The SK carries an award of Rs 100,000 plus an additional Rs 200,000 as the MSS Award instituted by The Hindu, IIRC.

Nothing like the reported Rs 5,000,000 (value of a house) as the first prize for the Asianet Super Singer contest.

Hey, the tup-tup artist gets possibly his first six-figure fee for a concert!

Harimau,
:?: Let's suppose your given name were Harimau :) your grandmother called you babulu, your grandpa payalE (or whatever the equivalent word in the district you come from), which one would we all know you by? If you were a performing artiste, won't we refer to you as Harimau?

With Sanjay, that was the name they called him by at home, Subra at school and if I remember right, your'e are right, after all. He went by the name Subrahmanyan, until S.V. Krishnan billed the young artiste as Sanjay in his concert brochure, or referred to him as Sanjay Subrahmanyan on stage. Such forethought on his part, I would say . Otherwise, Sanjay would have been, another Subrahmanyan (Subramaniam, Subramanian) on stage :)

Congratulations to Sanjay. I first heard the news directly from him.... from his tweet.

kvchellappa's age distribution brings this into proper context. Though we tend to think of Sanjay as a young artist, he is not that young when compared to other greats when they got the award.

Congratulations again.

I did not know the history of the 'Sanjay' name. Thanks to you and Arasi, we are now well informed.

Harimau,
In my younger days (I am 75 now) I used to adore (still do) MMI’s music. One of my friends used to refer to his music with similar word(s). I used to be very sad. May I humbly request you to refrain from using such distasteful words? Yes, it hurts me deeply and surely many others. Please respect others feelings.

This whole business of naming kids Rahul, Sanjay, etc., riles me to no end.

Kids used to be given names like Raman, Krishnan, Narayanan, Ganapathi, etc., so that you are remembering and uttering God's name every time you called the kid. Wasn't it Ajamila who was saved by Vishnu's bodyguards from Yama's minions because he called out for his son 'Narayana' on his deathbed?

So who is Sanjay? Some flunky in the court of Dhritharashtra?

Abhishek! Yeah, I can imagine somebody being saved from Hell because he calls out 'Abhishek'! Even Allah hearing it as Abu Sheikh wouldn't help the man out!

You have got opinions on everything, don't you? :)

I am actually more troubled by the notion that all it takes is to utter such a name in the last second of your life, that too not even addressed to the God in earnest and devotion. Bad message to send to people. When as a kid I asked about this, the responses bordered on 'oh, it just shows the power of the name and how easy it is to reach heaven'. Did not make any sense then or now. At least have a weighted probability distribution associated with it. Saying the name without even intending to address God is better slightly than not saying it at all. The more times you say it, higher the probability and more earnest and devoted you are when you say it, even higher the probability. That would at least be a lesson both on spirituality and probability theory. :)

To stray, I read and liked this:
“A man who believes that simple faith alone is a perfect and acceptable passport to eternal bliss will take no pains to lead either a decent or useful life. He is at liberty to commit all the crimes known to his nature; he may murder, steal, rape, and lie with impunity, for his faith .. will save him from his well-deserved punishment; while a man of high ethical standards and immaculate moral principles, who spends his whole life in self-sacrifice for the progress of humanity is doomed to damnation, unless he believe! What a horrible doctrine ! What a blasphemous conception of the justice of God!”

"Subrahmanyan" is the spelling Sanjay uses; he has explained that his grandfather was particular that it should be close to the Samskritam word. Sanjay is a beautiful word and Sanjay was a fair-minded person in MB. Its etymological meaning also is quite sensible and auspicious.

Sanjay Subramanyan deserves the coveted award.
He has always expanded his musical presentation and did experiments but within the
lakshana and lakshaya of CM.
His contributions have made him stand ahead of many of his age.
Music Academy has not only awarded a person but its position regarding Carnatic Music forms-
the vintage, present presentation style and display of skill-sets.
All these are with Sangita Kalanidhi Sanjay Sunbramayan

Congratulations to Sanjay Subramanyan! I am happy for him, but I am sorely disappointed with how several senior artistes have not been given due consideration for this award. What is wrong with the decision making panel in the Academy?
There are several other musicians who should have been considered instead - L. Subramanian, Chitravina/vocal exponent Ravikiran, OST, Flute Shashank and Tavil Vidwan A.K.Pazhanivel.
Having one award for vocal/instrumental/percussion is first of all a big mistake. The value of the Sangeetha Kalanidhi award is debatable at this point.

That seems to be a critique of Christianity.

In Sanatana Dharma, even non-belief in God is acceptable.

Yes. I omitted that reference, but any belief like in the story of Ajamila or what is generally said that chanting the name of god will burn away the worst of sins appears to be in that league.

From Sanjay's blog:
"It is a very great honour to have been chosen as this year’s Sangeetha Kalanidhi awardee by the Music Academy, Chennai. I would like to thank all my gurus who taught me this wonderful art form, my parents, family and the Carnatic music community for supporting me. Thanks for all your good wishes. It has been so spontaneous and overwhelming from all quarters, that it will take a couple of weeks for me to put my feet on the ground. I am just floating in the air like Madurai Mani Iyer’s Thaaye yashoda! A special shout out to all the well wishers on Twitter & Facebook especially. I promise to continue to perform to the best of my abilities and I look forward to more exciting musical times ahead."

Why should you? He may be pioneering getting a broader canvas for the art with his initiatives. After all, the Carnatic world is often accused of a clique like mentality, what with the unholy nexus of MA and Hindu paper.

For some time, kalAnidhi had acquired a "bad portent" tag... someone said it was "kAla"nidhi since some awardees moved on soon after. I think we are happily over that thought now.

In 2013 after sudha was announced as sk designate , it took me four months to figure out the age of sudha till I bought the souvenir of MA where it was mentioned that sudha was born on 1957. Way back in 2013 many were arguing in forum then that sudha was way too young but actually she was 56(in 2013) , it is only sanjay who is way too young he is just 47(in 2015).

History repeats itself . semmangudi/musiri ...sanjay...gnb,mmi,mlv,bmk are all below 49 finishers .

I was thinking that musicicans like OST, Mannargudi easwaran , aruna sairam will surely get it and then Ravikiran/ Vijay/Sanjay generation will be touched .

Always easy to guess who is the SK for the next 8 years but who will get the next year is the only surprise. My thinking was indeed wrong though with the newspaper 4 part writeup i was kind of thinking sanjay may get closer.

You are wrong , singing in morning usually happens when musicians are respected and they lose a bit of commercial status in evening slots . I think last year sudha had quite crowd and I think sudha and sanjay (the young and younger sk)will continue to enjoy evening ticketed status.

This moment, SS (we too) should think of LGJ, Madurai somu, TS Kalyanaraman who were deprived of Kalanidhi. SS should dedicate this (alteast mAnasEEkamaga...) to them before taking this award.

Sudha Raghunathan after getting SK in 2013 was in the evening slot during Dec 2014.After getting SK one may not be in morning slot.In the evening slot the two concerts are combined such that one big crowd puller will be featured. As long as Sanjay has huge following,he will continue in the evening slot

MDR was overlooked whenever he was eligible labeling him as an artist from Kerala is not under consideration in the year so and so....
MDR made Chennai his home for his last 40 years, even then he was considered as artist from Kerala.
Palghat KVN mentioned that MDR should have got the award.

People don't like honesty.

Those people should stop reading this post here.

Till about 6 years back, Sanjay had no grip on thalam.

There was one concert at Bharath Sangeeth Utsav where he started a korvai, didn't come to edam, started it after a pause and didn't come to edam, and then in his third attempt landed on the right spot. He himself acknowledged that he had to do this because he could not finish the korvai at the right spot. All of this is documented in the video of the proceedings. But this wasn't the only instance. There were many occasions when his weak thalam was visible.

Definitely 12 years ago, I have heard him go off sruthi while singing. He slowly improved over the years.

Clearly, the message being sent by the Music Academy is: we will do what we want and you all just have to lump it.

About 5 years of reasonably good singing, within the limitations of one's voice, is all that is required to get Sangeetha Kalanidhi.

Were those the standards applied to persons like MMI, SSI, GNB, Musiri, Alathur Brothers, etc.?

Again, do not read this post if you have a cardiac condition.

N Ravikiran sings. Sanjay sings.

N Ravikiran composes songs and their music (over 750 compositions). Sanjay sings.

N Ravikiran plays the gottuvadhyam in addition to singing. Sanjay sings.

N Ravikiran digs up and popularises Oothukkadu's compositions. Sanjay sings lots of Tamil songs.

N Ravikiran demonstrated his musical prowess at age 3, identifying over 200 ragas at the Music Academy. Sanjay was finally able to work his feet into his shoes unassisted.

And I am to believe that the best candidate for SK this year actually got it?
