dancer-teacher-scholar who trained in bharatnatyam first and then switched to Kathak. She was also well-versed in music having learnt from the legendary Vasantrao Deshpande. I posted that docu link long time ago in the Dance section but not one person said anything, not even a thank you!
This one sums Dr Rohini Bhate, as mentor of mentors.

A little tribute to Dr. Rohini Bhate on her death.

I rarely find this class in conception, presentation-delivery-performance, in other dance forms be it Bharatnatyam or Odissi or Mohiniattam with the exception of very very few artists in those forms and even then, this Kathak performance stands out as simply exceptional. Check the first piece in this link about 9 mins long - it is stunning choreography!

Rsachi, yes, in your video link she's part of Vasant Utsav in Pune and I would love to get to see her in person and know her. Divinely graceful people are born only once in a rare while, she's one of them. Have seen all videos of her on youtube - am simply drawn by her beauty and grace.

Re: CM Stage Decor
Smala,
First of all thanks for sharing the link.
Yes, the first item is beautiful, and it is outstanding from 5:15 to 7:15 or so, when Sharvari does some extremely beautiful movements.
This Ardhanarishwara Stotra was immortalised by Sanjukta Panigrahi, in the company of her husband Raghunath and Guru Kelucharanji.
I saw this first in 1970's.
There is also a DD video of this presentation ( maybe you can get it in Kalakendra also)
I have since seen two other lovely versions, one by Sujata Mohapatra ( d-in-l of Kelucharan and perhaps the best in Odissi today)
and also by Sururpa+Bijoyini of Nrityagram.
The Yaman raag singing in the present version is very well done too.
Depicting Shiva is always a terrible challenge in dance. One's conception is NEVER matched by the dancer, even someone very beautiful and graceful and manly. The best of course was Durga Lal.
Having said which I saw an INCREDIBLE performance of Ravana virachita Shiva Tandava stotra by Bijoyini recently. My hair is standing on end as I recall it.
Let me at least share a good musical version of the same stotra with you here:

Re: CM Stage Decor
Ms. Sharvari Jamenis is a beautiful kathaka indeed - her dancing is like a streak of lightning (very appropriate, since her name means 'night'!) - thank you smala for introducing her to me.
In the link that Sachi posted, in addition to the bol segments, she recites poetry to the accompnaiment of the tabla (I absolutely love when it's done so) - which is just how such poetry is to be heard - it evokes the majesty of mA bhavAnI effortlessly...and the dancing was just superb.
The ardhnArI piece as Sachi has said has been performed by many - and in all the ones I have seen, I have been absolutely sold on the lAsya/pArvati component, while the tANDava/Siva component is a bit of a harder sell - and it the same for this one as well. I do not think it is a fault of the choreography or the dancers.
I remember Smt. Samjukta's performance of this very well - The very name oDissi evokes lAsya for me - and all Smt. Samjukta had to do was assume the tribhangi and lAsya/grace appeared on stage. Despite the masculine majesty of Sri Raghunath's voice, the Siva component of her ardhanAri was not my favorite.
I would love to see an ultra-masculine (oDissi) dancer like Ramli Ibrahim tackle the tANDava.
In all the episodes of the series 'When the Gods Dance', there is a Siva/pAravti dance segment at the close when the credits flash by, by the husband and wife duo of Smt. Gayatri and Sri Balagurunathan - one the best I have seen.

Re: CM Stage Decor
Thank you, rshankar, I am very happy to share Sharvari Jamenis's few links from youtube again (I shared them on the Natya thread a long time ago). Your comments, as always, are very welcome and provides added interest to this mini-discussion within CM Stage Decor
Hope Arasi doesn't feel we hijacked the thread.
Rsachi and rshankar, in response to your views on Sharvari's Ardhanariswar performance :
I thought in the Ardhanariswar dance the portrayal of how Shiva and Parvati interacted was very well done. I don't have Samjukta's performance to compare or the other one Rsachi mentioned but I found Rohini's Bhate's depiction of Ardhanariswara's dance special for these reasons :
Parvati's feminine modesty, a measure of coyness in the meeting of her eyes with Shiva as she physically stood in embrace in some moments was very appealing. This was more than a dance of the twosome, not a competition between the two or even a challenge, rather it was presented as a romantic interlude, by Rohini Bhate. The brisk-natured, somewhat angular style in Shiva's Tandav was also portrayed by the taller dancer, in contrast to Parvati's feminine response. The coordination between the two as point and counterpoint and really as two halves to one whole, was also something that worked for me. Very often, in dances like this two dancers may end up looking disjointed and separate in their performance so when the dance is seamless in its togetherness, complimenting each other and picking up smoothly where the other left off, that is indicative of excellent choreography.

smala,
Good to see your smiles
No. This thread which I started months ago is not of great import. The posts so far have much to offer--and I'm still recovering from my very busy year and an indulgence of a season, way beyond my store in the energy bank
Ravi and his passion for dance brings to us beautiful comments and reviews.
Ah, and to boot, there are no flaring tempers and bickering so far!

IyengArvAL a bit grim here, KVN sports his customary serious look and I see M.A. Narasimhachar too...
Who are the accompanists in both pictures?
Ahem, staying with the title of the thread, those inevitable tubular glass hand-made pelmets at the threshold of many a household in those days...

Varsha Lovely Photograph. Pl send me one to my E mail Id [email protected]. KVN must be in his early 30's.
Arasi he must have been fearful of his guru. Pose kudatha ethavudu ninecheparo nu ( If he poses for the photo Guru might ask him!!!). I have gone with him to his Guru's house once. He talked to him covering his mouth with his palm. Iyengarval was swinging in the Oonajal in Royal style.

KNV,
I read in Mr. S. Krishnamurthy's book (grandson of Vasudevachar) that when ARI was visiting Mysore and spending hours sitting and talking music with MV, KVN would stand deferentially and NOT move from the spot.
So much for 'Bhaya Bhakti' as we say in Kannada.

'Bhavyam'. Your father was an epitome of it. I had seen him several times in the company of his guru--well, within earshot of his guru, but being almost invisible!
Ari made an impression on anyone even off stage, though he did not have the physical stature of HMB or Maharajapuram. I remember well B.Rajam Iyer's srImantham where Ari lorded over the feast in the naDuk kUDam (atrium). We children ate with him in the first batch. He was always fun to watch, on and off stage.
