The famous Tyagaraja kriti Evarani is set to this ragam.
My question is: how does this ragam differ from Kharaharapriya?
To my ears, this ragam sounds same as Kh.priya
Also, are there any other kritis in this ragam? (that is, assuming it is different from Kh.priya!)

Hmm, just found the answer myself at http://www.karnatik.com/ragasd.shtml#dEvAmrutavarshani
dEvAmrutavarshani
22 kharaharapriyA janya
Aa: S R2 G2 M1 N2 D2 N2 S
Av: S N2 D2 P M1 G2 R2 S
So it seems Pa is varjyam on arohanam and there is a vakra prayogam in arohanam.

it was a favourite of the flute maestro TRM .It was referred to as nadachintamani . I am reminded of Nellai TKSubramanian , B grade musician of AIR,Tirunelveli, BELIEVE ME ,HE HAS THE INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF NEARLY 300 RAAGAS. Just tell him the raaga, he will at once give tHE arohana AND AVAROHANA.gobilalitha

Another one rAgA, one kriti, Thyagaraja only rAgA with a cool mouthful of a name.
Aro : S R2 G2 M1 (N2) D2 N2 S
Avaro : S N2 D2 P M1 G2 R2 S
When you do look at it, you wonder why this rAgA is even necessary when kharaharapriyA already exists. There isn't a single phrase in it that kharaharapriyA itself is not capable of doing, although skipping the P in the arOhanam might make it stand out just a bit from KHP with a greater emphasis on the D2.
In fact, one reason this raga stays in my mind is because I could never really identify it apart from kharaharapriyA.
So the only one kriti that exists in this rAgA - evarani nirNayinchirirA - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-WqLi8H7wc - by TNS with a detailed AlApanA.
That P isn't skipped in the arOhanam all the time and does appear in some phrases, making it even more KHP. The N2 in () is also optional and like khamAs, one can sing GMD, directly, which appears in the charanam and only here one sees a departure from kharaharapriya, although KHP is also capable of handling the same vakra phrases.
In retrospect, the rAgA never took off beyond this one kriti simply because it was only a slightly modified kharaharapriya and considering the history of changes in ragas and songs, I even wonder if the sole kriti (evarani nirNayinchirirA) wasn't originally composed in kharaharapriyA itself.
A good name that could have been put to use for a much more unique possibility. But no problem, let's give it more love. The kriti itself is an excellent and technical composition. And of course, it's Thyagaraja.
This was the first recording I ever heard of it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZP3sAd8gG2E - there was really no team like the ARI-TNK-PMI combo.
And of course, MS Amma - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x_BfWGfUpo

Evarani does not sound to me like any other Karaharapriya krithi
So it is a different raga

Yes it is different, but only at one place. The other kritis in KHP haven't explored the upper octave like evaraNi, which can create that effect, but if I notate the song down, you will see what I mean.HarishankarK wrote: ↑05 Jun 2019, 16:16 Evarani does not sound to me like any other Karaharapriya krithi

Didn't S.G. Kittappa sing it even earlier in dramas and concerts?

Growing up, I heard Kittappa's version on a 78RPM record. His rendition was close to (or maybe the same as) the one on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6mh7gYtIs4

Hello all,
I read that
"the Musiri and the Mudicondan traditions, dEvAmrtavarShiNi did not use P at all, even in sangatis."
Can anyone help me in tracing any recordings that are of these style.

Re: Devamrutavarshini / Nadachintamani
a funny incident to share from tanjavur shankara iyyer's lec-dem:
a discussion about the ragam of krithi 'evarani nirNayincirirA' came up so he started with:
as in the krithi saint thyagarajar says
evarani nirNayincirirA (is rama) - vishnu / shiva /bramha /parabramha ??
shankara iyyer said it is also applicable to raga too
evarani nirNayincirirA (raga) - devamruthavarshini / nadachintamani / kharaharapriya ??
