Someone made a similar statement under kutcheri reviews too.srinivasrgvn wrote:Well, even I think the forum is quietening down. The level of activity seems very low now compared to how it was a few months ago. People are turning busier(includes me!!) =)
I think the peak period begins around the end of November, coinciding with the Chennai music festival. Discussions on "sabhas on line" and "sabhas off line" resume, apart from all other relevant topics.

Well, it is quite astonishing to see such an alarming statement. With true and unintentional interest, I ask you very kindly why you feel so. Can you name a few of those topics? And, which members took a back seat? Please tell me. I am not asking this to arouse controversy; I just want to know why you feel so. =)johnlovescm wrote:too much of mundane / irrelevant topics being brought up and discussed. And in the name of moderation ....
lot of active members who contributed initially have taken a back seat.

Very true. I feel very uncomfortable now that I can come only once a day for about half an hour(except weekends)! Before, I used to login about 5-6 times a day! =)coolkarni wrote: How many of you can get through a day or two without logging in - and stay comfortable ?
That will be an index of the health...

Relative to the general internet, we are in that so called "long tail" of web sites. A niche site with a dedicated set of viewers. Look at the "keywords" section at Alexa for what search terms drive people to our site. That will tell you what interests people to our site.
For such 'long tail' sites, data collection is often spotty and can be skewed in short term. So absolute numbers need to be taken with a pinch of salt.
Look at 6 months and max charts. It goes up and down a lot. Interestingly, the peaks do not correspond to the december season.
Also look at downstream and upstream sites. They tell you from what sites people come to our site and to which site people go to after coming to our site. The list of upstream makes sense but the downstream sites do not make any sense. I thought sangeethapriya and mediashare would figure in the downstream sites.

Alexa gives the following stats for our members, although I dont know how it arrives at these conclusions:
1. Relative to the general internet population, 25-34 year olds are over-represented at rasikas.org
2. Relative to the general internet population, people who went to graduate school are greatly over-represented at rasikas.org
3. Relative to the general internet population, males are greatly over-represented at rasikas.org
4. Relative to the general internet population, people browsing from work are over-represented at rasikas.org
5. Relative to the general internet population, people with children are over-represented at rasikas.org

Perhaps it is going by domain name of visitors (i.e. client IP address => dns) and filtering out common dsl subscribers?
But I really dont know how they would go about in arriving at an estimation for the others.

first reason i don't log in most of the time is because i end up getting lost in the forums and spending too much time reading and researching
more importantly, the rasika forums have become somewhat purist. everyone is entitled to their point of view, and can like whatever they want, but 'we all know what's pure and good and right, and what is tainted and does not fall within the parameters of carnatic music.'
that could make a timid next-gen or newbie CM lover feel reluctant to post a point of view for fear of being perceived as outside the norm.
peer pressure
and sometimes, rarely but sometimes, they are chided and/or called out. to be honest, in posting this, i wonder if some protective rasika forumite will tell me to quote an actual post that makes me think this and am procrasting about hitting that submit reply button...

Imagine in a place where one could not access internet with its full speed wherein writing was so diificult due to bandwidth issues. You dont have to be in a mountain; I had spent a week in Kerala (Aluva) where things are still in 64/128KB bandwidth.
That raise another question "Does our forum consists of people who are only in Tier A cities(India) like Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai etc. where the internet is not an issue? " ( I will leave out who are in other countries like US where internet penetratiion is quite high)
