Ms.Savita Narasimhan,F.M Gold,31/05/11

Post by ganeshkant »

Accompaniments:

M A Krishnaswamy – Violin

Shree Sundar Kumar – Mridhangam

Song List:

TeliyalEru rAmA – Denuka

Nee vAdanE – sArangA – (N@sathyambu,S)

kAnavEndAmO – Sree Ranjani – (R)

Maragatavalli – kAmbOdhi – (R,N @ krUra thaithyAdhi,S,T)

Vagaladi – BehAg

What sort of feelings you may have when you meet some one close to your heart after a hiatus? My feelings were some thing similar when I heard the above concert yesterday of Ms.SN, hearing her after Dec’10.

Just when the pallavi lines of TeliyalEru started caressing me in her dulcet voice,I knew how much I was missing her music.

It was just an hour’s time and she packed 5 items very neatly, the pick of the lot for me being the Sriranjani AlApanai and the impact was so deep that I was just humming Sri Ranjani throughout yesterday.

kAmbodhi had all the right ingredients though sung for a shorter time.It had an impeccable fullness.MAK came with a fantastic reply.

Vagaladi was sung with all sweetness.

Sree Sundar Kumar excelled in mridhangam the same way he used to enthrall us in Kanjira.

Ganeshkant,
All songs are the ones I enjoy listening to, each different in its intent and expression. I heard Savita Narasimhan during the season and liked her singing. She would have handled these songs soothingly, yes.

Arasi, U R right.

Meanwhile I referred to a book "MUTHUSWAMI DIKSHITAR SAMAAHAARAM" compiled and type set by Shri P.P.NARAYANASWAMY ( a total of 481 kritis in sanskrit)wherein it has been written as 'MARAKATHAVALLI" and not Maragathavalli.I don't know which one is right.I have this entire 481 kritis in PDF format. So,if any one wants pl.mail to me.I shall forward it to you.

Usually musicians dont sing a neraval for this kAmbOdhi krithi marakathavalli , infact I thought it is never sung at all .Long time back when I mentioned in one of the post (cant recollect which one), some one said that Shri KVN used to sing a neraval to this song too . Savita has taken a rare neraval for this song. Would love to hear the neraval for this song.

Rajeshnat,

A good point.I myself wanted to write this but I was not sure about the neraval attempt by other artists for this kriti. So I didn't highlight though thought about that.

In Tamil the 'ka' sound that comes in between is softened to 'ga'. The original Sanskrit version is correct, this being an MD kriti.

We were taught 'marakata vallIm'.

I've heard the neraval in hari hrudayAvESinIm, mOhinIm' ages ago. Can't recollect if it was Ariyakkudi or someone else. A much better line than 'krUra daityAdi' in my view.

Arasi,

When I was a boy I have heard my mother doing impromptu neraval during her daily chores in the kitchen @ harihrudhaya...

In lighter vein, mothers are good at neraval(meaning distributing equally whatever is there) :)

Punarvasu, :) And sometimes stealth neraval too. The youngest would always demand a bit more.. comply with it but then even it out for others with stuff stashed away out of eye-shot ;)

Punarvasu :)
Don't tell me you don't do niravals in songs as you go about your work! We all do...

Ganeshkant,
My line too for niraval in that song. We mothers seem to go by the old tamizh movie song: ADip pADi vElai SenjA aluppirukkAdu. Now that Fathers Day is coming, I'd leave out the next line ;)

I recollect a few years back when i was regularly following that early morning Jaya TV Music lessons program Spearheaded by our Neyveli sir. On one episode while teaching Maragathavalleem song he particularly mentioned that one should use one's sensibilities to chose the neraval line in this/any song. Pallavi is fine, Hari hridaya veshini is more appropriate. However he did mention that Krura daithyathi is not a good line for expansion, the reason being "why to repeat and elaborate on the word daithya (demon) when there are enough words/lines in the sond highlighting praise of the Goddess"

Harishankar,

I also remember some one suggesting not to do niraval on the line "kapi vAridhi dhAttUnA" ( hope I've written correctly or else some one may correct me)which means " can the monkey cross the ocean"!
