Oh-oh, seems people missed the joke in that one...
Please re-read the instructions.

Especially the last line!

r_t,
A 'sock it to me' sack joke!

Keerthi, The docs may agree with me. Potatoes in moderation are nutritive, so long as they are not served steeped/ fried in oil or slathered with cream cheese. A baked potato is delicious and nutritious. So too a sweet potato.

Agreed.. Operative word being moderation... My father sings high praises of an sweet potato roasted over the bathroom 'AnDA' embers, till it splits its skin; eaten unseasoned...

It is remarkable how all these foreign fruit and sabzi-s have been incorporated so well into indian cuisine.. potato, sweet potato, chillies, capsicum, tomatoes, tuvaR-dAl...

Yes. You may have to convince some folks though that they truly came from abroad over the years :)
VKR speaks of oatmeal with tayir (yogurt). I have to try that! I eat mine with milk.

Sweet potato is considered much better - it's even recommended for diabetics, while potato is a big no-no.

In one conference our great politician went in which many of our educated giants were also taking part. The waiter came around asking for cool drinks. The Politician was conversing in hindi with one of the educated person. When the waiter requested the educated person first : "Sir do u want Lime Juice ? He said "Yes". Waiter asked "With sugar or salt". He said "Sugar" and the waiter left.

This the politician was watching and wanted to use the same type of conversation in English whent he waiter came for the next round.

He said "Waiter I want lime juice"

The Waiter Said "With Pleasure sir"

Politician hurriedly said "No No With sugar only"

Nothing new - now if you find a way of ensuring the patients follow this advise, then it is worth passing on to all and sundry, not just physicians....

Oatmeal can be used not only with thayir, one can make pongal too replacing rice. In fact Swami Shantananda of Chinmaya Mission is very fond of the oatmeal made pongal.

Hello Docs, the common problem among the carbo-gobbling Indians is the high triglyceride. The doctors usually ask them to cut down on carb. Indians in turn ask 'substitute it with what' since most of their diet is carb. There is usually not a good answer. Do curdoatmeal and pongaloatmeal do any good in that regard?

Less than 30% of the total calories should come from fats. Hence reduce fat intake which is very rich in SI foods. Body weight must be reduced. Again one should cut down on high carb diets and substitute 'complex' carbs like bread, rice OK, and cereals. Avoid sugar/honey/candies and especially Mysore Paks/Tinnevely Halvas/...

With glucose at 100, Oatmeal has a glycemic index of 48 which means it is quite Ok as a complex low carb!
(and with (low fat) thayir it is even better)

VK - switching from rice-based diets to a lower carb ones is tough, I agree. But it can be accomplished in steps - cream of wheat (cooked as rice, upmA etc), wheat (cappAti - the phulkA kind), whole grain bread (not white), oatmeal etc. are all good suggestions - but what is important is to be moderate - drink a glass of water before meals, eats loads of veggies (for example, a sambAr that is loaded with tAn), and reduce the amount of rice/rice substitute.

Here is a link to an article that gives the GIs of various Indian foods - http://www.rssdi.org/1997_july-sept/article2.pdf for some more ideas.

Thanks VKR, CML, Ravi. Ravi, that is a great document, highly relevant to us. Thanks. Most of the normal stuff we eat are indeed at the higher end. Idli and Dosa come out really bad. Pongal kicks butt and so does adai. I can live off of those two. I have a feeling aDai avial would be on the good side of the list too, may be even higher due to the veggies toned down by that curd.

Isn't it a folklore that fast digesting items are good for you.. that is so wrong..

The Fibre content of the food is quite important. The fibre retards fast absorption of the carbohydrate and helps slow digetion. It is advisable to add bran to the preparation of the SI foods (dosai/adai/..) which can be done without marring the taste!

Now a days we eat 'pala Aharam(many meals)' and not 'phala AhAram'. :)
Of course frequent small meals are recommended for diabetics rather than 2 large meals;
we end up having frequent large meals.

A few points while on the subject of nutrition:
1. While choosing between rice, wheat, etc. it's important to go for whole versions. Brown rice is much better than maida wheat. The general rule of thumb is "If it's white, it's poison" (applies to sugar, rice, maida, salt etc.) In Kerala you find large numbers eating brown/red/whole rice, while in TN the white version is the cultural choice ('malli poo rice').
2. A big myth that has spread around is that coconut is bad for you. There's lots of scientific evidence that coconut can actually be good for diabetics and heart patients, contrary to popular belief.
E.g. see here http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/
3. Talking about nutrition and CM artistes (this provides a nice link to this forum!), I've found that many of them keep such unhealthy habits, esp the regular late night dinners after concerts. Honestly I don't know how they maintain their health at all!

Doc: Just walk 5 kms a day in the morning and get back to me after a week.

A week later the doctor gets a call from the patient.

Pat: Doctor, thank you. Your advice really worked and I am very relaxed and energetic now.

Doc: Oh great. Come and meet me immediately , I will tell you a few more.

Pat: Immediately ? but I am 35 km away from my home
