Yet another interesting treat: http://sunson.wordpress.com/2009/07/04/ ... c-music-2/

I suspect this one would be easier. Anyway, enjoy! Any comments/opinions as before are always appreciated!

Note - answers are on the post itself and "hidden" until revealed. So to let others enjoy the post, please do not post the direct answer here - please do not be "that friend who blurts out the raga before we can figure it out" ;). I just want people to enjoy some rare pieces (atleast what I think are rare - may not be rare to all) and get their own individual satisfaction in getting the raga.

Thanks
Arun

Hmm, Shripathi did spoil this one for me.

Arun, perhaps next time is it possible to lock the new thread you start here?
(Or is it only admins who can do this?)

Got it readily since I have heard it from this master before! But the initial ‘grunt’ fooled me to thinking your most favourite for a while till I recovered! I have never looked at the svaras for this raga and I checked with SRJ who differs considerably from yours. Can you reconcile? Again what is R3 doing in that mela :)

The first bit of 4 seconds gave me some clues.. I paused the play and tried to work on it, did not work.. continued the play.. got it in the next couple of seconds. I think your clue about 'a famous song in a raga for which alapana is usually not done' gave it away to some extent.

I'm not familiar with this raga.

I was thinking of kokila dhawani ... Sancharams like gmp seem to be allowed.

cml - R3 was (obviously) a typo :) . I just used aro/avaro from a single source (wiki) and thought it matched the initial part of cittaswaram (at least the little I could recall). I also see now it is quite different from SRJ's - I am not familiar with the intricacies here to know the significance of the difference between the two. Perhaps they also speak to what Srikant observes above.

Thanks Arun! So shall we say the aro/avaro of this raga is just controversial?
The aalaap does not display much of the sharp S-P transition! Though I agree the chittaswarams exploit it vigorously. By the by were the chittaswarams composed by Thyagaraja himself?

But isn't the panchamam taken up from the shadjam via glides during the alapanai? I thought that did give it this raga's flavour. Whereas in a raga like sahAna which has PMD phrases, the panchamam is usually sung straight when starting off the phrase.

cml - from what I can tell even in the first 30 seconds are so there are 3 s-p transition by the vocalist including one at very very start - although the 2nd and 3rd ones are more fleeting.

And as bilahari says the Pa is taken as a slide (bilahari btw, you half-violated my request about direct references in above post, and cml has completely violated it ;) ). I dont know who composed cittaswarams - I doubt it would have been Thyagaraja since in most cases it were later additions.

Chitta swarams for Thyagaraja krithis are usually not part of the original composition. I wonder who composed this chitta swaram? Was it GNB himself.

All great musicians seem to display how they've been inspired by the compositions themselves in their AlApana, even for minor rAgAs (in fact, all the more so for such rAgas I think) The way the artist began his essay was enuf for me to ascertain the rAga. Can't believe some1's actually sung it for more than 3 mins!

The Cleveland aradhana has audio of TR Subramaniam teaching students the song in question with some commentary on the raga. The link below is a page with a number of .zip files.

Arun,

Great mental teasers!!

But the great GNB in true tradtion and vidwat gives away Chenchukamboji at the first word go. That is like a true traditionalist !!!

Geat. Keep it coming !!
