All good things come to an end :)
But great things go on forever...
I was hoping we would have a few more (at least 2-3) rounds...
Oh well, c'est la vie, I guess. :(

The source of the sAranga clip- rendered by a fabulous artiste- Neela Ramgopal from Bangalore:- someone who produces sovereign classical stuff. This in itself commands respect and admiration. What enhances this feeling is knowledge of the fact that she started quite late and fought against illness. I have not only heard her in concert several times, but also had the fortune to learn from her in a workshop. A very unassuming and friendly lady.

Her prowess comes out in the AlApane here- the sAranga holds forth within the fist few seconds- thats what I put up for the quiz.

Thanks DRs,
Nice combination of flute, mandolin.

I once could not identify Lalgudi's varnam in sAma, since then learnt this rAga.

VK, that's ok - it was to be just that one question. (I am no DRS!)

I agree, that percussion page is really great.

Sorry for raking this up really LATE... :( but I thought this is worth discussing...

In the second audio round, two of the nishadam clips match with Kalyani and Surati prayogams.

1) Can someone explain/demonstrate how n3 in kalyAni is different from the same in, say, pAvani (41), dharmavati (59) or kosalam (71)?

2) --do-- with n2's in Surati and rItigauLa?

Looking at the number of sympathetic strings, it looks like Veena to me. But this was of playing was in 18th -19th century...

(Ah!, should have covered the face or the veena for the quiz)

This picture is from 1934. The caption reads- Ravishankar playing the Saraswati veena.

This audio clip (just 4-5 seconds) from another thread can form a great quiz question. Identify the raga.

That is an anachronism. That is little 'sudha'. It took a lot more years to become 'sudha raghunathan' :)
Did you know that MLV looked exactly the same when she was a baby!
