In the kambhoji TNK-MC duet available on sangeethapriya, MC suggests after alapanai that they can play pancharatna taanam. TNK begins, "maNi ..." and MC says, "Aagattume, mani aana aagattume!"

And TNK launches into a kambhoji tanam.

Srikant, I also remember that concert (TNK-MC) by the effusive appreciation the violinists show each other... There are sabashs and bales and chuchus after nearly every phrase! But what a brilliant concert...

Hello!

A interesting topic. First one should appreciate Carnatic musicians who are masters in singing the songs of different languages which majority of them will not be knowing those languages.

Hats off to Great musicians like MS, MLV and Sudha Raghunathan who sing songs of different languages (here I am specially mean Kannada Dasapadas)

Let me come to my experience , with out mentioning the name of the singer. There is one Purandara Dasa Devaranama which goes like this" Yare Rangana Yare Krishnana Kareyabandavaru".

Here Kareyabandavaru means "to call the Lord" (inviting). A little change id spelling and addition of different alphabet gives altogether a different meaning. Insted of "Kareyabandavaru", the singer sang as "Kereyabandavaru" meaning " to scratch". In this song it gives the meaning who has come to scratch the Lord.

The lyrics is in such a way that the Kareyabandavaru comes in every line.

Imagine the reaction of audience and the accompanying artistes who were from Karnataka.

In an identical incident, while rendering the famous viruttam(Ughabhoga in Kannada) -'Aneyu Karadare...' it was hilarious when it came to the line -'Sabheyalli Draupadi Keradare Sri Krishna
Bandhano' (which meant Lord Krishna descended when Draupadi scratched)

In a concert, Chembai was accompanied by a middle aged man and a young boy on the violin and mridangam respectively.

When singing swarams, Chembai sang "...mamamama..papapapa..thathathatha..." (when he sang "mama" he pointed at the violinist; "papa" pointing at the kid, and "thatha" pointing at himself)

In Tamil:
Mama = Uncle/middle aged man
Papa = Child
Thatha = Grandfather/old-man

M.S.Subbalakshmi has remarked about chembai's humour as well.
Apparently, in a concert where he was accompanied on the violin by PApA Venkataramiah, chembai sang KedaragauLa, and in the Kalpanaswaras, incorporated phrases like pA-pA nI dA pA pA [pApA nee daan pApA!] and pointed at the violinist with his babe-like grin...

Yes indeed....hats off truly to those musicians who put in great efforts to learn the language and then sing, or at least get their acts right in those particular kritis...MLV & Sudha Ragunathan are truly phenomenal when it comes to Dasara Padagalu, BMK's Sanskrit/Telugu, Aruna amma's abhangs...A very senior artiste made a mess of Thyagayya's 'ethavuna ra' and insisted on singing 'neelakadal neeku' instead of 'nilagada neeku'. Another senior lady musician got her words mispronounced in Jagadodharana in one of her albums. She however agreed, when pointed out and mentioned that she had corrected herself later....Music is definitely the universal language, but that really does not mean it defies the language

Someoe coming out of an Academy concert had to go urgently. Hence sat down right there around the road corner. One of his disciples said to him

"Mama.. ingellam pona piduchindu poiduva"

to which he replied without getting up

"VeenathanEdA poradu, piduchindu pogattumE"

In one of MDR's rendition of bhAvayAmi raghurAmam, he sings "bhAvayami jayarAmam" after the mOhanam part. The audience laugh.. probably Lalgudi Jayaraman was accompanying him? He says something about Jayam..could not catch it all in the recording.

This was told to me by one of my friends. It seems ariyakudi iyengarval was resring in his house one day when he was informed about the visit of Sri.Manakkal Rangarajan.

Iyengarval immediately is reported to have said "Avana appdiye vara solladha. kAAla alambindu vara sollu"..

This was sometime in 2006 january if am not wrong.. Ayodhya mandapam was the venue. It was a felicitation function organised to felicitate Sri.M.Chandrasekhar who was awarded the "Sangita kalAnidhi" in 2006 jan 1st(again if am not wrong..)

Sri.MC played a solo concert that day after the felicitation function and UKS sir and EMS mama were the accompanists.One of those concerts where I had the fortune of going along with uks sir.. The main kriti i dont remember exactly but all that i remember was a sublime thodi.. After the AlApana MC mama (i think he has an habit of having polo) took a polo (uks sir was not offered polo) before starting tthe kriti.

UKS sir took the mike and said "ippdi polo va solo va sApadrElE ??" The entire ayodhya mandapam was in splits....

Once Neyveli Sir was preparing for his Jaya TV Programme where i was about to play. Before preparing he was generally telling about the lack of respect being given by the disciples to a Guru and was also reminiscing about his and my reverence to our respective gurus and His guru Shri TNS' s reverence for Sankara Sivam Sir. At that time i quipped and told suddenly sir we should not teach Mayamalavagowla to the students hereafter. Then he asked what raga should we start with ?

I immediately said "Saramathi" --> (Saarai Mathi - Meaning Respect Guru)

Immediately Neyveli Sir laughed and all the others around

The Story goes like this : There will be a Tea Estate owner who will be very rich and the movie is about the Tea Estate owner becoming poor.

How he became poor etc and all came up for discussion. something hilarious. Finally something was really hillarious. At that time a railway catering personality was selling Tea in our compartment and that turned the above story into a hilarious one.

Tea Estate owner will finally end up selling Tea in Railways and we have to make a music for that occasion and the song goes like this "Chaay HO" .....

Once a great mridanga vidwan who always used to accompany a vocal vidwan has always been very naughty and playful off stage. On one foreign trip all the artistes were sitting and discussing the evening programme. Then the main artiste said i am going to sing "Vaarana Mukha Vaa". this mridangist from that point onwards started jocularly singing "VaaNaramukha Vaa" many times so that it brainwashed the vocal artiste that he started off the concert by singing "Vaanaramukha Vaa" without knowing it and the same mridanga vidwan burst into laughter and corrected after two or three times.

Once a senior artiste was invited as chief guest. Sometimes senior artistes will try to undermine the capacity of the junior artiste's power of perception and make fun out of it. It so happened i was co-ordinating one such function where a senior artiste was invited as a chief guest. When the artiste was getting out of the car he asked me "Seruppuleye Caar a vittudalama ?" (Can i leave the car in the chappal? )

I said : "Yes".

He laughed and asked me "Ennappa Naan seruppeleye Caara vittudalamannu ketten neeyum Aamamnu solriye" (I asked whether i can leave the car in the chappal you said yes?)

I quietly said : "Neenga Eppadi vidarelnu paakkalamnu thaan appadi sonnen" (I just wanted to see how you do that sir ...!!!!!!)

In years past at Shanmukhananda sabha, the same artist would perform on Saturday and Sunday. In a brilliant Chembai, MSG and then young now very famous mridanga vidwan concert when tani avartanam began, Chembai announced "yellaram canteen pogalam. Evan ipo kannaku thodangir kan. samatha ka vararthaka rhombha time yedakam." Sothikende erupan.

The audience had the splits. Of course that is what happened on the previous day's concert, which prompted Chembai to make this comment.

Here is my share on behalf of musicians:

1. Shri thanjAvur Sankara Iyer (TSI) told this anecdote in our coolkarni concert at NSG's house . It went loosely like this "A rasika asked the singer whether the alApana was reetigowlai or Anandabhairavi when he sang alApana of either one.The singer said if I sing marivere it is Anandabhairavi , if I sing janani ninuvina it is reetigowlai"

2. trs and ramnad krishnan once went to a lec in music academy where smt muktha was demonstrating this raga. they could not recognize this raga but later were told it was ghanta. They felt that it was a raga that needed to be mastered, so they returned to their respectice home towns and decided to get a hang of this ghanta raga.

After 6 months, when trs and rk met at a function, trs told rk that he was unable to do anything with ghanta - for which rk said:"ghantale onnume illeyA, dhanyaasiya thappaa padinaa adhudhaan ghantaa"(If you mess up and sing dhanyasi then it becomes ghanta)

to which trs replied:"appudiya? appo, naan ippovarekum dhanyaasienu nenechu padinadhu ghantaadhaano??" (Does that mean all these days may be I was singing ghanta thinking that I was singing dhanyAsi )

3. In last year @mudhra , suryaprakAsh was singing shankarAbharanam alApanai and was elaborating on gAndharam , mudhra being close to railway track , a train passed fast , At that time suryaprakAsh quipped "train la varum gAndhAram , training layum varum gAndhAram" and continued singing.

this one is not hilarity in kutcheris exactly, but hilarity in mrudangam class.During my years at music academy , a friend of mine was asked to play a thani in Adhi-thAlam 1-kalai samam. He unfortunately did not see the thAlam for the entire thani and finally finished in the little finger (ie 4aksharas after samam)

Erode Nagaraj sir, UKS sir were all there..My friend was asked "you are supposed to play a thani at samam, but you have finished in the little finger???"

To this UKS sir said "adHAvdhu, ungallukku lam purila..avan entarO mahAnubhAvulu ku thani avarthanam vAsikkiran..avana poi samathla mudikka solriyE pa??"

May not sound too funny here, but it was really funny considering the situation and the tone with which he said.

Probably the most funniest and the most memorable incident in my life occured during my mrudangam arangetram. One of my dad's colleague (he is from north and is not into concerts and all) who was present for the concert , after the concert was over, he asked my dad

"you are saying this is his first concert and you have made such arrangements, then why was he sitting in a corner(referring to the mrudangam artiste's position) and playing?? He should have sat at the centre and played...." Till date i used to think as to what would have happened if UKS sir heard that..
