Harimau seems to be the one sane voice amidst all the crazed euphoria.
Absolutely! In his typical curmudgeonly fashion, he has zoned in exactly on why Sanjay deserves the SK, which is for shining the light on many greats who have not gotten their due. From Meesu to Gomathy, he has been more than happy to share the limelight with these past greats.
Which is why I had no hesitation to hijack his thread
Here is a phenomenon, THE phenomenon of the 21st century. When I was coming out of the Academy concert one senior rasika, about 75 years old, commented to another senior, " No one has sung like this before and no one is going to sing like this in future too. Sanjay is the musician of musicians". I have no hesitation is agreeing. I am happy my first post is about the greatest musician in a hundred years time.
I heard this from Subbudu himself (circa 1993) in New Delhi. He was narrating this to a much older family friend and I was just standing nearby.
He wrote a review of an upcoming youngster aged in his early 20s who was already known to many as a creative musician though he did not have a great voice. In Mylapore Fine Arts, this young vidwan was coming out after his concert when Subbu was entering. The vidwan came straight to Subbu clasped his Jibba and intimidatingly asked him "What do you know about music that you dare write such reviews".
Subbu said, "Adikka vandhuttaanya".
Many might have heard about this incident on the grapevine.
Chalk 1 point for the vidwan from me... Anyone who wrote off dharmavathy as just kalyani with a minor difference is an opinionated imbecile in my book.
Another facet of SS that may irritate his critics:
"And it was in 2002, when I was still a nobody, that Shri Sanjay Subrahmanyan called me to accompany him in two of his December Season concerts — at Narada Gana Sabha with Shri R.K. Shriramkumar and Shri K. Arunprakash and at Kalarasana with Shri Mysore Manjunath and Shri Mannargudi Easwaran. He was the first star musician to accommodate me regularly in his concerts. That’s how people started noticing me. I owe a lot to him — thank you, Sanjay anna!" (K V Gopalakrishnan in interview with Niveditha).
So what if the century is only 16 years now, I can say for sure that a phenomenon like Sanjay is not going to appear in this century. His 'sukhi evarO at the MA was something that I had not heard from anybody including greats like ARI or MMI or T.Brinda. So sublime and transcendental it was.
sangeetha kalanidi 2016 should be given to sanajay again.the reason is as follows.his performance at the academy is best ever by any dead living tobe born musician.he is the musician of 300 centuiries.no body can match his creativity.only saraswathi devi can.three slots should be given to sanjay alone.you cannot treat sanjay with normal mortals.his statue should be erected in the entrance of Music academy.people who enter must worship the statue and put some money in the undial so that it can reach the deity.after the concert he must be carried in pallaku befitting a monarch.the hindu should carry a 6months prelude to acheive this goal.if sanjay rasi.kas need any help to get this done, they can get it from the power broker who got the award for him this year.banians bearing the face of sanjay can be sold.when an avatar is there it should be celeberated properly.the sangeetha kalanidhi photo of sanjay should be bigger than others because he is 300 year miracle.hope to see sanjay in the 2016 sadas. he must be given 'BHARAT RATNA immediately. by '"kuthu chappu"
Here is the other side:
" It is rather difficult to explain, what one gains by listening to Shri Sanjay and his stellar accompanists over and over again...Its like a treasure collection, of the best gold and diamond available on the planet....That's exactly what we as rasikas "virtually " collect in each concert of his....it probably all gets deposited in our virtual banks and will follow us in our births to come, if I have to explain using metaphysical terms....but treasure it is-A treasure we can never stop collecting...."
Here is what the singer himself feels:
"“I cannot guarantee each person’s experience. But if 10 people have different opinions on my performance, I am happy. If everybody had the same experience, I would be a commodity, not a performer,”
