It was a great concert. Smt. Rama Ravi started off with a few words about Sri Raghava Rao and mentioned she would include a few compositions that were taught to her by Sri Raghava Rao. It was later mentioned during the concert that they were the darbAr, madhyamAvati and latAngi pieces.
The concert was filled with deep classicism from the word go. The kritis renditions were all precisely perfect. The manodarmam was very apt and measured for each kriti. The concert had a wonderful start in the bhairavi varNam. The sAvEri kriti followed up with a quick round of svarams. The harikAmbhOji AlApanai was short and yet very appealing. The kriti rendition was stunning and appropriate svarams followed.
The darbAr, was something i personally enjoyed the best in the kriti. The AlApanai was quite inspiring and the kriti was a rare one, rendered very beautifully. The madhyamAvati and latangi kriti, with neraval and svarams, followed thro'.
The Anandabhairavi kriti with its intricate cittai svaram rendered with various permutations, led to the main piece. bEgaDa was very elaborate and bhava laden. The kriti was rendered with beautiful neraval and svarams.
The saurAshTram padam was very beautiful. The hamsadvani piece was stunning and rendered with a lot of weight. The kEdAragauLa padam was great too. The khamAs and suruTTi javaLis were very nice too.
Smt. Nandita Ravi provided very apt vocal support to her mom-cum-guru. The accompanists were very good and played their parts perfectly. The violinst was very good in both following the main artist and in giving sensible replies. The mridangist played with good anticipation and in tune with what was presented. His tani was good also.

Earlier in the evening, Vidwan Neyveli Sri R Santanagopalan spoke about Vidwan Sri P N Raghava Rao and his music. Sri NSG also elaborated about his association with Sri Rao and his friends including stalwarts like Ramnad Krishnan, Thanjavur Shankara Iyer et al.
I walked in late, only towards the end of the talk and hence missed it

not really. Smt. Rama Ravi does perform whenever and wherever she is called to sing. She is a regular at the Academy Morning Slots (though she is not singing this year). I have myself heard/wrote about her concerts at MA, Ramana Kendram, P S high school and some other places too. She has sung at IIT as well, atleast twice since i have been here. She also travels to places like Coimbatore where she is called to give performances. It think, she is a regular at the Rajalakshmi Fine Arts there..mahesh3 wrote: Does Rama Ravi only give concerts in Raga Sudha Hall, or do you only see her concerts there? I cant recall if I've ever read a review of her's in another location.
couldnt agree more with u on that. truly a musician who deserves more recognition, visiblity and honour.mahesh3 wrote:Her reneditions are indeed stunning (I like Nanditha Ravi also)....clearly head and shoulders above the rest!

hi this is rama ravi's niece..let me put some insights into rama ravi's (periamma's) views n thinking about this whole kutcheri madness. she dosent prefer giving a lota kutcheris...she is at total peace this way. this is the Brindamma and Muktamma way of thinking. her music is something soul stirring and the bani itself is crisp and the importance to raga bavham can be noticed. Rama Ravi had her early lessons at kalakshetra. so her training at kalakshetra and then going into the Brinda bani makes her an absolute traditionalist and no compromise on the singing style. They were never crowd pullers ( Brinda and Mukta also had few kutcheris). this music is not for the general mass. the crowd was few for periamma but consisted of stalwarts like SSI, PSN, KVN,MS, malladi bros etc..she is a musician's musician. (even today TRS and PSN mama have enthu to sit all the way throughout the kutcheri and njoy it!! )
about her only kutcheri at raga sudha...
She has travelled all over the globe performing. Infact she had performed in the North a lot ( she was in Delhi for a long time and learnt Hindustani too.) but today she is very happy if she dosent get 5 kutcheris in 5 days!! SVK and his daughter ( naada inbam) are great fans of periamma's music and thats why they make it a point to have her kutcheri every year.
She does have a major recognition in the music field. Any musician will know about this great singer. the mass may not know her
.but thats they way she wants it to be

Krithikas, Thanks for the clarification. Sorry, I did not mean to imply that she should sing 5 concerts in 5 days....
Today's music has become so segmented, and classified, as in "heavyweight", ""pristine", "tukkada"....
I wish we start to refrain from such "branding" atleast when it comes to relevent practitioners of the artform...
This can allow rasikas to have an open mind and realize the ocean that is carnatic music. Recently, I heard a concert of Smt Ravi's from Sangeethapriya, and the bhavam/manodharmam plus choice is very appealing, just to experience and absorb. Reading a list, or summing the number of alapanas become a moot point.

well i was just clarifying why she has a definite concert in music academy ( not this time because they have given a turn for other singers too) and in nada inbam.
its upto people to rise to this standard and get to know the true essence to the art. most musicians want to sing what the crowd wants. do they take an effort to make the people realise the depth?? they would end up not getting a chance to perform!!
it really gets to branding this generation of musicians because each one sings with one idea in their mind!!
i mean to say...rama ravi belongs to the pervious generation of musicians and she still sticks to the traditionalist attitude...
but some want crowd...some want lota kutcheris to their pocket...some want fame as soon as they come to the limelight..
u can see only dilution in such cases and ultimately being branded...

Mami is a fantastic teacher too. My daughter had the privilege of learning few kritis from mami this summer. I was fortunate to be there for a couple of her lessons. It was a wonderful experience listening
to great music being taught with such grace, poise and quiet dignity that emanate from within.
Vanaja.
