I have a friend who recently had a baby and he wants to do the punyAjanam by himself since he is not able to find a sastrigal on that particular day. Can someone please provide me the mantras for the punyAjanam ritual for yajur vedham (Iyengar living in the US, Eastern Time Zone)? Thanks a lot.

VK Raman,

The links in that website are inactive. I am not able to download the audio. Only the video (perform) link opens up a login window and when I tried to register it says the registration is not yet open. Do you have any mp3 you can upload ? Thanks a lot.

Start with sankalpam 'shulalaambaradharm...'
followed by any prayer to vinaayaka..
If you know sandhya vandanam just say the varuna suktam
'imam mE varuNa...'
and finally say the prOkShana mantram
'ApO hiShTA mayO bhuvaH...'
and sprinkle the child with the water.
Finally conclude with your iShTa deiva praartana...

CML,
Is a mini-ritual needed when you correct the name of the ritual too on the thread?!!

It is 'puNyAha vacanaM' - not 'puNyAjanam'

Thanks CML sir. I will pass on your suggestions to him. Can someone please confirm whether the mantras posted in the link posted by me are indeed for puNyAha vacanaM? There seems to be no reference to a child in that ritual and I am a bit confused about it. Moreover, it is referred to as Punniyavachanam. Is it same as puNyAha vacanaM or does it refer to a different ritual? Thanks a lot.

Thanks vgv sir, for correcting me.

puNya Aha iti vacanaM = puNyAhavacanaM
(utterance (vacnam) Saying(Aha) let it be purified(puNya (bhavatu))

I was told by some one that the 'pavamaana suktham' is recited during the punyahavachanam-a purifying ritual.
I think this is done when a birth occurs and also when a death occurs.

Sri sUktam is for all auspicious occasions. As also puruSha sUktam!

Punarvasu - You are right, the pavamana suktam is specifically used for punyahavacanam, however it has to be done with proper aavahanam in a kalasam filled with water, chanting of pavamana suktam 3 or 7 times and then use the water to sprinkle on the family members as well as around the house.
