This is a channel on Youtube that I check often for its varied and rich uploads by Rama Varma. And in the past few days I stumbled up on a treasure trove. Does video recordings of Trivandrum R.S.mani even exist ?? Or for that matter, Tanjavur Upendran ? Kudos to Varmaji for being magnanimous enough to share what obviously is his private collection with the music loving world. I am sure that these videos will be cherished by many....

They are lovely, especially to see musicians like Tanjore Upendran and Trivandrum RS mani whose face is not known to many. Infact there is not even a single photograph I have seen of musicians like upendran. I have seen upendran playing few decades back , but only now I associate that face with the name

PL allow me to share a personal recollection about Trivandrum R.S.Mani(Disciple of SSI): When I got marreied in Tiruchanur in 1967 I told MMI & LGJ that tho' my greatest wish was they shd. give a concert on the occasion I did not wish to bother them as I was not sure whether the audience would be attentive enough. As it turned out T.K.Murthy showed upwith R.S.Mani & Kandadevi Alagiriswamy by themselves& said they had come to perform at my wedding; We scrambled & finished the proceedings so they could perform; Actually as we had to go to Kalki Grdens for lunch we had the concert before any one had lunch!....I am writing this to illustrate the times as well as HOW GREAT these GIANTS were.......Upendran was such a great person as well as a musician! Its a tragedy he didn't live long enough for us to recognise how great he was....Fortunately we have his grand son who is ALREADY BRILLIANT! Also Neyveli Narayanan & Thanjavur Murugabhoopathy are worthy heirs to his tradition....VKV

Watching Sri Upendran, i can associate a lot of his mannerisms in one of his disciples Tanjavur Sri R Kumar. Sri Kumar seems to have a very similar stage presence.. :)

VKV Sir,

To echo your thoughts on Upendran Sir, I have heard much from a few of his disciples, about what a great and generous human being he was, let alone a magnificent musician. He has promoted so many young musicians of his time, and helped in allowing artistes like Mandolin Shrinivas to achieve the status he enjoys today. He was from what I have heard, an artistes' artiste - one who was adored by his peers and someone who musicians would invariably gravitate to.

Youtube is a goldmine for music lovers. And musiquebox and Varmaji himself have uploaded several must-see videos. Here is some that I found yesterday.
In the first one, Varmaji sings an Annamacharya composition tuned by Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna during a concert at the legend M.S.Subbulakshmi Amma's house.

This one has a brilliant percussion duet by Guru Karaikudi Mani and G.Harishankar during one of Varmaji's concerts during the annual Swathi Sangeethotsavam at Kuthiramalika palace in Trivandrum from January 6 to 12.

The next one has Varmaji singing the Thillana in Chenchurutti in the company of Dr.Narmadha, Guruvayur Dorai and Tripunithura Radhakrishnan.

And now we have Varmaji rendering an MDR composition 'Gajavadana.' He is accompanied by M.A.Sundareswaran on the violin and legendary Trichy Shankaran on the mridangam.
