Hilarity before concert...
I met Professor Narendran in our recent concert at IIT. He said: There was a woman who had some wheasing and nose block, hence, she was not able to smell correctly. So to avoid any tragedy, her husband a brainy scientist, connected an alarm which sends her a message from near the stove to her laptop, as she used to on line G-Talk always. How would he named the detector?
"Gas-Ping"
Gayathri said, the weather makes her cough (rarely). Me: Don't worry, since you are cow(gaai), calves won't trouble you.
Narendran: If a girl sings shrI, then it is sthree rAgam.
Me: if someone can sing isthiri (ironing clothes) rAgam, that will give warmth for this weather.

The above is lovely . It just reminds me of one thamizh movie(dont recollect the name) where kamal says driving an aeroplane is very very easy as there is no traffic jam when compared to driving in roads.
Just extending your sishya-guru conversation:
-----------------------------------------------------
Sishya of Erode says "Submarine oTTumbOdhu sea erode achunnA enna panrathu sir"
Guru Nagarajan says "Dei elementary you come and see erOde, so that you take lessons with me"

ettaNA(atANA)? romba nALAnA (nALanA) marandhu vidum...
reading this ship messages, I remember the cricket match happened between India and South Africa in Delhi. We won and I said,
"the SA team has Vessel, Rice and Cook. If they had managed to have some fire also, they would have made their bread"
(Kepler Wesssels, Clive Rice & Jimmy Cook)

Lest people forget:
Originally
One rupee = 16 aNAs
0ne aNA = 12 pice
There were coins one pie, kAlaNA (1/4 aNa); arai aNA
The kAlaNA had a hole in it and was called 'OTTai kAlaNA'
The expression was used that somebody was not worth even kAlaNA or OTTai kAlaNA.
In fact kAlaNA was worth 3 pice and a better expression was 'pisA peRAthavan' (person not worth one pie (plural was pice/pies).
Actually I was told by a Tamil paNdit that the former expression came from an older expression : 'kAlaNi peRAthavan' meaning not worth the slippers!

There was this 'OTTai kAlaNA'- the coin with a hole- in some houses it was used while lighting a big kutthuviLakku; it will be kept on the 'mukham' and the wick will be passed thro it and then lit.

OTTai kAlaNA was preceded by a 'full' kAlaNA with King George V's head. The OTTai was introduced to save precious copper that was needed for the war. In olden times it had a good purchaing power when one could have a fulfilling meal for that price (idli saambar and tea to go with) and a full royal feast for 2 aNas. A montlhy salary of Rs 30/- was a princely sum!For example the OTTai kAlaNA could buy you two cocoanuts!
By the by the OTTai one was being used by women to have a perfect round bindi for a long time (before the sticky ones were introduced). I am reminded of the 'thread trick' TS used to get straight vibhuthi (that MKR referred to). But MS would not have used the OTTai since here divine bindi was too big! Does MKR know the secret?

To Vasanthakokilam's question as to when the transition took place to the decimal system-I think it was in 1957. Interestingly this was one issue that Rajaji opposed with vehemence and introduced a counter measure(thro Swarajya and Kalki) namely One rupee should be equal to 64 kalanas--he argued that people who are used to the 64-pisa system would find the decimal system very complicated. He was so vehement in his opposition that the two powerful magazines that he had sway over outdid each other in their stridency.TS was completely sold on this issue.
I think History would now prove Rajaji(prescient as he was in all other worldly matters) was not so prescient on this issue.

In those days small silver blade-like things were there, which had different designs of different sizes(like stencils)-eg. 3 circles -small,medium, big or three 'tilakams' etc. With these one can have a perfect round kukmumam. I still use what my mother gave me.All one has to do is, keep it on the forehead, first apply some vasaline or something in the circletilakam, then apply the kumkumam.

Two iddlies, one vadai,a tumbler coffee (some people used ti say tamzhar because it is the most favorite drink of tamizhars) cost six kalanas. if a grand father gave kalana to his grandson or granddaughter, they used to run to the shop for a chocolate or big peppermint. My grandfather used to bribe me a kalana everyday to get him snuff without the knowledge of my patti He used to hide the podimattai and have a pinch stealthily. gobilalitha

'Sticker bindis'-were also available in those days-they were called 'kujili pottu' and I think the shops(kaDais) inside the madurai temple were famous for these; they used to have shining patterns and we had to use some sort of a 'gOndu'(pisin) to stick them. They were not self adhesive as todays sticker bindis are.

Erode
Perhaps your best buddy mannarkoil balaji knows for sure. In the recently concluded yearly rememberence day of PSP day, before the start of the concert , there was one disciple who sang a korvai with the lines "pazhani subramania pillai". It was very creative and well done.
BTW Erode your voice to a great extent and may be your face too resembles 'madan bob ' the music director who is also a film comedian nowadays , though I dont want you to keep perennially laughing like him.

I stand corrected. Let me change it tosrkris wrote:Ambu is arrowsramaswamy wrote:ambu (Tamil) and lance (English) which have the same meanings.
Lance is vEl
ambu (Tamil) and lance (English) which have the similar meanings.
Hey Isn't it English's fault that they named it ambulance. Shouldn't it be called "velLance" instead?

Valayapatti’s speech: "An ambitious mother brought her daughter to me so that I could assess the child’s music. At the end of the performance I said that girl must imbibe layam. A week later the child came once again, this time with a sore throat. I asked the mother for the reason. She said, "why sir, it was you who said that she must have lime and so I have been feeding her with lime juice every hour"
