Touching upon music (paN in tamizh) again, I was conversing with a friend about sAhityak kolai in film songs. How mispronunciation in speech has crept into singing too! 'punnagai'--such a nice word--is sung as puNNagai which does not make my response a punnagai. The word is contained in the starting line and is the refrain of the song. It hurts my sensibilities (manam puNNAnEn). Those few lines of a film song--can't one learn to sing it the right way as one learns to stay with the Sruti and tALam?

CML,
Well said--and those who cannot do a critique, perhaps criticize!

Which song is that arasi? I dont know about nowadays, but in the past (say 60s-70s and even early-mid 80s) I think film singers did a much better job with tamizh compared to cm singers ( :P - my pet peeve ). Nowadays you do have more imported singers.

Of course KJY early in is career had a lot of problems. TMS, SPB and PS I think did a very good job - even though it is not their native language (saurashtra for TMS, and telugu for others - right?). TMS was just excellent. There were always exceptions.

"achacho, let me stop right here" would be appropriate ;)

Why Achacho? it is more a polished term. Ayyayyo would be more real.

ganesh_mourthy: that is an oblique reference to a tamil film song that starts 'Achacho Punnagai'.

Finally, Vasanthakokilam let out the song that Arasi wants to be kept a secret/

But how coudl Arasi be olblivious of many of CM singing in a rolling accent.
My obeservation - The great king of yesteryear.......... Is that oblique enough, Vasanthakokilam?

That is the peNmaNi goes from peN-arasi to puN-arasi!

Arasi, no reference to you (after all you are 'nambarasi' - our Arasi!)....

Ravi, I am in this all-incorporating mode.. I now have to transform it to a different poem style ;)

puNNagaiyAl puNNAna

peNmaNiyE puN-maNiyE

manap-puNNAra manap-paNi maNai

pun-maNiyE pen-maNiyE

puNNiyam puNNinathAl punnagayO

Before someone admits me in a manap-paNi maNai, over and out!!

This thread ought to be a prime target for the webmaster's pruning scissors... posts starting from #40, right upto the last one (#65): utter drivel, most of it the contribution of the so-called moderators

Another moderator there, Rupavathi!
Mouse or not, this member here had to be chastised too. Otherwise, I would have a written a whole verse on 'vegu azhagium veguNDezhundAL'.
After a week of hard work, the weekends tend to draw out the droll in some of our members. To be honest, there is nothing like rotting cheese to make me go scurrying :) Moreover, even the 'not verse writing type' are staring to write. No harm in encouraging them. At the end, we also have to consider that these free spirits are the ones who do an awful lot of service (some of them behind the scene too) that keeps the forum going.
The administrator keeps an eye too, I presume :)

Sathej is going to the rue the day he chose the title of the thread and ragam-thalam for pointing it out ;) As Arasi said, it is all a bit of fun around an otherwise serious topic. Let us get back to the topic if it has not already concluded on its own volition.

Thankfully, the moderators allow fun, and even some drivel too. Even in the more arcane or academic subjects it has its place.

Of course, those who feel they have something more lofty to contribute may still do so ;)

I am here after a gap of abt 10-12 days, dint read all msgs. still-
- when a knowledgeable rasikA goes to a concert, spending his money and time, to enjoy the concert, and he knows what/how much
to expect from the artist, he has the right to point out to us his feelings/opinion
-good artists take that (they already knew the tech mistakes when performed) in right sense&ensure no mistakes in future.
-if the artists think they performed very well-no mistakes.. they can feel happy then, and abuse the rasikA directly or thru someone-
but in the days to come they will hv less rasikAs and then no sabhas to invite.
-comments are given by rasikAs based on a particular performance, taking into consideration the artists capacity.
-rasikAs are not expected to clap hands for everything. They are not followers of someolitical parties !
---
So we hereby request theartists to express their views here, in reply to rasikAs comments,

Bharath and Sathej
Reviewer earning the wrath of artists is not new. There has been an instance several years back of a reviewer seeking protection from police when an irate artist sent goondas after the reviewer. In the recent past, there were rumours of a musician refusing to commence his concert if a particular reviwer is present and yet another instance of a disciple vowing to take cudgels against a reviewer, if he writes anything about one's guru. A few years back, there has been an istance of a reviewer's credentials having been questioned by an artist who fianally found reason and apologised when the reviewer challenged the artist for hearing the recording in the presence of eminent musicians. Just as artists, the reviewers also are in public glare and their output also shall be questioned and they have to meet such challenges. It is sad, artists do not think that the review relates to the particular concert and is not a general assessment of their capabilities.
