Is it வஞ்சப்புகழ்ச்சி?
or

the translation has poetic accents indeed but it introduces several concepts not found in the original. such micro level translations of excerpts have the inherent danger of distorting the picturization of characters particularly in an allegoric or symbolic story where these very characters undergo metamorphosis with evolving situations.

These lines clearly portray the musicians who present songs of other languages without knowing the meaning. Tyagaraja kritis, Abhangs, Meera Bhajans, etc can be presented by the musicians with more involvement if they are familiar with their meaning.

But things are changing. It is heartening to note that the younger generation musicians are well aware of this, and are very particular about knowing the meaning of the songs. Hopefully, after a decade or two the above lines would be out of date!

Actually music is based on 'notes' which is language-free. When there are wonderful emotive/meanigful lyrics in Tamil why go for unfamiliar languages. Music is as much for the mind as it is for the soul..

The mention of the song "pani vizhum.." stirred my nostalgia so much so that I started thinking about the first time I heard this song. This is from the film 'NinaivellAm Nithya' by veteran Sridhar. This film got released in JUne-July'82 and we saw this @ Nagercoil when we had gone on a trip to K'kumari. So,I put myself in a time machine and traveled back to 1982 where during our visit to vivEkAnanda rock in boat saw a beautiful girl who was our co-traveler.I stll remeber her face and I really cherish those few moments spent and the poetry now for the tune of 'pani vizhum...';Iam no match to vairamuthu still I have tried to write these lines to go in tune with the tune of the song.

Here is an interesting anecdote about" Asu kavi " ( a poet who sings on any topic given) Kalamegam :
He was asked to make a poem about an useless thing viz an inflexible ,stone- like bow tied with a worn out chord. he was given the first line below and asked to complete:

நாண் என்றால் நைந்திருக்கும், நற் சாபம் கற்சாபம் ( சாபம் =வில், bow)
here we can see the output of his ingenious mind:

நாண் என்றால் நஞ்சிருக்கும் நற்சாபம் கற்சாபம்
பாணம்தான் மண் தின்ற பாணமே- தாணுவே
சீர் ஆரூர் வாழும் சிவனே! அ(௦ஹ்)௦து எப்படி
நேர் ஆரூர் செற்ற நிலை ?
பாணம் = arrow
மண் தின்ற பாணமே eaten by earth=one who has eaten earth referring to krishna's childhood deed same expression for active and passive voice in tamil- Lord Vishnu was the arrow of Sivan, meru parvatham was his bow and the snake venemous vasuki his chord.ஆரூர் செற்ற= won over the enemies( ref to திரிபுரம் எரித்தது

I am leaving this as a puzzle for you scholars to figure out the meaning and the 'allusions'.
If you give up I will provide the explanations!

My guess is that it refers to Sri Rama breaking the Siva dhanus( கை வண்ணம் ) and also delivering Ahalya from the சாபம் of having become கல் ( முனி நாண் )- கால் வண்ணம் as kamban says. The 2 meanings of கற்சாபம் have been nicely exploited.
Who is the author of this poem? CML himself? Then we have another ஆசுகவி in our midst

Could the last two lines also refer to the episode of Rama stringing/ breaking the vishnu-dhanus of Parasurama? Muni could refer to Parasurama, Rama's 'kaivaNmai' is instrumental in stinging of the bow, and "muni nANa" may refer to Parasurama ending his campaign against kshatriyas and returning to mahendra giri after this encounter with Rama. Was the Vishnu-dhanus also made of stone (kaRcApam)? CML can let us know.

Yes it is mine though I don't deserve to be a 'ASu kavi'. However in my younger days I had a phenomenal photographic memory and math skills (I could multiply 6x6 digits in a trice); all of which have evaporated now since age has taken its toll. My evening in life is spent enjoying/encouraging the skills of others and the beauty of our great poets (Sanskrit and Tamil) and immersing myself in the nectar of CM...

Both of you are right and on target:
I interpreted the first line
நாணென்றால் நைந்திருக்கும், நற் சாபம் கற்சாபம்
as a statement by Parashurama ridiculing Rama claiming that he broke the Siva's bow since through age its strings (நாண்) had deteriorated ( நைந்திருக்கும்) and the only good bow (நற் சாபம்) is made of stone (கற்சாபம்).
Then I decided to address Siva paying a compliment to Narayana (since KaaLamegam had chosen to praise Siva in his verse).
As sridhar_rang points out முனி நாண legitimately belongs to Parashurama since he was put to shame. Attributing it to Gautama (claiming that Rama put him to shame by reversing his spell) is not so efficient, but the play on words is there. I chose to interpret கற்சாபம் punning on the word சாபம் (curse)...

Though Siva used the Meru giri as his bow (கற்சாபம்) in the Tripura episode I have no information as to the composition of shaarngam (ViShnu's bow).

A super verse...
That it also applied to GautamA was perhaps my own interpretation, I thought--because of my gender ;)

Now, don't crawl under a pAshANam. While self-glory is pAshANam, disowning your talent and seeking refuge under a pAshANam isn't good either, I've been told, by guess who ;)
