His humorous side comes out in his lec-dems and in conversation so unobtrusively that you are taken by surprise. When you catch on to it and laugh, his talk or conversation continues in an even flow. There is no effort on his part to crack a joke. His sense of humor is just as natural to him as his singing, I think. The pauses are meaningful in his delivery, but the timing is not contrived...

bilahari, i saw your post in "thodi phrases"

i think, rakthi phrases are nothing but the opposite of "thikra" phrases... :)

names like rasika911 may fuel some members to think of id-s like visa(raNai)197, hurry(ambulance)103...

bilahari, what is your opinion in changing my name to erode100? :D

I don't know if this one has been mentioned yet...

Santhanam in a concert, and a fantastic one at that with Hindolam (Manasuloni Marmamulu), Sankarabharanam (Sankaracharyam), Thodi (Bharati Mamava) and RTP in Lathangi.. towards the end a hayseed pops up and asks for "Ranganathudey". Santhanam immediately begins it and says "Kaccheri marubadiyum aarambham".

All this reminds us that good humor, as in all other venues, has a place on the classical concert stage too. If comedians can sing, musicians can be humorous too--so long as their humor is as good as their music.

I don't remember whether I have already posted this...

Last year, I was explaining the varieties of 16 to my sishya.

"Adhi thALam can be divided into two parts, 4 each...
so, there will be four 4s in two cycles, that is 16 beats... or you can do two 8s too...ok? but four 4s will be longer... you know?

"both seem to be same sir.. but, I don't know..."

"yes, four 4s are longer and two 8s are shorter"

"how come.. sir.."

"four 4s means, nAlu naal Agum... two 8s? reNdE ettu dhaan..."

This sounds a bit like the situation with the common cold and over-the-counter (OTC) remedies - "If you use the OTCs, you feel better in just a week, but if you don't, you suffer for a full seven days"! :P

After a great session in the morning, my friend asked me what is the big deal in artistes of the south and north sharing a stage, when already marriages happen beyond territories.

I said, "a good question... that's why they go by a single term"

"single term?"

"yes, when 'balE - bEsh' and 'kyA bAth hai' happen it is 'khan-jugalbandhi...' and when 'appadi pOdu' and 'teek hai' meet, it is 'conjugal-bhandhi...' you know, that is supposed to be a perfect term to translate wed-lock too!"

The singer pinched himself and I asked why.

"Just to make sure, whether I am alive, after listening to all these...." :P he paused for a while and added "well... I think, therefore I am..."

"ha ha... let me check too... mm... you are confused, therefore I am.."

:) :)

dear cml, paththula aaRu pOnA, it is vEshti....

Got it! That is the thread size; language used by the 'neytthu thozhilaaLar' (weaving community)!
Our standard answer is 'uDaippu' (flooding)!
(since 'patthu' is the jargon used to denote the paddy fields and 'aaRu' is river :)

Here is a poignant story on the life of SS.
He was deeply grieved when his wife passed away. When somebody enquired about it on the sixth day he cryptically replied:
shaaka anjinaaL
chetthu aaRinaaL

On the face of it the two lines would mean 'She was afraid of dying. By dying she attained peace'.
On the other hand the devi upaasaka that he was, he wass conveying the message of the future. The lines mean
' To die (for me) it is now five days (left)
This is the sixth day of her death'
Precisely on the eleventh day after his wife's death SS attained nivaaNa!

That is a very moving incident..

Not to deviate, But I want to mention this incident in a small local kutcheri in coimbatore, where I grew up. Essentially, Mamis , all decked up with Pattu sarees, and the quintessential 'bun' with malligai poo, MSS Style, with diamond earings and mukuthis, were taking lead.It was for Rama navami, in Ramar koil, in Ram nagar. Two Mamis started arguing , because one mami wanted to sing 'Pandureethi' versus 'Bantureethi'. Mammi with pandureethi was gifted with a mighty voice, and capacity to pierce you with 'mai' filled piercing eyes, and to add to that a generous height and weight. 'Bantureethi ' mammi had to meekly give in..
It was funny !!!!

I am sure Coolkarni (and others over 40) will find this useful! Highly recommended for musicians and rasikas alike.

SIMPLE, SAFE FITNESS PROGRAM FOR THOSE OVER 40

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5 kg potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides, and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.

After a couple of weeks, move up to 10 kg potato sacks.

Then try 50 kg potato sacks, and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100 kg potato sack in each hand, and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.)

...READ ON...

Once you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each sack.

OMG!
If you are over 60 don't you ever try the way R-T is recommending! Especially 100KG in each extended hand!! He must have taken lessons from ATLAS :)
You are sure to burst an artery/get a slipped disc/or a cardiac failure!

Moderate weight lifting is good to maintain/improve muscle tone. But abnormal weight lifting will damage the tendons and cause irreparable damage! It is safer to use 'resistance-bands' to train the muscles.

Safest to take a brisk walk every day if you are over 60.

Avoid 'potatoes' (especially the Fries) at all costs!
(This is not a joke!)
