My friend sang this song and she told me this is a Othokadu composition.
I have learnt quiet a few of his compositions.
I felt the language did not sound like Othukadu's.
Also I have the 3 volumes of Othukadu's composition published by Ms K.Rajammal
w/o Sri Krishanamurthy Bhagavathar.
This song is not there.

It is not in Uttukadu collection. Please ask your friend to provide more of the pallavi line if possible. Thanks.

How does one identify the composer of the kritis?
Some composers do not have their mudras included in their compositions.
How can one get the authentic information?

Sometimes it is difficult to get accurate information. Generally if the reference is there in more than one published book, the composer for a particular kriti can e deemed as authentic.

There are several OVK krithis in which the words 'makara kuNDalam' ( or small variations of them ) appear. May be that is the reason someone suspected it may be an OVK song.

One long shot possibility is the singer started the song from the middle of the anupallavi of the song 'ADinAn nartanam' in nATa with 'makara kuNDalam ashaindu veghu tOraNa varNangaL jAlam malindiDa' and then wrap around to the Pallavi line 'ADinAn nartanam AdinAn..'.

(But you explicitly specified Sivaranjani as the raga, so that seems to rule atleast this song out unless this song is sung in Sivaranjani as well )

There is a divine (deiva) river (nadi) called (enum) gangA that flows (tOyumAm) in the forest (aDaviyilE) of his red (Sen) matted locks (SaDa), and a hissing (SIrum) snake (aravam) that will wriggle (neLiyumAm) in it (adil), and a panther/tiger (ciTram puliyum) will leap (pAyumAm) out.

Ravi, in the C1 of the kriti, I think it may be "siTru+ ampuli" ( or ambuli) ie the small (crescent moon)

Ranjani,
I hope you are referring to the Adiyapadathai in panthuvarali by Papanasam sivan.
What is the meaning of 'pAyumam'? Or is it payumam at all?

Rajani, thanks as usual!!

Chitra,

Here is the corrected version:

There is a divine (deiva) river (nadi) called (enum) gangA that flows (tOyumAm) in the forest (aDaviyilE) of his red (Sen) matted locks (SaDa), and a hissing (SIrum) snake (aravam) that will wriggle (neLiyumAm) in it (adil), and the light small/crescent (SiTru) moon (ampuliyum) will radiate (pAyumAm) - reflect off the water of this river.

Chithra,
Next time you ask for the lyrics of a song, please start a new thread. This way, others can locate the lyrics easily if they are looking for them too. This thread started with makara kuNDalam but has the lyrics for four more songs and meanings too--which means those who are looking for them cannot really find them hidden in the 'makara kuNDalam' thread!
