Dear Friends,

I was told that nadhanamakriya is sung with madhayama as sa.

Then I was told that this transformation makes it the same as mayamalavagaula.
This is the part I am trying to understand with little success.

I see that nadhanamakriya is a janya raagam of mayamalavagaula and yet if we take nadanamakriya:

Arohanam: S R1 G3 M1 P D1 N3 and start it with M1 as S, P as R1, D1 as G3 etc., the interval lengths do not match up.

Thus for example S - R1 interval does not match with M1 - P (as there is M2 in between). Similarly, the interval between R1 - G3 (R2, G1 and G2 in between) does not match with P - D1.

I am sure I am making a rather basic mistake in this analysis. Where am I going wrong?

Once I understand this I hope I am able to figure out how that leads to mayamalavagaula.

Needless to say, I am a total novice to Carnatic music theory.

Thank you.

Dear Vasanthakokilam,

Thank you so much for the pointer to the previous discussion. The explanation of the difference between sruthi bedham of MMG and madhyama sruthi MMG helps me immensely.

Best wishes,

You are welcome, Padmini. And that thread is a relatively recent one, so it was fresh in my mind.
