We all know that there is much in the music world that is very far from divine, and that many of the musicians themselves are far from perfect. They are human; why should they be perfect?.

Nor only do musicians need to eat and house themselves, not to mention educate their children, they are entitled to all the material ambitions that many of the rest of us have too.

I recall an artist admitting that, as a youngster, he expected that carnatic musicians could only be good people, as they spend so much time singing about god. After the initial disillusionment he was able to laugh at his youthful naivete.

Indeed. Such are the many "necessary losses" of growing up.

Dear Pranathi,

I am not trying to berate musicians for their bargaining for their pay packages. The thing is it is like any other profession these days. Like an artiste trying to sell his paintings, or a firm tryng to sell its softwares. We dont call them divine.

Music is divine indeed but that does not mean that the artistes are divine especially when they have come to the concert platform. they toil and moil like in any other jobs and struggle for their livelihood. Here we shoudl try to appreciate the technical aspects of music like in western music instead of arguing its divinity, for our music to progress and reach the wider masses.
