Yesterday was a memorable concert, by Smt Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam. The concert was part of the Alathur Brothers Anjali celebrations at Narada Gana Sabha Mini Hall. The accompanying artistes for the concert were Akkarai Kum. Subhalakshmi on the violin, Neyveli Sri. Skanda Subramaniam on the Mridangam and Trichy Sri. Murali on the Ghatam.
The song list for the evening was special because it comprised songs which were popularised by the Alathur Brothers.

6. Arul Seyya Vendummayya - Rasikapriya - Aadi - Koteeswara Iyer
7. Karpagame Kan Paaraai - Madyamavathi - Aadi - Papanasam Sivan
The concert started off energetically with the Abogi varnam rendered in madhyama kaalam and charanam in dhuritha kaalam. Rara Ma Yinti was so beautifully rendered, it visually portrayed to us, Thyagaraja seeking Lord Rama’s blessings and begging the Lord’s presence by his side. The kalpana swarams at the pallavi line made the song complete. Kalyani was rendered in great splendour, with striking brigas in Thara Sthayi, brightening the alapana. The song rendered was a kriti often sung by the Alathur Brothers - Amma Ravamma, in praise of Thulasi. The neraval was rendered in the line Tamarasadala Netri . This was followed by the composition of Thyagaraja in Hari Kamboji - Enta Rani Tanakenta, majestically rendered.
The Saveri Alapana for the RTP was soulful, with very beautiful phrases around Ri - Ma - Da - Sa . The energetic Thanam phrases ending in each swaram of the Ragam (S R M P D S) was skilfully reciprocated by the violinist. The pallavi line was "Kari Mora Lina Leda Hare Krishna"

A rich tribute to te versatile Alathur brothers. The RTP rendered by Vijayalakshmy in Saveri was really inspiring bringing out the scholarship of the artist. She has proved yet again that she is not just another artist but someone who is accomplished in all aspects of Karnatic music. A wonder ful perormance wilt a lot of vigour.

* What VS demonstrated was something more than paying reverential tributes to legends of yore.
* Alatoor school known for its laya aspects besides perfect diction on sahithya had established complicated pallavis as their forte.The legacy has been left to only a handful of stalvarts who are with us today to practice and propagate.
* The task for a seasoned artist who is from a different school to adapt &apply their model beyond the limited purpose of paying obeisance is particularly challenging when she could not have had direct guidance/tutelage of that school except perhaps thro' recorded prog. of Brothers available and the same when occasionally heard in concerts&Lecdems of the dutiful sishyaparampara.-on laya aspects.
* The memorial concert of this nature is not exactly the same as that for other legends wherein either sishyas/performers will reproduce/emulate the pattern of gurus sufficiently supported by sishyas/recordings or other material available.This ,we are aware ,will encompass bani ,popular nos,etc.,* VS, as I have observed over years from the time she had started invariably accompanying SKA S.Rajam in all his Lecdems.-learnt PS,Kotiswara Iyer,MD,GKB kritis widened her repertoire in many vaggeyakaras &GNB as well in recent times had never stopped with her innovation -She has developed a model for singing Swarabedam in seasonal concerts including RTP in difficult ragas like Suryakantham.As if they are not enough,she has of late started popularising lesser known Vaggeyakaras like Prof.B.M .Sundaram.&specialising on thematic varieties-Krishna,Devi,Rajeevalochana.....

* I felt the above observations are relevant before I write reviewing on the concert.
*According to VS it is Prof.TRS who has shaped her on difficult laya gnana .Three cheers to him !
VS has made the occasion memorable by downloading the complicated pallavi structure through her sheer passion and hardwork.When pallavis are handled with precision and delivered in their original style discerning rasikas like me feel proud that good tradition has staged a come back( which would have remained a mere admiration if persons like her had not explored in their attempts to make it reach us!)The presence of vibration(blessings) should have triggered the artist to import exact contents.* One more point is that the teamwork on that evening was equally reponsible for safe trajectory of Pallavi.

* VS had covered the kritis mostly handled by Alattor Brothers.Harikamboji piece Enthara nithana I can not think of that without neraval in "Seshudu sivuniki bhushudu Lakshmana" thanks to impact created by MSS. Perhaps for want of time she had to skip!Akkarai's expression of ragas Sama &Valaji in the ragamalika following RTPwas subtle.Reversal of all ragas was also on smooth phase.Kudos to artists!
*In sum,the organisers to the prog hailing from the sishyaparampara were constantly acknowledging the vidwat of artist(in their popular domain&impact of one female voice in the place of two brothers voice)accrediting her level.
