Venue : Sri Krishna Gana Sabha

1) Charukesi Adi Tala Varnam - Lalgudi
2) Meru Samana - Mayamalavagowlai - OS
3) Bhavaye Gopabalam - Pushpalathika - NS
4) Parthasarathi - Yadukulakambhoji - A
5) Kanna Thandri - Devamanohari
6) Tulasi Bilva - Kedaragowlai - ANST
7) Garuda Garuda - Garudadhwani
8) RTP - Shanmukhapriya - Pallavi rendered in Tisra Triputa Talam Khanda Nadai by SP and in Tisra Rupaka Talam Misra Nadai by SV
9) Venu Ganam - Kanada
10) Kannan Nadanamadinar - Ragamalika
11) Mangalam

It was a fine concert by the two veterans. The Charukesi Varnam by Lalgudi provided a nice start to the concert. The Varnam structure is very appealing and in particular I found Prayogams like MNDNPD to be soothing. Meru Samana - a personal favourite, was beautifully rendered with a quick round of Swarams. The Yadukulakambhoji Alapanai by SV was nicely done, dwelling on all classical phrases. The main Kedaragowlai Alapanai was neatly executed by SP and the Krithi was well sung. The violinist's Ragam version was very impressive. The percussionists gave fine support throughout and the Tani was good as well.

The pick of the concert, of course was, the Pallavi. The Pallavi was so designed as to have 35 Aksharams. And it was rendered in a different Talam by each of them - Tisra Triputa Khanda Nadai (7 * 5 = 35) and Tisra Rupakam Misra Nadai (5 * 7 = 35). The violinist responded well during his turns. Trikalam was done and an elaborate round of Swarams followed.

Songs 7), 9) and 10) are compositions of Smt SP.

Overall, a nice concert with a well conceptualized Pallavi.

looks like a great concert and a beautiful pallavi. To have yadukula kAmbhoji and kEdAragauLa in the same concert must have been very interesting. :)

i over-heard Smt Suguna Varadachari telling Sri R K Shriram Kumar about this pallavi after her concert at Raga Sudha hall. However, i couldnt make it to the concert this evening :(

That is an interesting pallavi construction.

Sathej,

1) Was the thisra rupaka reversed - 3 + 2 or the normal way 2 + 3

2) The eduppu on the two thalas should have been different so the arudhi falls on the usual arudhi point of both thalas, right?

swAthi tirunal's puspalatika piece, Subbarama dikSitar's ethereal 'PArthasArathi' and vENugAnaloloni, all in one concert.. must have been brilliant..

Sigh...

They are a great pair with complementary strengths. Came away feeling how lightly they carry their amazing vidwat. SP prefaced the pallavi saying they wanted to try it out "just for tamaash"!!

I too was a little surprised by the Kedaragowlai close on the heels of Yadukulakambodi. Wholesome beautiful presentations of Meru samaana, parthasarathi and tulasi bilwa.

@VK: I believe the thalam was 3+2. You're right. The eduppu was different in each thalam to sync up at the arudhi.

Who is the composer for the Kedaragowla song Tulasi Bilva? and what is the talam for this song?

I am a fan of Suguna Purushotham. She is just right for me in every aspect of her music. Her tremendous prowess in tALams is felt even by those of us who have no idea about them.
I have heard vidushi S. Varadachari only once. It is great that two veteran vidUshis like them perform together. No big egos there, I see. These namesakes also are su guNAS :) Hope I geta chance to hear them as a duo.
