I have the notation for an Ata tala varna in Athana, for which the composer is said to be Patnam Subramanya Iyer. But the sahitya doesn't have his mudra. Instead, in the anupallavi there is reference to a "Shri ugra pandya bhoopala". Can anybody shed some light on this composition and the composer? Thanks.
Pallavi

Anupallavi
Shriman maha merusamana dheerudaina

Charanam

Athana Ata Tala varna

Hi Venkat,
The ugra pAndya bhUpala referred to here, in the nAtakuranji ATa tAla varnam of PaTNam and in the sindhu bhairavi tillAna, which is attributed to Veena sEshanna, Patnam Subrahmanyayyar and PUci Ayyangar, by different people; is the celebrated PANDiturai tEvar.
This varnam, is most likely composed by Patnam Subrahmanya ayyar. In his compositions with the pOshaka mudrA, maybe he hasn't used his other mudra.
PANDiturai tEvar was a cousin of Bhaskara Setupati, and is said to have learnt music from Puci SrinivAsa Ayyangar. He was zamindar of Palavanatham in Ramnad; but lived in Ramanathapuram, very close to the Setupati's home. He was responsible for the 'fourth' Tamil Sangam, held at Madurai in 1901.
People like U.Ve.SaminAtha Ayyar attended the Sangam, and some of the attendees hailed PANDiturai Tevar as a reincarnation of the historic Ugra PANDya, who had presided over the previous 'third' Sangam. This may be the reason for the epithet 'ugra-pANDya-bhUpAla' being used in the songs.
The Tevar also funded the publication of the early encyclopedia-dictionary in Tamil - the AbhidhAnacintAmaNi of SingAravElu mudaliar, and was a supporter of V.O.C.Pillai's shipping enterprise.
