coming back to the topic of the thread, Some people argue that of the listed ~70 kritis of shyama sastri, only about 40 are actually his compositions and the rest were added to just make up numbers. any thoughts on this?

Well, I have a book by sri parthasarathy on Syamasastri krithis and it has only 40 of them in it which includes varnams and Swarjathis....

<any thoughts on this>
Chaps like me get confused like mad !!
I remember a colleague of mine who used to eat only half of a banana when served at our executive lunch. When asked for a reason he once told me
'you see ,my Brother is a homeopath ..." and went on to list all the ills connected with eating a banana.
I was more confused and prodded further..
"you have told me about the half you dont eat.what about the half that you are eating ?"

"Well" he replied .. "just in case my brother is wrong'

So Bharath , from now on ,just in case the list was wrong,

Coolkarni/Kiran
The piece posted is brOvavamma in mAnji NOT mAyamma in Ahiri.

Ashwin

Can you please post that mAyamma by TNS that you had posted in the sangeetham discussion. That was a superb Ahiri.

DRS,
Here are a couple of my favorite renditions of mAyammA:
DKPs (Kiran - your wish!)

And MSS's version, with a typical slOkam as a viruththam first:

Are there any members who are well versed in telugu, who can explain these gems of SS, and the nuances just like in the Oderyar thread, or DRS thread (both the sangItam and sAhityam)? DRS is doing yeoman service on those threads...can someone do the same here, so that we can appreciate these songs? I am aware of the websites that provide translations, but there is nothing to beat the mood of the 'cyber vidyAlaya' that this forum has engendered!
Thanks.

mUrige muktAya mADi koLLi. Otherwise the title of vidwan will be reconsidered 8) :D

On second thoughts, you have already been moved from the select "vidwan" group to "general" group. So any number of mistakes should be ok. :D

Kulkarni sa'ab,
You can make as many such 'mistakes' as you want: the rendering by Voleti was simply superb with his crystal clear enunciation and calm singing; and the sound quality was A-1...just keep them coming!

Coolkarni sir,
Not to derail your sequence of posting, but can you give us some anandabhairavi krithi (favourite of Shyama sastri) when you get a chance? Thank you.

coolkarni

Post by coolkarni »

sahana priyan..no problems with your request.
actually i have kept the DKJ and TNS renderings for the latter half of my uploading schedule since i knew i was going to get my broadband at home around this time.
I did not have the heart to upload compressed tracks (with associatd loss of quality) or tracks withoput alapana etc for saving on upload times.so i had been working with small tracks till now.
from Friday it will be a "premium" upload .

I may be too silly to ask this. Has shyama sastri composed any kriti praising some other deity than ambal?

I vaguely remember reading somewhere about existance of some such kriti(s?)
