Tyagaraja, the foremost composer in Carnatic music, is also one of the most expressive in the way he uses words, ideas and statements. He is a wonderful storyteller and his manner of expression makes him a katha kaalakshepam specialist, with the colourful and dramatic manner in which he conveys what he wants to say. This programme includes a few of his compositions where he uses striking metaphors or comparisons to substantiate the idea that he deals with in the songs.

Shaadava ragas, or six-note ragas, are not as common or as popular as five-note ragas. Five-note and seven-note scales are seen in many musical systems around the world, but six-note scales do not appear to be the foundation of any major music system. In Carnatic music, too, six-note ragas are not much fewer in number, at least as far as popularity is concerned. This programme features a few six-note ragas in different combination of swaras, including a couple with asymmetric arohana-avarohana combinations.

Most of Subramanya Bharathi’s literary and musical output was a result of his commitment to India's independence and to social upliftment and change. Bharathi's poems are mostly songs to be sung, and he himself tuned them to appeal to common folk. His patriotic songs and the verses and songs that he wrote visualizing Krishna in various roles, have over the years become very popular. This programme features a few of these ever-popular songs and compositions of Subramanya Bharathi in connection with his birth anniversary on Dec 11th

Rarely is an artist so completely synonymous with an art form as M S Subbulakshmi is with Carnatic music. The aura of her personality and the quality of her voice captured the hearts of listeners like no other musician. Every song she popularised still retains the special tag of the ‘MS hit’. We present some of these on this programme which carries a tribute in her memory
