Pitch or sruthi regarding

Post by Shantha »

Can anyone please tell me if the sruthi 4 (for instance) or kattai 4 from the sruthi box is same as the key C4(or D4 or...B4)? Does the level 4 indicate similar pitches or they are 2 different sruthies.

Shruti 1 corresponds to the note C, that is Sa of 1-kattai-shruti will sound exactly like the C on a keyboard
1 1/2 -> C# (or Db)
2 -> D
2 1/2 -> D# (or Eb)
3 -> E etc.
that's why there's no 3 1/2 shruti.

Kattai literally refers to the physical key on a harmonium keyboard, which usually starts with a C.

I think the exact octave of the note is not very important. When you tune your voice or instrument to 1 kattai shruti, you will tune it to c4 or c5 or even c2 whichever is appropriate for your voice/instrument.
