Concert of Smt.Gayathri Venkataraghavan @ Krishna Gana Sabha as part of Gokulasktami Series on 10.10.2009 Saturday @ 6.15 PM
The Team :
Gayathri Venkataraghavan - Vocal
Charumathi Raghuraman or Charulatha Ramanujam - Violin ( Not very sure of the artist’s name)
Manoj Shiva - Mridangam
Sukanya Ramgopal - Ghatam
The Song List"¦..( Not complete since I could not take note of the same and had to leave just after the RTP started, due to time constraint and travel involved)
Vignaraja Kripa Sindho ( Invocatory sloka on Lord Gahesha in Raga Ranjani)
Amboruha Varnam Ranjani GNB
Ramabhi Rama Darbar - Thyagaraja
Composition on Godess Saraswathi by GNB in Raga Saraaswathi or Vijayanagari ( not very sure of the Raga)
Govindarajaya Namaste - Suruti Dikshithar
Devi Brova - Chintamani - Syama Sastri
Dachuko valena - Todi Thyagaraja ( nereval & kalpana swarams at soumitri thyagaraja )
RTP in Bahudari ( very short)
Literally pushing thru the over crowded T.Nagar area which was bursting with Diwali crowd, I managed to reach the venue in time for the concert to srart at 6.15,,,which started on time.
The concert on the whole was very good or rather excellent. And the krithi selection was also very good and consisted of rarely heard items like the Suruti Krithi of MD.
Standing out were the Krithis in Suruti and Todi ( main piece) . Todi Reminded one of the legendary Alathur Brothers who were experts in rendering of this particular krithi.
However the RTP in Bhudari seemed out of place since it was rendered very fast and coming just after heavy weight Todi. Probably a rasika request - not very sure.
The supporting artists were very good.
Tani by Manoj Siva was also compact and good. Surprisingly the Ghatam artist was not able to gel well with the Mridangam artist and most of the time was visibly short of anticipation.
Smt.Gayatri was right with the sruthi through out the concert and bhavam of the lyrics were exhibited beautifully in every krithi.
One more concert to remember for a long time.

I dont think ,if there is a vijayanAgari composition from GNB.There are two compositions of GNB in saraswathi "saraswathi namOstutE" and another "kavalai eLLAm", it should have been one of the two.

Post Pallavi she sang a beautiful krithi of GNB in Kadanakuthuhalam --Mohanakrishna . She also sang Kanna in Madhyamavathi of Papanasam Sivan which had a Diwali message. In all a beautifully planned concert and very well sung as ever in her magnificent voice.

This looks to have been a great concert by Gayatri. Rare songs like the one in Surutti and even Dachuko valena is rarely sung these days, her repertoire seems great.look forward to hearing her in the forthcoming season.
