The Haridasas, who propagated the philosophy (Vedanta) of Madhvacharya, belonged to two groups - the Dasakuta, who conveyed the philosophy of Madhvacharya in simple and lucid Kannada to the masses; and the Vyasakuta, who were required to be proficient in the Vedas and Upanishads.

The term 'pada' was initially used to denote any musical composition. During the time of Kshetragna, the padam evolved as a distinct genre with a nayaka-nayaki motif. Padams give equal importance to dhatu (music) and maathu (lyric). This feature presents some popular padams and padam composers.

Ankita Mudra is the signature or stamp of a composer. The vaggeyakara mudras of may composers are well known, like 'Tyagaraja', 'Guruguha', 'Shyamakrishna', 'Padmanabha', 'Purandara Vittala', 'Ramadasan', to name a few. Some composers however, are not easily identified, as they do not have many compositions, or they do not use their names directly in their songs.
