point taken, debate is not about singing unknown/not so popular carnatic ragas like jayanthasena, ravathi , ranjani or narayana gowlai, or vivadi ragas... the displeasure is about hindustani ragas like patdeep, jog etc...

suppose you are a graduate student majoring in Tamil & the question paper has a question in urdu for 25 marks out of hundred , you'll cry foul right ?
Its the same thing here. If the vocalist sings a maru behag etc.. for RTP , the violinist has all the right to put down his bow & not accompany since its not his subject matter.

Thanks, Varsha..
At first, I did not register the rAgA that well in my tired mind (SankarAbharaNam and kEdAra gauLa played in my ear). However, I settled down to the beautiful kruti and svarAs--what a treat!

Thanks Arasi
It must be a speciality of the Chittor school , I guess . Am willing to post more of CSP if there is interest. (in the appropriate thread ).
Listening to him , many cliched favourites of mine ( as a youngster ) have taken new dimensions now. The krithi , Pahimam Sree Rajarajeswari , for instance) .

Post # 50 quote KSJ-- "I have not even heard of any compositions other than Vinatha Sutha Vahana by the saint, and have not heard anyone elaborate that as a main piece - is this a crime? "
DKJ -vijay siva's guru used to sing this quite often (at times with alapana too) . Cue perhaps lies there.
MMI has also elaborated Jayanthasena ragam so well. (Academy 67 )

I remember watching the movie Jaws and a day later l had no memory of watching the movie.pattamaa wrote:Mahesh - the issue is that most of today's concert doesn't touch heart, while the the said is true for artists mentioned by harimau !
The analogy is like film songs, you hear concert, and next day you forget it on what was sung...
I know Jaws is considered the iconic movie of the 70s yet it made no lasting impression on me.
Same thing can be said about most of the concerts that one hears today.
One advantage is that I am not bored by the fact that I may have heard some of the same songs an hour earlier. Thus I can spend an entire day in December in various concerts!

There are at least two reasons why people object to strange ragas being taken up for RTP.MaheshS wrote: Seems like if they personally don't like the artist / raga it / they are not suitable .... What about Kaikavasi for Pallavi? Swami composed in it. Mohana Kalyani? NOOOOOOOOOO. HaramBaah humbug. I wish people look at carnatic music without restricting themselves to the Trinity.
One is that the ragas offer limited scope for elaboration.
The other is that this practice sidelines the major Carnatic ragas.
It is thus that we have the invasion of Karnaranjani, Sivaranjani and that atrocity called Misra Sivaranjani.
I can imagine the type of listener that you are.
You are the type that listens to the Sivaranjani thillana and applauds when the All India Radio signature tune is brought in.

Limited scope of elaboration => When we are reduced to 30 mins RTP's, why not Desh? Mohana Kalyani [ KSG's Ramam Bhaje pallavi with MSG comes to mind] or Ranjani or Hamir Kalyani.
This practice sidelines the major Carnatic ragas => Again, *most* of the concerts with the so called "little raga" pallavi, will have one of the major 5 ragas as the main. Rajesh made this point before as well.
And I am happy with what I listen to, but I understand what I like to what others do are different and I respect their choice!
What's wrong with Santhanam's Sivaranjani thillana by the way? Or Lalgudi's?
