If the song starts before the tAla.it is athItham,eg Lalgudi's varnam in mohana kalyAni and if the song starts after the tAla cycle begins,it is anAgatha eduppu. Eg ThyAgarAja's enta nercina in sudha dhanyAsi(to be more precise, it is mukkAl idam, likewise there are kAl and arayidam eduppus) hope it is clear.

A minor clarification to the apt examples cited by Radhakrishnan. It is LGJ's tillana which has an atIta eDuppu. His varnam vallabhai nAyaka starts on the samam.
