I went through the number of instances where Chembai has proved his boldness for getting due respect for his fellow accompanists. Would anyone have any such remembrances regarding M.S and Co., afterall a lot of her concerts money have gone as donations to various charitable institutions.

THIS IS WHAT I HAVE READ SOMEWHERE:
Smt. MSS and Sri Sadasivam always ensured that the accompanying artists were always well taken care of. They were 'mAmA and mAmI' to them. There is an episode with the government of Madhya Pradesh, I think, when the Sadsivam's discovered that they were put up in accomodations that were much better than that provided for the accompanying artists. Sri Sadasivam protested, but was told that there were no rooms available at the place they were staying at. So, Sri Sadasivam asked everyone to packup and left for the station. The secretary of the organizing govt official found out aboout this and ran to station and pleaded with Sri Sadasivam to return. He agreed only after rooms were mysteriously 'found' for everyone at the best hotel.

What a respect M.S. and Co. shared among them. I think this due respect made them shine in all their endeavor. Truly great!

Smt M.S & Sri T.S were also very affectionate and concerned abt common ppl. there is an instance that my mama related to me:
once when my mama went to meet M.S at Kalki Gardens, many years ago, Sadasivam mama was not present as he had gone out concerning some work. when my mama went in, M.S was alone, with the servants. she then offered to make coffee for my mama with her own hands!! the greater surprise was to follow. my mama had gone to Amma's house in auto, and had told the driver to wait, as he did not expect to sit long. when Amma had enquired as to how my mama had reached, she immediately told him to call the auto driver and made some hot and delicious dosais for my mama and the driver!!!! imagine that!!! what magnanimity, what selflessness!!!! after that she sang with the Tambura for both of them for abt an hour!!! the driver was so overwhelmed with emotions that he prostrated at Amma's feet, tears streaming down his face!! on return he did not charge my mama anything, he refused to take any payment saying that this heavenly experience that my mama had given him, would remain with him forever, and that accepting money was out of the question!!! :D
truly, we r blessed that this Punya Atma walked amongst us!!!! :)

Navaneet, I looked at the photo albums at the yahoo group. There are some pictures of MSS laughing freely and quite charmingly which I have not seen before. Seeing all those pictures from her young age, through her entire career and to her last rites brought tears to my eyes....

Ditto what Meena said.. Nice write up on MSS.

Navaneet, one little bit of item you can add to your write up is somthing I picked up from the talk given by Sriram that MSS and her mother stayed with Veena Dhanammal when they first came to Madras. ( Ref: starting around 24:52 in the audio link http://ia300239.us.archive.org/2/items/ ... ras_8k.wma )

Statue for MSS:

The report also included this statement:

"The royalty raised through the sales of these albums is said to have amounted to about Rs.15 crores, which M.S. had donated to TTD for poor feeding and other welfare programmes. As a gesture of gratitude, TUDA and TTD, joined hands to honour this artiste with a statue."

So, I guess this makes the 'Smt. MSS/Sri Sadasivam' couple the single largest 'individual' donors to the TTD....

Another first by Smt MSS:
Subramania Bharati's compositions were first danced to on the stage by Anandi Krishnamurthy and Radha Sadasivam when they danced to 'ADuvOmE, paLLu pADuvOmE'....the singer for these performances was none other than Smt MSS! - Info courtesy narthaki.com.

Meena asks for the recipe of 'not very deep fried' murukku and vaDai--she means: how is it possible NOT to deep fry murukku and vaDai? :) My guess is--he means just the murukku. Deep fried, yes, but not browned. It is called pachchai murukku. You remove the murukku from the oil before it browns. It is not cooked all the way (a bit raw--pachchai as in pachchai kAy kaRi=raw vegetables). These are to be consumed soon after they are cooked. They don't keep...

Meena,

For the "not deep fried" vadais, may I recommend the MTR "ready to eat" vadais. You can pull them out of the packet and microwave them. (Hardly any oil involved). :D

They taste all right but can't compare to the deep fried vadais , which in turn taste best when eaten with steaming hot sojji

I had a CD made on the Hamaracd.com site and got it delivered at home. Search for 'Melaragamalika' by M S Subbalakshmi in their search page.

Just FYI...Hamaracd.com is a Saregama site which allows one to create a customised CD by selecting from the large archive of recordings available with them. Very convenient and one can find recordings that are no longer easily available in the market.

I have been informed by my friend Mr Vasu Devan regarding renderings of MS -
I have been collecting her music for a long time and as I digitize my cassettes, I upload them to www.sangeethamshare.org/vasu/mss. If you are interested, you may peruse and download what you like.
Happy listening
