SHERTALLAY RANGANATHA SARMA IN ARKAY- 25/11/21

An invigorating concert from Sarma and the team. The varnam in DEvgandhari was new to me. Conforming to high standard as any other varnam of Lalgudi sir. Amazing raga bhavam and gripping talam. The raga alapana of Anandabhairavi was elaborate showing the multi hues of the ragam. Kriti rendering was in the right kalapramanam each phrase oozing with raga bhavam. Elaborate swaras in two kalams added wright to the presentation. Ghatam Karthik requested for a vivadi ragam and then came Ethayya Gati. Sarma always treats vivadi ragams with sensitivity.

The main ragam was Bhavapriya- 44th Melakartha ragam. Very rarely handled by our musicians. Everybody will remember the BHavapriya by S.Kalyanaraman which is the standard. Sarma sang it very well. The flavour of Subhapanthuvarali is unavoidable in this ragam. The ST kriti also is a very rare composition. Even in Kerala it is not very popular. Sarma handled the song with fidelity to the accepted patantharam. Neraval and elaborate swarams- swarams contained very nice patterns and the koraippu was much appreciated. The entire song took 45 minutes.

The RTP was brief- but gave justice to all the elements. Raga name was embedded into the pallavi. Quick ragamalika swarams added colour to the presentation.

The pakkavadyams contributed a lot in the success of the concert. BUGanesh Prasad’s violin was a good match for the vidwat of Sarma. His alapanas were classic and swara returns most appropriate-giving complete raga bhavam through appropriate thick and thin shades. Patri Satishkumar- stole the show with his right volume, variety of strokes, gumkis, sarvalaghu patterns and embellishing the songs. S.Karthik on the Ghatam was his usual energetic combination with Patri.

Great Concert indeed.Arkay Ramakrishnan is doing great service to the Musicians as well as Rasikas.Perhaps Rasikas should contribute liberally to the cause.While listening to the concert i see people saying thanks to ARKAY,but go mute when he appeals people to visit Madhurdwani Website and contribute.

Vaananai Mati soodiya- Tevaram- Keeravani _ one of the most beautiful / finest rendition of this Kriti is of neyveli Santhanagopalan sung in Jamshedpur sometime in the 1990s. Also KVN which goes without saying. A beautiful kriti indeed.
