SANSKRIT THROUGH SUNG KRUTHIS

Post by RSR »

Most cmrasikas may not be much interested in Sanskrit language, its intricate grammar and literature as such except for understanding the meaning of the compositions being rendered vocally,
Muthuswami Dhikshithar songs are almost totally in Sanskrit. His predcessors like NaaraayaNa Theertha, Sadhasiva Brammendram, compositions also are in Sanskrit only. Though Shyama Sastry and , Thyagaraja Swamy created their compositions mostly in Telugu, they too have given us some exquisite musical creations in Sanskrit.
Carnatic music , like any other system of classical music, must be heard and if possible, sung and is not primarily meant to be ' read ' from books. and discussed threadbare about the grammar, theme and philosophy. Most often , it is a distraction from the main concern for music and is irrelevant to the rasika in either appreciating the ragam or in learning Sanskrit.
With this perspective, the thread will just give the links to the pages with word-by-word meaning and more importantly, to links to the rendition by famous vocalists of the decades from 1930 to 1960.
There will not be any discussion about the theme and such at all, at the cost of giving the corresponding listening experience. The rasikas are l surely capable of judging the rendition for themselves.
Getting stable links for renditions in public domain is rather a difficult and time consuming work. So the progress will be rather very slow and spread over many posts.
As a disclaimer, this is just a compilation and no apologies as it is a unique attempt, not tried so far. Enough of mere words. 'Give us the links', ? Yes. Will be done in subsequent posts in this thread Something like 'Sanskrit songs only' simikar to the demand of Thamizh Isai movement 's 'Tamil songs only'. of 1940's.
(incidentally, both these demands exclude Telugu and Kannada and Marathi etc). In these days of 'virtual concerts', some enterprising and qualified young vocalists may give concerts in Sanskri kru'this only.
( As the focus is on learning Sanskrit words used in the compositions, there is no place for manodharma aspects of CM. ,The clips should accordingly be short and should not have manodharma elaboration and such)

Sri.Govindan's blogs are a treasure for the intended direction of this thread so far as the lyrics, transliteration and translation are concerned. assisted by @Rajani for Sanskrit portions.

Also wanted to mention. The Sanskrit used in compositions by vAggEyakkAras avoid samyuktAksharas (double consonant words) mostly except places like SrI and such. I would say Sanskrit compositions of SrI tyAgaraja actually have less of them than the Sanskrit words he has interspersed in his Telugu compositions.

Essentially they try to follow the tamizh language restrictions, something that is visible in even BhagavatpAda's Slokas like annapURNASTakam.

Now I am surprised at people wondering if tamizh is a musical language!

Not correct. 'koottaksharam' is the unique feature of Sanskrit and its derived dialects.
But, I think, all the CM composers of Sanskrit lyrics, have avoided the 'ha' at the end of the word. For example, samskrutham as a noun. 'vedha paaraayaNam', 'upanyaasam', sangeetham'. etc.
Thamizh indeed is a very sweet language mainly because it does not have 4 varieties like ka, kha, ga and gha followed by all the other Indian languages. So, transliteration scheme for Thamizh should be radically different from those for other languages. English comes to the rescue here. nearer to Thamizh. Sanskritized Thamizh ( with words beginning with ga, ja, da,dha, ba, ra and such are sweeter than pure Thamizh. 'koottaksharam' does occur in words like 'kutram' 'kotra'm', 'kotravai', 'mutram', 'cutram', mandram', vetri', katrarintha', vanmam' etc. What shall we call that language? Perhaps, 'menthamizh'? We should retain the original phonetic when borrowing from Sanskrit. For example, it should be 'premam' and not 'piraemam'. ..'kramam' and not 'kiramam'. Shall we have a separate thread for developing such a transliteration method? 'Writing it as Tamil' is criminal. Let us revert back to the main topic of music please.

I have been following Mr Govindan's blog for more than 8 years and have understood and enjoyed Thyagaraja's and Syama sastri' krits, when they are sung, probably because Telugu is my mother tongue. Though I have been listening to carnatic music for more than 70 years I am not able to enjoy Dhikshitar's music that much. To me all his songs seem to be only collection of adjectives with very few full sentences, except prayers like NamastE, mAmava.

@Govindaswamy
Sir, MD is adored for the music in his creations primarily. and for his erudition on sthala-puraaNams . Shyama Sastry's kru'this also are pleas to Devi. The compositions of Purandaradasa and Kanakadasa have great messages of Social Equality , anti-casteism and rejection of mere ritualistic religion . They were true reformers. Thyagaraja Swami also followed Purandara dasa but his stress was on ethics and devotion. Let us confine ourselves to Music.

Thamizh indeed is a very sweet language mainly because it does not have 4 varieties like ka, kha, ga and gha followed by all the other Indian languages.
There are 2 varieties based on context gangai is with ga and tandai is with da. And no ambiguity as well with natural phonetic continuation. Only the aspirated MahaprANAs are not there which the religious traditions in the tamizh sphere acknowledge as meant for maha mantras.
RSR wrote: 11 Jan 2021, 10:42 'Writing it as Tamil' is criminal.
If the word actually is in a pure tamizh composition, satguru can become saRguru etc. and Sanskrit words can be flattened if the chandas demands it or if that is how the composer had it.

Now pankaja mitra to address the deity of Surya, is to fit the chandas and prAsa - see how language becomes music. Should not be translated as Sun or Sun god or Solar dynasty. Surya vamSam is to identify the dEvata there as well.

I joined this group recently. I have been posting my Tamil translations of Sanskrit based Krithis in my blog (purely for my understanding and not as a composition that one can attempt to sing directly in Tamil) https://prabhusponder.com/category/carnatic-musings/
and intimating the Forum as and when I post. Interested members may kindly visit if time permits. Thanks

Visited the blog of prabhu53. Very nicely presented. Heard the song Madhurambam bhajare in Stavaraja by Yesudas. Yesudas used to sing this in many concerts. I was having one casette where He sang it for more than 30 minutes. It was labelled as Bhavapriya. The swarastanas are similar to Bhavapriya. Can you enlighten me how it is differing from Bhavapriya.

Sir, Welcome to this thread. Though Sri.Govindan's blogs give meaning in English, they do not give meaning in Thamizh and as such, your effort and contribution is really useful. A few suggestins and requests.
1) As you are covering the same kru'this as Sri.Govindan, may I submit that unless there are serious difference , you may stick to his English translation. Giving the Sanskrit words in devanaagari script is good.
2) Shyama Sastry gave 5 compositions in Sanskrit.
I had managed to get two songs. I need help in getting youtube links to the remaining three songs- preferably by 1920-1960 vocalists of repute.
3) After that, if you take up Thamizh translation of as many popular MD kru'this as possible, in free flowing Tamizh prose, it will be a very valuable service.
Regards.

When you take up Karthikeya Gangeya, please include the M.S.Subbulakshmi version, the best is in the following link.

Saraseeruhaasanapriye

composed by Puliyoor Duraisamy Iyer
Smt.M.S.Subbulakshmi

The page has English transliteration.
It will be great if Sanskrit scholars in this forum give the song in devanaagari script and meaning.
@cienu has uploaded an earlier version at

(kindly ignore the advts in the video- a big nuisance)
