Lyrics/meaning for DVG's Natanavaadidal Taruni from Antapurah geete

Post by ruthmaria »

Hi!

I am looking for the lyrics and meaning of DVG's Natanavaadidal Taruni - a song about a Kuravanji's dance from the Antapurah geete. The language is Kannada.

Unfortunately I do not have any additional info on the song. I got it from this album (link is to the photo of the back cover of the CD): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eyq-Nx ... sp=sharing

If nobody knows the lyrics then maybe someone would be willing to listen to the song? I would also like to know the raga, if anyone can say it by ear. Here is the audio link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1j3RXhu ... sp=sharing

I hope that the hive mind of the rasikas here can help me once again!

Thanks in advance!

OK. Raga = Huseni
Lyric composer = Sri. D. V. Gundappa, or DVG, an unparalleled scholar, writer and philosopher India should be proud of.
Music by Vid. Anoor AnantakrishnanSharma, a redoubtable Vidwan and multifaceted artiste.
Singer Vid. M. S. Sheela, a famous artiste and favourite.

This is obviously a composition presented as a Bharatanatyam piece on some programme.

I will post the Sahitya of the opening verse later.

Thank you, Lakshman, for always being here to help!

Looking forward to the sahitya of the sloka/opening verse, Sachi_R, and thanks for the info on the artistes! And yes, Bharatanatyam is what we'll use this music for - I am actually asking this information for my mother who wants to create a dance to this music, but unfortunately we do not know the language nor could I find the lyrics and meaning online.

You seem to mock the beauty of the autumn moon!
You have a kettle drum and little cymbals in your hands,
Your song of Cupid tantalizes my ears!

Thank you! This is very helpful! Would you or someone be able to give a word to word meaning as well?

OK. You should know that the poet has composed this poem on a statue icon of stone bewitching carved in a temple in Belur Karnataka. Gazing on the figurine, he imagines what the sculptor had in mind and builds a story.

In the past princesses would enlist services of visiting gypsies to dress them up for love's conquest. The gypsy maiden herself was herself oozing charm and dancing, as in this poem.

Thank you, Sachi_R! The antaHpuragIte was published with all of the photos of the statues, was it not? I think I read about it somewhere. Do you happen to have to book yourself? Would love to see a photo of that particular statue, just out of interest.

This was discussed here. Good you remember. I did have the book 50 years ago. No more.

Sreeni Rajarao has it.

Curious. What is your real-life persona? Name? Location?

Take care!

OK Ruthmaria.

I searched and bought an e-book of antaHpuragIte for ₹59.- just now.

Alas. No pictures 🙁 But the text pristine and ennobling from the famed author.

I then searched and got this for you 😊

I am catching up late with this thread, delighted to see this thread!

Sachi avare,

The image you have posted is edited and it is far superior to the image in the hardcopy book that I have.

This thread also reminds me of the first (and only) time I have witnessed a Bharatanatya performance for this song. It was during the 4th Conference of Karnataka Ganakala Parishat, back in January 1974 at Kuchalamba Kalyana Mantapa in Jayanagara, Bengaluru.

I do not remember the performer's name, but I do remember that it was performed to live music orchestra, and the tune and the opening lines of the song have been registered in my brain all these years!
I remember that I sat very close to the stage that evening!

Sachi_R, thanks for finding and sharing the picture! Love it! As to my real-life persona, Ruth Maria is my real first name and I live in the small European country of Estonia. We run a small classical Indian dance studio, which celebrated its 35th anniversary last year.

Sreeni, I only I wish I could have witnessed that performance!

Could someone please clarify whether the song describes the kuravanji, the gypsy girl dancing, or the princess that has been dressed up as a kuravanji? I got the impression that the song describes the kuravanji herself but after re-reading some parts of the translations as well as the comments I got a little confused.

Interesting question!

My own reading is that a Koravanji = Gypsy has come.

The alternative that the princess herself has dressed up as a gypsy doesn't jell. That would not be "appropriate" for nobility.

If the confusion is caused by the word dasi=hand maiden, I am able to interpret it differently - that the heroine is a slave to dressing herself up ie very beauty conscious.

Also the poem in the beginning says she has come and is dancing. So she has arrived from elsewhere (as nomadic gypsies do) into the Palace. So can't be the princess herself.

Anyway yours is an interesting alternative conjecture!

I just checked the book and its introduction, which is itself a long essay on art. But there is nothing there to suggest two characters. The integrity of the character will be lost if deny the role of the gypsy.

Each icon in the set of figurines in that temple is an independent persona and a story in itself.

In fact the title of that photo also says Koravanji the fortune teller. This clearly shows that she is a visiting gypsy.
