Thank you very much. What is the line of the poem at which the raagam changes from sarasangi to desh ? I was wrongly thinking that there were three raagas only.

=================================
1.This is the land, where mother and father mine,
Lead a happy life chattering loving words,

This is the land, where my people before me,
Lived thousands of years till their death,

This is the land, where in their glorious minds,
Thousands of thoughts arose to make it a better place,

Shall I not salute the land, and tell what is in my mind,
And praise it to my heart’s content?
Shall I not salute this land with chants of,
“Mother I salute you, Mother I salute you”?
-------
2.This is the land which gave me life, brought me up,
And showered bountiful mercy on me,

This is the land where our mothers were born,
And knew the world by their innocent prattling,

This is the land where they became sweet maidens,
And played in the cool light of the full moon,

This is the land where they played in the water,
With their golden bodies and returned home,

Shall I not salute this land with chants of,
“Mother I salute you, Mother I salute you”?

3.This is the land where they became lasses,
Married and managed their homes,

This is the land where they fed,
Their little golden ones and hugged them,

It is this land where they built mountain like ,
And made it a land surrounded by places of worship,

This is the land where they died,
And their ashes became one with its soil,
Shall I not salute this land with chants of,
“Mother I salute you, Mother I salute you”?

From 2:31 line starting "Kanniyaragi, nilavinil aadi," it becomes desh till end.

I hadn't read this thread as it continued, because of my absence from Rasikas.org for a while. There is much more to read up and listen to now in this thread for me :)

From the celestial to the terrestrial...in several of the gatherings on Bharathi and in other literary meets, if Kalki Mama spotted little me, he would ask me to sing the invocation, and I remember his asking me to sing endaiyum tAyum more than once (among my limited stock of songs he was familiar with, apt for a prArthanai gItam).

It was tuned in vasantha by my uncle Sri V.V.Sadagopan for his concert at Bharathi vizhA 1947 (1948?) at ETTayapuram (an all bharathiyAr songs concert, of course). The long time rasikAs here might remember my mentioning elsewhere that as a youngster, I was also there at that august gathering of literary giants and musicians for a few days. The one song which is now heard among all those which he tuned and sang that evening was villinai otha puruvam vaLaithanai vElavA, vaDi vElavA, his little sister Jaya (vidushi Jayalakshmi Santhanam) singing in the background.

Not so famous (mainly due to their NOT being plate music) is this beautiful rAgamAlikA: Bharathi's, tIrthak karaiyinilE. Other Bharathi verses that he sang as rAgamAlikAs were Asai mugam maRandu pOchE, chuTTum vizhi chuDardAn kaNNammA and kaNNan mana nilayai tangamE tangam which we now hear in other tunes. KaNNan mana nilaiyai was released as a plate, sung by Rukmini Sundararajan, his sister-in-law who was a vocalist from Trivandrum, contemporary and friend of Parasala Ponnammal. A regular on the AIR, she was a friend of DKP too, and one year, sang with her at the Music Academy. No one seems to have the record in the family circle and also the other one she recorded: pagaivanukkaruLvAi by Bharathi (all tuned by VVS) and Vedanayakam Pillai's nIyE thuNai paranE on the reverse.

Sorry, I couldn't help jotting down this segment of family history. Well, this is also a rAgamAlikA tale, though not about the famous ones :)

VVS's own compositions, two rAgamAlikAs are available on the internet now, I see. eNNi eNNi manam puNNAgudE, kaNNan innum varavillaiyE and on the reverse, EnenRu kETpAr illaiyO? That is a plate of the era for sure, but not such a famous one :(
