My Uncle was singing Sabhapathiku veru dheivam in a concert once and the line 'Oru Dharam Sivachidambaram endru sonnal podhume' has a few sangathis. After he sang the sangathis, the mridangist whispered "Oru dharava sonnal porumnu naal anju dhadave sollitele". My Uncle couldn't control his laughter and had to explain to the audience what had transpired.

On the same song--although not as funny as Sripathi's:
In the anupallavi--"Kripa Nidhi ivarai pol" phrase-once Ariyakudi repeatedly pointed towards Palghat mani Iyer much to the embarrassment of PMI and delight of the audience.

Ariyakudisms:
Ariyakudi was always very inquisitive and informal and solicitous of others genuinely-once when two people were discussing something very heatedly,Ariyakudi interjected aand asked what was going on they told him it is nothing for you to which Ariyakudi replied" InDA Ariyakudiyum,Ariyakkudiya vishayangal irukkalame enru than Ketten!!

Another instance when GNB and Babu Sir(nee C.K.Venkatanarasimhan--Secy of the Music Academy in the fifties/sixties) who wre very good friends were having a very heated discussions inching towards personal invectives when Ariyakudi "pokes" his head in and asks "What is the commotion all about?--Not realising who asked the question GNB irritably says "Enagalukkul __-Aayiram Irukkum,ungalukku sambandame illai,neengal en thalai idarell" to which Ariyakkudi says:Adukkenna,500 500 Aaha Pangittukkalame enru dan ninaitthen!!.

Once a person not too knowlegeable about names of Tamil villages asked a scholarly but again not well-mannered person:
"ithu enna musicians ellaam ariyakkuDi, semmanguDi, kunnakkuDi.... nnu. kuDinna enna?
Reply came (perhaps waggishly); antha rahasiyam veLiyle SollappaDAthu :)

Gandhiji visited Bangalore in 1927, and he was staying at Nandi Hills, a hill station on the outskirts of Bangalore. They had arranged for T. Chowdaiah to pefrorm for him. Gandhiji did not know who Chowdaiah was, so he turned to T.P. Kailasam (a great Kannada playwright), who was standing next to him, and asked, "Kailasam, who is this young artist?".

Kailasam, whose wit was legendary, answered, "Bapuji, you are a great non-violinist. This Chowdaiah is a pucca violinist." Gandhiji laughed till his sides burst :)

While we're on the subject, it wouldn't be out of place to mention Kailasam's poem about Gandhiji (though this one would't strictly qualify as a humourous post). Nevertheless, here it is, the poem called THE RECIPE, by T.P. Kailasam, the great Kannada playwright:

THE RECIPE
-------------------
Into a bare handful of bones and skin
Pour just an ounce or so of flesh and blood;
Put in a heart loveful as Sea in flood;
Likewise a mind sea-deep and free from sin,
Fix on two jumboo ears,... two goo-goo eyes
Paint on a smile of babe at mother's breast,
Inclose a soul that caps Himavat's crest;
And speaks with tongue which honey's sweet defies;
The "stuffing"? Goat's milk, soya-beans and dates,
Now, cover to brim with suffering human's years;
And bake this dish in gaol for one score years
Take out and garnish it with pariah mates,
Wrap up in rag, prop up with lithe bamboo
And serve; The world Redeemer; Our Bapu.

And also the message of Bhagavad Gita

One more Kailsam story. Kailasam was in attendance at a marriage ceremony, and the Nagaswara artist's attempts at producing music had particularly jarring effect on the ears.

In the midst of this cacophony, Kailasam's friend asked him, "Isn't that Nata raga?", to which he replied, "You are correct. That is not a raga!" :)

Reminds me of the joke
When an old man liistening to the lovely singer asked 'Is it dharmavathi or hemavathi?'
The young man gawking at the singer remarked: 'It is neither, she is KalyaNi' :)

'tukkadaa priya' will be a good member name in our forum. Don't have to say a whole lot to establish his/her credentials in any discussions/fights regarding Aruna Sairam concert reviews :)

Now for the titles :

When a person sings badly we say in tamil : Cha kolai pannittar : so we can give Sangeetha Kola Nidhi

When a vocalist and one of the accompanists conspire to test the mettle of the other accompanist then we can give this title : Sangeetha Kala Sathi

When a person sings boringly we say in tamil that "Avar rambam maadiri arukkarar ya " and the appropriate title will be : Sangeetha Kala SAWrathy ....

hahahah having started now i think ERODE and others will take over

As told by UKS Sir: once, a katha kalakshepa vidvAn known to Sri Arupathi Natesa Iyer (sir's first guru and my parama guru) was awarded a title chathur bAshi. It seems that vidhvAn was not actually deserving much and on hearing it, Arupathi Natesa Iyer said, "cha... dhur bAshi..." :)

and on comedy-awards the list can go on like anything, but, I shall coin a few for now...

if musician (alive) and music dies when singing, sangeetha kAlAvathi

if a vidhvAn refuses to take cheque, sangeetha soodA-money (hot cash only)

if a critic reviews horribly, vasai pEraRingnar

best replying pakka vAdhyam - sangeetha kalA sAra - thee (karpoora buddhi!)

if music is incomplete, sangeetha poosaNum [patch work needed, or else, nee -dead]

if nick's favourite "rasikAs" behave properly, sangeetha AcharyA

for wrong pronunciation and missing sruthi - 'sin'nisai vEndhar

and finally... if someone pays for sabha and sings, sangeetha sir'own'money

:D

If you have the Nedunuri - MSG - Srimushnam Raja Rao ? Coimbatore Rama Navami Concert held in the 80s listen to the speech by Sri S V Krishnan towards the fag end of the concert. After praising the artists and Sri Nedunuri's impeccable telugu diction, he mentions how an artist (not named by him) sang lekana in which apparently he sang the same way as stated by you (suttu konnaru) :)

Non telugus are most likely to sing in that fashion since they learn songs using the Tamil script which is how i found it in one of the kriti books :)

That depends on the non-telugu musician taking extra efforts in learning the language (telugu/sanskrit/malayalam...). MDR/GNB/DLK/DKP/MLV/SKR etc excelled in singing thyagaraja kritis with absolutely perfect diction.

I am not raking up a controvery here :)

Balaji,
This composer likes masAlA dOsA too. Decomposing will come at some point--granted, but decomposing a composition? hope that doesn't happen!
It was fun seeing and listening to you twin pun mannars (paNNukku oli kUTTubavargaL kUDa) during the season.

One more at the Concert of Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam at Coimbatore ...

She sang a pallavi in Shanmukhapriya and the pUrvAnga line goes thus "Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Da Ni Sa pAduvOm". After a scintillating Pallavi session for about 40 or 45 mins she ended the pallavi "Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Da Ni Sa pAduvOm ... pAduvOm .. pAduvOm". when she ended the pallavi the time was already 9 pm and I just quipped after the pallavi was over ... You could have sung "SA pAduvOm SA pAduvOm SA pAduvom" to coincide with the Dinner time ....
