It is not gender. It is ego. In North India you can see Zakir Hussain perform with Brijju Maharaj. Would it be possible to see Karaikudi Mani perform with Malavika Sarukkai? There was a time when OS Arun, Aruna Sayeeram and even BMK sang for dance will they do it now? I have seen concerts with Sitar, Sarangai and Tabla performed where they seated Tabla in the middle and the billing had Sarangai palyer on the top. Is similar possible in Carnatic? Could it be possible to have Ravikiran, Shashank and Karaikudi Mani on stage with Mrudangam in the middle and flute getting the top billing?
Gender becomes a casuality to the EGO problem.
There is so much more to the real problem that annoiting MCP label.
Why is a talented singer like Shankaran Namboothiri sidelined in Chennai? It is the social circles that promote and artists who do not have proper marketing connections get sidelined. If the artist be it a male of female takes on right marketing then there are able to line up series of concerts.
A fraternity is formed and that freaternity deremines who makes the cut.
It was very difficult for non-locals, non-brahmins, females to part of this social circle. But, now, the time has come... communication methods are open.

Amid all this (not all the above mentioned problems are new), CM has survived the tribulations in the performing realm!
Nick, your example about a young female musician helping an older male artiste with the luggage says it. It is not a question of one's gender.
We are all supposed to conduct ourselves with dignity in this world, and in a situation like this, the more able of the lot help with hauling luggage. This is only one little aspect of living harmoniously together while they are on a tour. Prima donna attitude is as bad as the ego trips of the male artiste...

Speaking as the mother of 16 year old female Mrudangam artiste, Rajna Swaminathan, I can confidently say that the gender bias is on the wane, especially with the younger generation. Papanasam Ashok Ramani, Carnatica Brothers, Master Balamuralikrishna, R. Suryaprakash, Shashank, to name a few, have had Rajna accompanying them (in Chennai !!). Being much older than her, they would smile and interact with her on the stage.
I did have to tell one young male singer (just a couple of years older than Rajna) to smile at her - he would bypass her and smile at the upapakkavaadyam boy. Anyway, now they are good friends and this is not a problem anymore !!
However, in the South the move is much slower than in the North - for example - female Tabla artistes Anuradha Pal & Rimpa Siva have accompanied and toured with high ranking senior Hindustani musicians.
South Indian male musicians with female violinists accompanying them has been happening for a long time now - T. Rukmini for example.
Female Mrudangam artistes are rare and female Mrudangam artistes accompanying Male musicians are rarer still.
