(Key: O=raga outline, A=raga alapana, N=neraval, S=kalpana swaram, T=taniavartanam)

Sri Neyveli Santhanagopalan presented a nice concert with an experienced team of accompanists. dhEnukA, jayantasEnA and madyamAvati alapanas were especially good. The amazing artist Sri M.A. Sundaresan provided very good accompaniment on the violin. His individual raga essays were very melodious as well. If I remember correctly, the entire taniavartanam was in tisra naDai - two initial extended portions followed by koraippu, mOrA and kOrvai.

Ram,
Thanks for the review. Always good to hear about Neyveli's music. M.A.Sundaresan too.
HAridAsulu in yamunA kalyANi is such a fine kriti. The imagery tyAgarAjA creates with this song is majestic.

The list looks slightly MDRish. Can see at least 4 pieces that MDR used to sing often.

Arasi, this is one Haridasulu that gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. Not sure why.

Haridasulu vetale-is a beauty in both Raga and Meaning of Kriti. Remember another kriti of MD in the same Raga-Nandagopala govinda is another classic which was popularised by Mah.Santhanam.
As the meaning goes of praising haridasas coming out in the street praising, dancing, singing in ecstacy a la "Swami purappadu" and the divine joy of enjoying that.. This review, down, is more enjoyable

I was there on Saturday to attend the concert of Vijay Shiva at the same venue........What a Khambodhi was rendered that day........amazing Raga Alapanai............i especially liked the way it was built ..................RK Shriramkumar always adds to the ambience ...........KV Prasad and Vaikom Gopalakrishnan were very good on Mridangam and Ghatom respectively.

Too bad I missed Vijay Siva...for some reason it was not listed in Saturday's Hindu although it was listed the previous day. Anyway, I got tied up with something for would have missed it anyway. I still remember VIjay Siva's Kambhoji at KGS in 2005. Coolkapali, cd you provide a more detailed write-up/songlist?

I still remember Vijay's kAmbOdhi at Kapali FA in 2006! Awesome stuff... can't wait for his visit to Mumbai in October. I'd second the request for more detailed coverage of Vijay Sir's concert.

Third request :) for a detailed review.
His kambhoji I heard at sAstri hall a year ago still haunts me. Is he some kambhoji specialist? :)

Well well well!!!!

I am feeling all the more bad that I failed to note down the songs list.....................
Blame it on laziness.......
Most of the Kritis were rare...All were Thyagaraja Swami Krithis

Started off with Sahana...........Raghupathi Rama.....

Then there was a Krithi in Saveri with some brisk neraval

Nannuvuidachi in Reethi goula followed......was rendered quite pacy......

The Kambodhi krithi was : Shri Raghuvara..............i guess its one among the lesser known Pancha Rathnas of Shri Thyagaraja Swamigal.......
I noted that the main piece was rendered without Neraval...just the swaras and avarthanam .........

Guys i have one request....................I saw in a previous post .....Saint Thyagaraja referred to by name...............I guess none of have the right to do tat.............let it always be St Thyagaraja, or Shri Thyagarajar..........u know.....
After all HE is not ilayaraja or ar rehman......to be considered to be just a fellow human being. Humble request........

I remember a blistering Sree Raguvara by DKJ with UKS on the Mrundangam. I am sure Vijay Siva would have done a great job as well.

I prefer Nannu Vidachi at a slow tempo but that does not seem to be the preference of most artistes....but some others resort to crooning while singing this song in vilamba mode. Balaji Shankar sang a great Nannu Vidachi in one of his commercial recordings...looks to be a DKJ school favourite

Thanks coolkapali for that prompt reply. The sastri hall concert I was referring to also featured shri raghuvara. What a concert it was. Am sure this one must have been a cracker too!

Prashant, That Kambodhi alapana was indeed a dream, followed by Kasi Visweswara.

Vijay, I was goning to suggest using Ram's blog for concerts, since he tends to be my first source for concerts. Even during Dec Season in 2006, I used his website to get info/phone numbers/schedules on all the concerts.....

Ram, How was Sri Bhakthavatsalam's performance? Seems like he is accompanying a vocal artist after a long time.

though not the same occasion as prashant says, Vijay's kAmbhOji followed by kAsi visvEsvarAya at IIT Madras Music Club some couple of years back, still lingers in my mind... he also sang a touching parimaLa ranganAtam with real fitting kalpanai svarams and the nIlambari brovavamma in that concert...

Isn't Brovavamma normally sung in Maanji?
